Android :: How To Use OnSensor Changed Sensor Data In Combination With OpenGL?
Nov 24, 2010
I have written a TestSuite to find out how to calculate the rotation angles from the data you get in SensorEventListener.onSensorChanged(). I really hope you can complete my solution to help people who will have the same problems like me. Here is the code, i think you will understand it after reading it. Feel free to change it, the main idea was to implement several methods to send the orientation angles to the opengl view or any other target which would need it. method 1 to 4 are working, they are directly sending the rotationMatrix to the OpenGl view. method 6 works now too, but i have no explanation why the rotation has to be done y x z.. all other methods are not working or buggy and i hope someone knows to get them working. i think the best method would be method 5 if it would work, because it would be the easiest to understand but i'm not sure how efficient it is. the complete code isn't optimized so i recommend to not use it as it is in your project. Code...

Am researching a problem with compass and sensor values returned by the phone. I found this thread: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa. Which seems related, but it's old so I'm starting a new one. I'm getting stuck values from both the compass and orientation sensors. It was fine yesterday, but today, I'm only getting values in a limited range (e.g. compass headings from 240 - 290), no matter how I orient the device. What's even more odd is that the radians returned from the call to Sensor Manager.get Orientation(), which returns radians, is giving consistently out of range values. Anyone see this same behavior, and if so, any fixes? Here's some sample sensor data. Format is heading, pitch, roll. The first set contains raw values, the second set contains values after I've applied the orientation matrix generated by the Sensor Manager. The third set contains values after I've smoothed the data with my own algorithm.

Just joined the Android group. I'm having problems with the acceleration and orientation sensors.I would like to obtain sensor data (acceleration and orientation values) at regular intervals (10 milliseconds). However, the SensorEventListener doesn't allow you to do that. Does anyone have an idea of how to work around this issue? This is important as I need it to collect data for an app I'm working on.

Per the current implementation in Sensor Manager, the SensorThread is polling data per below code, final int sensor = sensors_data_poll(values, status, timestamp); it then checks the sensor type if it is registered and processes the data further. For an application which has registered for only one sensor, still to get that particular sensor data, SensorThread has to execute for atleast N-1 loop most of the time. Can anybody provide the insight as to, why SensorThread is waiting to check the sensor type to be returned by the HAL instead of sending sensor information which is currently registered by that application. Wouldn't that increase the performance?

I am working on a project using HTC magic which requires the data from the electronic compass, including both the accelerometer and magnetic sensor. But I find that there is a significant latency between the move of the phone and the trigger of the sensorChanged event. In other word, the acceleration and magnetic data obtained from sensor are updated about half of a second after my motion. And I have several questions about the problem as follow. Are the orientation data computed by the acceleration and magnetic data? Or are there a physical sensor for orientation? Does the latency result from the android API (using the event) or the physical limitation of the electronic compass? It is said that the model of the electronic compass is AK8976A from Asahi Kasei. Does anybody have the datasheet or know the frequency of the sampling? Any idea to improve the real-time experience?

I would like to continuously send/stream sensor data (GPS, acceleration, etc.) from a device to a server. What would be the best technology to do this? Is it possible to use RTSP? What else would you recommend me to use?

I am developing an application that read data from sensors and write those data to an XML file when you press a key. i have 2 activity one for button and another is an Activity who implements sensorEventListener. the problem is my main activity is button and couldn't get data from event listener activity. i think the listener activity is not active but when i create an intent and start activity with that intent the program stop working. the button is able to create XML file solely.so how could i read sensor data from sensors, and how to send them to XML file when the button got clicks.

I'm using Android 2.1 on a HTC Nexus One. I want to collect sensor data while the device is turned off.
By using android.app.Service this works well while the app is in the background but stops working when the display is turned off by the hardware button.
Is there a possibility to collect sensor data while the display is turned off?

I have ListView with adapter class which extends ArrayAdapter and implements SectionIndexer. The problem is section indexer is not updated when adapter data is changed. Even if i add new elements the section remain the same. I tried some options setFaseScrollEnabled(false); setFaseScrollEnabled(true); but i got IndexOutOfBounds exception. So how can i update sectionIndexer when adapter's data is changed.

I have a list view that can display items based on internal state (it has items, and 'viewed' items). i need to be able to toggle between the two states, i do that using a simple button that change the adapter's state and the adapter then called notifyDatasetChanged(). My data DOES gets updated, however i was facing two problems:
if in the previous mode the list was partially scrolled, it stayed in that state after i changed the data set (if i was half the way down i'll be half way down in the new data set as well, this is not the behavior i want, but i cols not find a way to scroll the list manually to position 0. any ideas?
(setSelected is not exactly a solution since i DON'T want any selection i want to stay in touch mode) In my list View each item has an image that is fetched from the net, as so it's being brought using my networking manager and i send the image request ONLY if i'm in this screen for the first time OR if scroll state is idlle, i didn't want to start loading images from the getView method since if i fling the screen it may load a lot of unnecessary images. However when calling notifyDatasetChanged() the scroll listener methods are not called. i solved this one by using notifyDatasetInvalidated even though my data is not empty, is there a better way to solve this issue ?

Just watched Google IO's "World Of ListView" presentation [1]. Awesome stuff. I think every Android dev should watch it.
One gotcha for me was to use BaseAdapter.notifyDataSetChanged[2]. I checked code that I have written more than a year ago and found that I did try to use that, but commented it out with '// doesn't work' and I use requery() instead. That is of course much slower.
I now tried to find out why I wrote that it didn't work and hoped that I am meanwhile so much wiser that it would be easier to understand the proper use of the API. So much for ambition: The effect I see is that the list is not updated after I call notifyDataSetChanged(), but works with requery() and I am not so much wiser.
What could be the issue here? I use a ResourceCursorAdapter and only implemented the bindView() Method. This method is called when I call notifyDataSetChanged() on the RCAdapter. However the method is called with a cursor that contains the stale data.
Now there was a second gotcha from the presentation that I couldn't really place. It was said that the data should be committed on the GUI thread too (before calling notifyDataSetChanged()). I couldn't place it then, but I now suspect that this may be the issue here. So the rule would be to do the commit() on the Cursor on the UI thread? I do the updates to the database using a Service. This Service runs in the background, sometimes the app is in the foreground at the same time, but most often not. So I don't see how I should commit something in a UI thread? Is this the issue here? There are two different Cursors and I could only use notifyDataSetChanged when it would be the same cursor, otherwise requery() is correct?
Is that it? Any ideas? Is somebody going to write a book "The Android SDK - The missing manual"?

I'm trying to clean up some code and now I'm determined to get this seemless ListView updating working...
I want my ListView to be updated when I call notifyDataSetChanged() but nothing happens... I'm also passing the autoRequery flag to true when creating my CursorAdapter.
Cursor c = FavoritesHandler.getCategoryFavorites(getSQLiteInstance(), category); m_favoriteAdapter.changeCursor(c); startManagingCursor(c);

This is the code i have implemented for loading 16 bit data:
GLES30.glTexImage2D(GLES30.GL_TEXTURE_2D, 0,
GLES30.GL_RGB16I, ImageWidth, ImageHeight, 0,
GLES30.GL_RGB_INTEGER, GLES30.GL_SHORT, pixelBuffer);
I have succesfully created Image Texture using GL_UNSIGNED BYTE with 8 bit data. But failed when using GL_SHORT using 16 bit data.

I have a HTC Hero here, and when I tried to get the list of available sensors on the device by calling ((SensorManager) getSystemService (Context.SENSOR_SERVICE)) .getSensorList(Sensor.TYPE_ALL); I get only the following sensors: D/SensorManager( 6302): found sensor: BMA150 3-axis Accelerometer, handle=0 D/SensorManager( 6302): found sensor: AK8973 3-axis Magnetic field sensor, handle=1 D/SensorManager( 6302): found sensor: AK8973 Orientation sensor, handle=2 D/SensorManager( 6302): found sensor: AK8973 Temperature sensor, handle=3 According to the specs, there should be a light and a proximity sensor on the Hero, and I've seen it in action (the automatic screen brightness adjustment) - so at least the ambient light sensor is definitely there. My question is then, why doesn't the getSensorList return for me the light and the proximity sensors?

After months of being really happy with 1.5, I ran with OTA 2.1 for about a week.... hated it! While I didn't see any outright bugs, the phone had hugely sluggish response, very poor battery life, etc. Finally decided to to the Factory Data Reset this morning, and voila - lovin' my Eris again.
Things to note:
Before Factory Data reset w/ 2.1 OTA:
- Phone uptime and awake time were almost equal (not good)
- Had the 50% without signal message
- 'Android System' always listed as top user of battery usage (60-70%)
- Even while idle, phone always felt 'warm' (like it was continually running a background process, as evidence by poor battery life)
After Factory Data reset w/ 2.1 OTA:
- Phone uptime and awake time now as expected (awaketime < uptime)
- No more 50% signal message
- Cell Standby and Phone Idle now top users of batter usage.
- Phone now cool to the touch while idle
One thing to note is even after the reset, I still had issues syncing Gmail contacts, and needed to delete the contacts cache.
While I won't conjecture about root cause, I'm hoping Google and VZ learn from this experience, as much of this mucking about is *way* beyond what most 'normal' users would put up with. My wife loves her iPhone and just laughs at me dealing with all this c**p. Besides, I can't remember the last time *she* had to reboot her phone..

My home icon is way less responsive than the back icon which seems to be perfectly normal. Sometimes I have to "press" the home icon twice to get the "buzz" and have it move the screen. However the back icon works 99% of the time on the first press. IS there any adjustment I can make or should I bring the phone back. I have had it now for 2 weeks.

Single Threaded OpenGL game ! (check bottom, you can download and use the helper class) Lighting disabled ! Depth Buffer disabled ! Culling enabled ! Textures disabled !
Just 176 integers (x,y values only) making 88 vertexes along with 132 index numbers making "44 triangles only"
Framerates I get is
with GL_BLENDING disabled - 145 fps approx only! enabled - 110 fps approx only!
I have the screenshot of exact code in the draw function here.. just 2 damn lines ! I have hidden only the comments.. click here to see it http://prasna991.googlepages.com/drawframe.png
variable details in the 2 lines of code =========================== ipts = 176 elements (only x and y for each vertex) totallinetriangles * 3 = 176 lineindexes = 132 elements - type "short"
Here is the screenshot of output drawing and how it will look like http://prasna991.googlepages.com/screen.png
OpenGL single threaded Initialization Helper ================================ Here is my OpenGL helper class.. makes the OpenGL initialization for newbies a cakewalk http://prasna991.googlepages.com/OpenGLHelperclass.txt
I tested by rendering on the touch event only.. frame rate drops only when u touch and drag and here I have just tested by tapping and releasing gently on the emulator and on the device
Is this the device limitations ? So graphics is actually a lot lot lot slower than on iPhone ?

I would like to be able to use the OpenGL API from both Java and C (via NDK).
In Java, there is a GL object passed, which has all GL methods on it.
In C, you just talk to the native library.
In a single onDrawFrame callback (for which Java is passed a GL), can I use methods on the GL object, and also call NDK methods which access the openGL library?
In other words, is the GL object just a wrapper for the same instance of the native library?

I have finally - after days and days of agony - figured out that I need two forms of encryption for my Digital Signatures Project. The first will will be symmetric (AES) and will encrypt the license data and the second will be a asymmetric (RSA) an will encrypt the symmetric key. Can someone give me pointers on the best methods to use for Android.
For the public/private keys I am using: "RSA/ECB/PKCS1Padding"(I head ECB is bad so what should I use?, what about the PKCS1Padding - shoudl I be using PKCS5Padding?)
For the symetric keys I will probably use: "AES/?/?" (What mode and padding should I use?)
The provider: "BC"
RSA Keysize: 1024 (I tried 2048 but it didn't work for some reason)
AES Keysize: ?

I've got a database. In its "tags" column, rows can have a combination of multiple values "A, B, C"--such that: row 1 has "A" row 2 has "A, C" row 3 has "B, A" and so on, in various permutations. I am trying to implement search using a managedQuery such that I can return a cursor that contains rows with one or more values in the query. For example, if the user enters "C, A" for a search, s/he should get all rows that have A, C, or A and C. I'm splitting the user query on the comma (",") character, and the final call is as follows (parameters replaced by actual values):
mActivity.managedQuery("content_uri", [id, title, tags], "title LIKE ? OR tags LIKE ?", [%A% OR %C%, %A% OR %C%], "title ASC")
Even though there are rows in the database that contain A, C, or A and C--the managedQuery returns nothing. Thankfully, if the query is for "A", or for "C", the appropriate rows with "A" or "C" or "A and C" are returned. It's just that a query with more than one search term returns nothing. What am I doing wrong here? My guess is that %A% OR %C% is incorrect logic, but why?

we are confused with designing interface file for android,we have made user interface with Absolute layout and used "dip" instead of "px" (for different screen size issue) ,but it looks like,Absolute layout has been depreciated, and developer.android, recommends not to use Absolute layout
So other option we have is to use
1.Linear layout
2.Frame layout
3.Table Layout
But we are unable to bring Combination of above layouts so,that we can make button/widgets to proper position we need
How do we make widgets to desired position of screen with above said layouts and making them compatible with different screen sizes we have in android devices
would like to get a generic answer about same,
Tools used are: DrawDroid
