May 4, 2010For example, I have an activity that uses a utility class. I would like to be able to start an activity from the utility class and have the activity result sent back to the utility class.
The only way I could think of starting the activity was to pass the original activity to the utility class, so that the utility class could use the original activity to start the activity. The problem with this is that the activity is sent to the original activity, rather than the utility class.
I also thought of actually making the utility class an activity itself, but that would make using the utility class much more complicated.

Jan 26, 2009I have an application with contains multiple activities. The main activity will start the others ( use startActivity() ) depends on user event, when an activity close, it calls finish() and return back to main activity. It appears to behavior like that.
However, the "problem" I see is main activity's onCreate function is called every time. I think the the main activity should be placed in the activity stack and simply push to front when others exit, therefore only onResume, onStart are called. Is there some flag I need to set or I misunderstand the activity behaviro?
In child activity, besides calling finish() or startActivity for main activity, what is other way to move main activity to front?

Jan 10, 2010I created an application which enables the user to set whether he wants to receive notification while the application runs in background mode. If the notifications are enabled an activity should be started (the dialog should appear on the screen).
I tried to enabled it the following way:

This is the method from main activity. When onPause() is executed isRunningInBackground is set true.
When I tried to debug it when the main application was running in the background the line
startActivity(intent) had no effect (the activity didn't appear).
Does anyone know how to midify the logic in order to start an activity from the main activity when the main activity is running in the background (after onPause() is called)?

Apr 20, 2010I have tried to write an Android application with an activity that should be launched from a different application. It is not a content provider, just an app with a gui that should not be listed among the installed applications. I have tried the code examples here and it seems to be quite easy to launch existing providers and so on, but I fail to figure out how to just write a "hidden" app and launch it from a different one.
The basic use case is:
App A is a normal apk launchable from the application list.
App B is a different apk with known package and activity names, but is is not visible or launchable from the application list.
App A launches app B using the package and class names (or perhaps a URI constructed from these?).
I fail in the third step. Is it possible to do this?

Apr 22, 2010I have a huge maze of activities in my application. What I need to do, is that when the user logs in into the system, the activity history should be cleared. I cant just use finish() when I start a new activity, because I want the activities to have a history until the user logs in. I have experimentet with the different flags when starting an activity, but I have had no success.

Jul 14, 2010I'm just getting into Android development, and I have a question about communicating between a receiver class and an activity class. I'm very new to JAVA and Android so I hope I don't sound too stupid. I'm developing an application where I intercept an SMS message and then based on various elements of that SMS I might delete it once it's been saved to the inbox. I have a receiver class that intercepts the txt message, and I am also able to delete messages from my inbox with code in the activity class using a button at the moment. The problem I have is communicating between the receiver class and the activity class where the code to delete a message resides. I tried putting that code directly into the receiver class but as I'm sure most of you already know the BroadcastReceiver class doesn't seem to support what I need to delete messages. I've been searching for an answer to this for a while, but haven't been able to find anything. Honestly I'm not sure I know enough about JAVA and Android to even recognize a solution if I saw it.

Jul 28, 2010I've got two activities, one of them is called MyActivity. I want both of them to be able to use a function located in a class othat we may call MyClass. In MyClass, I try to use an intent to launch the activity AnotherActivity. Since the constructor takes a context as parameter, I simply tried to store a context from the activity in the constructor, and then use it when I try to create my intent.However, even thought none of the arguments are null (checked that with a simple if-statement), intent seems to be null and a NullPointerException is thrown. Why does it not work, and what can I do to solve the problem?
I'm quite new to Android and Java development, so please explain it as basic as you can.

The detection of swipes works, but I now want to start another activity (or draw a bitmap on the currently displayed activity), but I seemingly can't use startActivity(mContext, myIntent), because the class declaration is public final class GridInputProcessor implements GestureDetector.OnGestureListener, GestureDetector.OnDoubleTapListener {so it doesn't extend Activity...
Can I still start an Activity through this class, or how would I go about doing this? I have also tried sending a broadcast, but this is also not "implemented".
