I'm starting a service with an intent where I put extra information. How can I get the intent in the code of my service? There isn't a function like getIntent().getExtras() in service like in activity.

I'm creating an app for posting pictures to a particular proprietary social site. I have it working with the camera and the IMAGE_CAPTURE intent. I want to add the ability to do this from pictures in the Gallery. I seem to have everything wired up, but I'm scratching my head how to get the image from the intent when my activity is lauched from the Gallery's share menu. In onCreate, the code getIntent().getDataType() returns "image/jpeg", as expected, but how to I get the picture from the Gallery into my ImageView?
The code at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2206397/android-intent-action-send... suggests how the Gallery app is adding the picture by means of emailIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, Uri.fromFile(png)); but on my end, it's not clear to me at all how to get that Uri from the intent.
Do any one know how to broadcast any intent if new email is received?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm launching an IntentService using startActivity from inside the onClickListener of a button. startActivity returns immediately. No blocking there. But the button stays "pressed" until the IntentService finishes its work. In addition, the screen does not respond to rotation while the IntentService thread is running. I can see that it's a separate thread in the debugger but the UI seems to be coupled to it. As soon as the IntentService thread finishes, the UI is unblocked. Any idea how I can prevent this and let the UI continue?

So I turned on profiling in the onStartCommand method of the IntentService and turned it off at the end of the onStartMethod. The working being done in between is web access with the Apache HTTP client.According to the profiler, the onStartCommand method of the IntentService is running on the main thread, not in a worker thread. Any idea what could cause this behavior?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm posting this to share the lessons I learned while working with IntentService. IntentService has a single constructor that takes a string argument "name". The documentation has no description of what name is used for. In looking at the sources, I found that its only use is in naming the worker thread for the IntentService. This thread is named IntentService [name].
I initially implemented the constructor of the derived class to also take a String argument and passed it along to the derived class. This is wrong. This will cause the startService() call to generated a java.lang.InstantiationException in the application containing the service i.e. you don't get the exception in the application calling startService(). A clue to the actual problem is a little further up in the logs:"newInstance failed: no <init>()"
The derived class must have a Default constructor and that constructor must call super() passing a string for the name component of the worker thread name.

I have created the Client-Server application. At the Server site i have used the AIDL to impliment the interfaces in my Service class. At Client site i have exposed the AIDL interfaces and have one Activity that mainly do the IPC mechanism , i mean ServiceConnection, bindService and then call the Serivce of the Client site. But i am getting the error i mentioned during the bindService call.
Could you please let me know the steps mainly i have to follow to run the Client -Server Application. For time being i am running the Client .apk first and then the Server .apk, but the server one giving me error.
It would be great if you could let me know what all permission short of thing to take care, as my Client and Server code are placed at different APks, so do i need to import the Client project in my Server Project, if yes then how to impliment that.
I have a service running in the background.I have a background thread that gets a reference to the service from the application's main activity. But when the background thread calls a method in the service to display a toast, I get the "Looper not initialized exception".Why,if I have a valid, bound reference to a Service, does this still happen?

android.os.Debug.waitForDebugger();

I have put a couple of breakpoints, at the statements indicated by the comments.
This is what happens: the debugger first stops at the breakpoint1, for a few seconds. But then the service restarts. For the life of me I can't figure out what makes the service to restart.
My service works exactly the way i want as long as i use start and stop and communicate using intents. However my activity needs to change the state of my service as well as retrieving state information.So i thought it would be nice to broadcast some kind of state_changed event from my service and use a binder interface to pull information from the service or change the services state based on user input.This works fine too. The only problem is that my service gets killed when i unbind it just as the documentation says.Is there any way to keep the service alive but still get an interface to control it directly. My activity offers the user a way to stop the service and the service kills itself anyway after it's work is done but i don't want the service to stop every time the activity is destroyed.

I am developing an Android app which needs to poll a specific webpage in time intervals. I've got it to the point where it does indeed poll the page on a specific interval, and that interval is specified in a SharedPreference which can be changed by the user in the settings page of the app. But complications arise when network connectivity is flaky.For example, how do I ensure that the Service "wakes up" the network adapter and gives it ample time to connect before polling the page, in the case that the phone was sleeping to save power? This polling action can happen as little as once every 24 hours, so I don't want to miss one action just because the network was out (but turned on a few seconds, minutes, or even hours later).
Or there are times when the web service doesn't respond, or DNS doesn't respond, or what have you, and for any reason it doesn't get a response even though the phone is technically connected. What sort of rule do I put in place to make this retry later, so that I'm not retrying repeatedly when the user specifically turned off their internet but I'm retrying soon enough that if it was just a hiccup, the data can be received soon after the first try?Are there any examples for this type of situation? What is the logic to best handle this?
