Android :: Not Allowed To Start Service Intent In Permissions

Aug 8, 2009

Having trouble with permissions. The error I get is this: Not allowed to start service Intent { comp= {com.commonsware.android.service/ com.commonsware.android.service.WeatherPlusService} } without permission private to package I installed the WeatherPlus app from Mark Murphy's dev book. I'm trying to call his weather service from a different app. I think I have an issue with permissions, not really sure how they work. I thought that you could just make your own, and then check against it. With that in mind, listed below is the client manifest, followed by the service manifest. I called my permission "mypermission". Code...

Android : Unable To Start Service Intent Error In Client-Server Project / Fix It?

Feb 12, 2009

I am getting the below error when ever i am trying to call the bind service. 02-12 20:17:25.486: WARN/ActivityManager(58): Unable to start service Intent { action=oem.android.proj2.IRemoteService }: not found

I have created the Client-Server application. At the Server site i have used the AIDL to impliment the interfaces in my Service class. At Client site i have exposed the AIDL interfaces and have one Activity that mainly do the IPC mechanism , i mean ServiceConnection, bindService and then call the Serivce of the Client site. But i am getting the error i mentioned during the bindService call.

Could you please let me know the steps mainly i have to follow to run the Client -Server Application. For time being i am running the Client .apk first and then the Server .apk, but the server one giving me error.

It would be great if you could let me know what all permission short of thing to take care, as my Client and Server code are placed at different APks, so do i need to import the Client project in my Server Project, if yes then how to impliment that.

Android :: Start An Activity From A Non-context Class?

May 4, 2010

For example, I have an activity that uses a utility class. I would like to be able to start an activity from the utility class and have the activity result sent back to the utility class.

The only way I could think of starting the activity was to pass the original activity to the utility class, so that the utility class could use the original activity to start the activity. The problem with this is that the activity is sent to the original activity, rather than the utility class.

I also thought of actually making the utility class an activity itself, but that would make using the utility class much more complicated.

Android :: What Is The Significance Of Context In Various Constructor Of Intent Class When Starting An Activity

Mar 4, 2010

I had come across a code snippet which calls for an activity without referring to any context. Before, i was considering that context is used to tell about the calling component. But as i came see that another component can be called without any reference to context, it makes me wonder what purpose it might be serving. please put some light on it.

Here is the code which calls for an activity without referring to 'context'

Android :: Get Calling Context In Service

Aug 30, 2010

So I'm working on a service that will handle requests to send data to a socket.I've done socket programming in a service before, but only within the same application. I'd like this to just sit and do nothing until any application wants to give it data to send. That's all well and good.I have register an intent filter and the usual stuff and can process the data. But I want to process the data coming from different activities in different threads (subsequent calls from the same application will be computed on the same thread). Is there a way to get the calling package or app or whatever? I'd prefer not to require passing in an identifier as an extra to prevent spoofing. (It's not a serious security concern, it's just each application needs its data processed in the order that it's received.)

Android :: Difference Between Service And Content Provider

Aug 19, 2010

I am developing an app and get confused about the idea of Service and Content Provider in Android. In practice, what will be the difference between them? Content Provider is a facade and it defines a way to share data among applications. You many attach a local database to your app or create Content Provider mapped to a universal database so that all the application on the same device can share it. Service is long running processes that need to be decoupled from main activity. It has local and remote service. local service is like the local database, and remote service is like Content Provider sharing the database info.

What My App is doing? downloads info. from multiple internet resource in the background (I suppose this will be Service) and store the info. into database, and multiple applications will need to retrieve the data, format them and output them to user (I guess it will be a Content Provider). What will be the fine line between Service and Content Provider? Newbie in Android

Android :: Start An Intent To Launch An App To Background In Droid

May 16, 2010

I'm using Wikitude API 1.1 as an AR viewer in my application. The problem with Wikitude, if I haven't launched the actual Wikitude application since the phone's bootup, I will get a NullPointerException everytime I start my own application.

So I figure if I can start my app first and them check if Wikitude is installed and or running. If it's not installed, go to market n download. If it's not running, then we should run it straight to background so that my app doesn't loose its focuscode...

The part I block commented is the intent to start Wikitude. But I always failed in restricting Wikitude to background. Any help?

Sep 14, 2010

I'm launching an IntentService using startActivity from inside the onClickListener of a button. startActivity returns immediately. No blocking there. But the button stays "pressed" until the IntentService finishes its work. In addition, the screen does not respond to rotation while the IntentService thread is running. I can see that it's a separate thread in the debugger but the UI seems to be coupled to it. As soon as the IntentService thread finishes, the UI is unblocked. Any idea how I can prevent this and let the UI continue?
