Android :: Get Droid Browser To Interpret Sprites Better?
Oct 19, 2010
I'm developing a mobile web application and I have a home screen with a number of icons on it, so I tried to use a sprite to serve all the images in one swoop.
I noticed, however, that the iphone4 scaled the images in my sprite fairly well (they looked a little dithered), but on my HTC Evo the sprite rendered images look really blocky. I switched to standard images (background:(/image_url/) w/o background-position) and the image looked much better - see this , where the left image is served using the single image, and the ones to the right of it are served from the sprite (but are the same images in the sprite).
Is there a way to get the Android browser to interpret the sprites better?

In the 2.1 Eris:
In Settings -> Applications -> Running Services
There is a white bar at the bottom. Mine says:
Avail: 10MB + 0.00B in 5 Other:0.00B in 6
(Those numbers have been different, obviously at different times. The above numbers are after killing the still-running Music, Listen, and AK Notebook processes. No other "non-essential" proceses were running. )
But what do they mean?
How does that correlate to Settings -> SD card & phone storage which tells me Available space is 86 MB?

I am having trouble finding information related to which i should choose, OpenGL ES 1.1 or 2.0 for 2D graphics.
OpenGL ES 1.1 on Android is a bit limited to my knowledge, and based purely on sprite count the only useful renderer is draw_texture() (as far as i know). However, that does not have rotation and rotation is very important to me.
Now with the NDK adding support for OpenGL ES 2.0, i am trying to figure out if there is anything that preforms as well as draw_texture(), but can handle rotation.
Anyone have any information on if 2.0?

I have installed Dolphin and like it, and I've made it my default browser, which is great. However, it is not only the system default, but it even opens links I click on in the Android provided browser (sometimes I both open). On your computer, when you click links in your non-default browser it doesn't send the links to the default one, and it shouldn't on this OS, either. Any ideas how to keep Dolphin as my system default browser, but not have it open links I click on in the Android web browser?

I just wanted to test how to move on a touchscreen the slider of a scroll bar, but big surprise, there is no scroll bar. I have defined a DIV with overflow:auto This means when the content of the DIV is greater than the DIV defined with style width and height, there should be scroll bars added to the DIV. But at this test page the left menu is larger than the DIV, but no scroll bar is added to the DIV. When you test it with an Android cell phone, You will have first scroll the screen to the left.

Did anybody found out (if it is even possible) how to scroll iframe in Android's browser?
For those that do not know what iFrame it is basically a frame inside a normal HTML document - please check this for the example - http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/frames/_IFRAME_SCROLLING.html
On the iPhone you scroll iframe inside the page by putting 2 fingers on the frame (instead of usual one for scrolling).
I have some web pages that use iframe and it is very frustrating not to be able to use them on my phone.

I'd like to be able prompt my app to open link (instead of the browser) when the user clicks on a URL of a given pattern. This could be when the user is on a web page in the browser, or in an email client, or a WebView in a freshly minted app.
For example, click on a YouTube link from anywhere in the phone and you'll be given the chance to open the YouTube app.
How do I achieve this for my own app.

Like the title says, I am thinking about developing my own browser for Android devices.
My first thought is to know what kind of possibilities I have, before I begin creating my software architecture. Are there any (open?) Browser Engines you could include into your library and reuse them?
(There are some unknown browsers in the Android Market and I can't imagine they implemented the parsing).
Furthermore: If there IS something like I've described before, is it possible to modify (or "fine tune") the render methods? This is one of the most interesting points I guess.
And to end this question and catch the else-case: What would be the alternative way to begin?
[I guess this is not only interesting to know for mobile developers, also for desktop software developers]
Abbreviated version of this question: I want to develop my own Android Browser. How to begin?

On the iPhone, safari strips out scrollbars on divs that have overflow set to auto or scroll, but still lets the user scroll with the two-finger swipe gesture.
Using an HTC Incredible, we see the scrollbars are again missing, but we cannot figure out any gesture that allows the user to scroll. Is there a special directive we need to add to our HTML? This should affect zillions of websites, any time someone is trying to scroll an area of the page rather than the whole page. Does anyone know how to enable scrolling a div using the web browser on Android phones?
