Android :: Emulator's Camera Built-in App Buggy In Froyo / 2.2
Jun 1, 2010
The Emulator's camera worked fine for taking pictures in 2.1 Eclair. What did not work was recording videos, obviously.
Now running an app which worked merely flawless on 2.1 Emulator causes the camera app to crash. I fire up an intent to launch it:
CODE:...................
This starts the camera app but after a few seconds it crashes.
The output is:
CODE:.................
Actually I just wanted to see if the bug which made you receive a small image from the camera even though EXTRA_OUTPUT was specified has been fixed in FroYo. Unfortunately, I don't even get to test it.

We are exploring the default applications in Froyo and we found out that the Camera app always crashes seconds after it loads.
Is this related to the no camera/video input limitation of the application? If not, what seems to be the problem? We already added all the additional properties to the AVD. We also disabled the auto-rotate screen option.

Has anyone else noticed that after updating to Froyo, that text wrapping/redrawing is not working properly while web-browsing?For example, if you go to a text heavy website, like Reddit, and I zoom in (either by double-tap or pinch), the text will redraw, but it will be slightly larger than the screen's width. To read the text, I am required to scroll a bit to the right, then back to the left, and so on.I never had this problem prior to the Froyo update. Can anyone else confirm that they are having this problem? before I get bombed on, I should say that I am very happy with Froyo in other regards. I have not had any battery drain issues or any lag anywhere. I did not do a factory reset.

I've been viewing this forum for months and I'm surprised that I haven't joined until now lol... I'm currently a tmobile customer and will be getting the X in November. I've read in a few places and from a few people in person that the 2.2 froyo update was a tad buggy in small ways after the update. My question here is... Are any of you who recently bought a droid x PRELOADED with 2.2 have any problems too? Are is it primarily those who came from 2.1? I am honestly hoping to find a droid x with 2.1 so I can hold out on the update until the kinks are fixed but I was just curious if there was a difference for those who updated and those who got there's preloaded.

my Dell Latitude E6400 has a built-in gps receiver. How can I hook it up with the emulator? I have enough problems spoofing gps data due to exisiting Android bugs, so I might as well use real ones?

I'm trying to build my own Froyo images for Nexus one using the source code downloaded from android.git.kernel.org. The platform code is the master branch and the kernel code branch is android-msm-2.6.32. I built the images successfully. However, when I flashed my Nexus one with the images, the system hang at the colorful X screen. My Nexus one's specification and the steps I used to build the images are below. Could you please tell me whether I missed anything during the process? Is there any tool that I can use to hook up with the phone when the phone boots so that I know which part goes wrong?
My nexus one specification: HBOOT-0.33.0012 MICROP_0b15 TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0103 RADIO-4.06.00.12.7
I built the system image and kernel image following the steps below.
1. For platform, at the root for the platform source code: a) . build/envsetup.h b) lunch 4 c) cd device/htc/passion ./extract-files.sh d) make
2. For kernel, at the root for kernel: a) export ARCH=arm b) export CROSS_COMPILE=arm-eabi- c) make msm_defconfig d) make
3. Build platform against kernel, at the root for platform source: a) Copy kernell/arch/arm/boot/zImage to out/target/product/passion/ kernel c) make

I am developing an app which uses the phone's default camera application to capture an image and then allow the user to perform some basic editing.I want the image captured to be saved in a location that is consistent with the stock camera application. Can I use the DCIM folder and assume all phones will use that location?

Can it be done? Obviously Verizon and Motorola have disabled it because they want us to pay $20/month for the Verizon app. Yeah, sure Verizon. Anyways, if it requires a custom ROM to enable, then we're SOL until someone breaks the bootloader encryption or we have to use the free WiFi Tether for Root Users app which only supports Ad-hoc mode and WEP encryption, which basically is the same as no encryption really.

I have done many of reverse engineering for other electronics in the past, Since Im new to android I was wondering before even wasting my time if is possible to port, or built a rom from sources or a phone thatis NOT External SD built in to a phone that it have the external sd built in.
Making it short can I try to reverse engineer the android code from a Nexus 5 (no ext_sd) to other device that have ext_sd built in?
If is possible where should I be looking to start trying making some development on this as I haven't done nothing close quite.

I might have missed something, but how do we get flash working on the new 2.2 emulator? The sites I've tried don't work (eg BBC), and when trying to go to flash install site, i get rerouted to a market url for com.adobe.flashplayer (which obviously won't work on an emulator). So is flash being delivered as a market app? And if so how do we get it on an emulator.

I find that the stock Android IM app struggles to maintain a connection for all of my IM accounts. This is especially true when I'm at home and on a combination of Wi-Fi and 3G. The odd thing is that it won't directly say that I'm offline, but rather show that all of my contacts are offline. This happens with all of the accounts I use (AIM, Google Talk, MSN). Sometimes I can even chat to the people that appear offline! Signing in and signing out does not always work, nor does turning off Wi-Fi. Sometimes I even have to resort to restarting the phone.

I've just noticed that launching the Camera and Camcorder (in the emulator) would result in a black screen (instead of the famous moving small boxes), i've looked for why this happening on the net, apparently that the camera is disabled by default when you create an AVD. Decided to create another AVD with the camera enabled and launched it and still getting that black screen. Anyone has any idea how to fix this ?
My problem in the first place is that my application is using the default camera application using intents just like in the following: Intent imageCaptureIntent = new Intent (MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE); imageCaptureIntent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT, Uri.fromFile(new File("/sdcard/imageCaptureIntent.jpg"))); startActivityForResult(imageCaptureIntent, WHATEVER_REQ_CODE); I thought that there's a problem in my intent request but like i said before, running the camera on the emulator itself is the problem. By the way, You can run the "camera preview" in the API demos with no problems, how come!

I wish to simulate camera in the android emulator using the webcam. Basically I need to only take photos with the camera in the emulator (live preview is not needed i.e if it makes it any easier) I followed the tutorial here which is the only one I could find that was close to my requirements But many of the libraries used in that tutorial(like android.hardware.CameraDevice) are not available in present sdk and are replaced by new libraries(like android.hardware.camera). Any help on how to do this in the present sdk(2.1 or 2.2) would be much appreciated.

I was trying to use some of the new camera methods included in Froyo, i.e. setPreviewCallbackWithBuffer() & addCallbackBuffer(). In the documentation it's said you need first to create a buffer of appropriated size and use the addCallbackBuffer() method. The buffer size must be width * height * bits_per_pixel or otherwise you'll never receive a preview frame. To know the image size, you can ask to the camera about it's configuration. When I'm trying to configured the camera I use Camera.getParameters().getPreviewSize() the emulator says the size is 320*240, but with that size it didn't work on emulator. I used the old setPreviewCallback() and, in the onPreviewFrame(), I asked the size again. That time the size was 480*320. Then I hard- coded that values in the first code and everything worked. Now I'm afraid not only the emulator would have that behavior. Unfortunately I don't have any real device with Froyo and I can't try it. So, anyone have tried that methods in real devices? btw, are they really increasing the poor performance and frame rate?

It seems that Android is very buggy compared not only to the iPhone, but to pretty much any other software. It's not just minor bugs either - pretty much every developer will come across many serious bugs. Some examples:
- When you run the "sdk setup.exe", the very first thing that happens is that it informs you that it can't connect using https, so you have to change the options to use 'http' instead. This appears to be a bug in the .exe rather than any kind of user issue because the https url works fine in the browser and this error seems to affect everyone. Sure, it's trivial to work around (just do a google search and you figure it out in 5 seconds), but the user shouldn't have to do that. It makes it look unprofessional.
- When you view a TabWidget in the layout editor it crashes.
- Every time you run an app in the emulator, it starts off with the screen locked so you need to press the Menu key.
- Various socket bugs (or perhaps all the same bug) related to IOException not happening. Even something as simple as just trying to connect to a remote host that is not listening will cause it to hang instead of immediately returning an error.
All of these bugs have been logged for months (some by me, some by other people) with no indication of any fix.
At the moment I'm just using the emulator, but I'm wondering if the phones themselves are this buggy or if all the bugs are just in the development environment and emulator.

I have 1.0 r2 and it takes garbage pictures, and crashes when trying to view any saved image (I've only saved images taken from the emulator's "camera" so I don't know if it shows images that were pushed via adb properly.)
I'll try the 1.1 SDK, and failing that, an earlier version.
Is this a known issue, sort of a "well, if you're really going to work with pictures, you should be using a G1 anyhow..." kind of thing?

As far as i know, Android emulator doesn't have a camera. To capture a live image we have to use the web camera. I have seen code in this web site to use the web camera in the android emulator to capture an image, but I don't know how to use this code.

I'm using the android SDK in Eclipse on Linux. I've used the code at itp.nyu.edu/~sve204/mobilemedia_spring10/androidCamera101.pdf to write an app to store an image captured through the camera onto SD card (there are various examples of this around). It works ok except that the image returned by the camera is not what's on the preview surface. Instead of getting the checkerboard image I expect, I get different versions of the android icon depending on which version of target I choose. If I render the image to an ImageView this is confirmed as it's the same as on the SD card.

Camera application process dies and restarts again when device is Locked/End Call Key is clicked. Steps to reproduce: 1) Launch Camera application. 2) Click on End Call key(it acts as lock screen when there is no active call) or wait till device is locked. 3) Camera application is paused and surfaceDestroyed callback is not being called. 4) Camera process has died and restarted again. I would like to know why Camera process has died after onPause is being called and restarted again when device is put to Lock state. For all key events like BackKey,HomeKey and Accept Key it is working fine.

I have suffered the shutdown while charging and have traced it to a battery charge indicator app. I would charge the battery at night and the next morning it wouldn't restart without pulling the battery. This occurred concurrently with installing a battery charge indicator app. I uninstalled the app and now the problem has disappeared. My unabated installation of apps has now stopped. I am now convinced that the app world is full of bugs and crap. I bet half the problems that folks have are due to unvetted apps being used. I am now trying to figure out how to properly screen them before I install them and inherit a fatal bug in the process.

I've had my phone unplugged since 11AM this morning. It's now 8PM. My battery meter shows 1h 30m since unplugged (I think this is the built-in status from the OS). Additionally my battery widget shows 26% but the blue batter in the top corner shows 1/2 full. Are there any good battery meters out there that I can trust? Is anyone else noticing wild inconsistencies in time's and battery meters?
