Android :: Eclipse Droid Design View Of Res , Values / Strings.xml Not Working Anymore - Fix It?
Sep 8, 2010
This was working fine when I first started the project. I am referring to editing/adding to the strings.xml file. It used to display a design and XML tab that allowed me to update it. now its just showing up as a table. Any ideas? I don't understand how I could have messed this up. I did check in another project of mine and I am getting the same results so I don't think it has anything to do with the XML.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Logcat in eclipse has been working fine for me until bout a week ago. I'm not sure how I managed to do it to both my of development environments. (PC and Mac). I get the follow error when I open up logcat in eclipse.

I want to have some static numeric and text values as an application resource. For example my data is like this:
Levels 5 First_Level 500 60 1 Second_Level 500 80 1 Third_Level 200 60 1 Fourth_Level 130 30 2 Final_Level 100 30 3... and another 300 lines...
The format and order of the data is predefined and guaranteed to be valid.
I could read it with java.util.Scanner, but it's extremely slow in Android, reading a 10 KB file takes minutes. It's slow because of the regular-expression-based pattern matching inside (when I traceview'ed it).

When I make a new android project and I go to res/values/string.xml I get a screen to add android resources instead of a XML document. I keeps getting the error about : java.lang.NullPointerException.
Is there a way to just alter a XML file (like suggested in tutorials)?

A few weeks ago, I followed a tutorial to get Eclipse and the Android Development Kit up and running. I successfully built the test application and ran it on a virtual device.
Tonight I finally went back to do the next step in the tutorial, but when I went to start a new project there wasn't an option to start a new Android project. Even searching for it didn't produce anything. Window -> Preferences doesn't have an Android preferences dialog, either. The developer tools are still installed, though, according to Help -> Install New Software.
I'm using Eclipse Galileo 3.5.2 on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. I just recently upgraded. I remember I had to install some additional packages to get Eclipse to run the Android stuff last time. I haven't uninstalled those, so I don't know what's causing the problem.
What's causing this problem, and what can I do to fix it?

I find it a waste of time that every time I need to enter a string that I have to go edit the strings.xml file manually. What I'd like to be able to do ideally is have Eclipse pop up a dialog box that lets me specify the name of the resource and the value for it. Then Eclipse would generate the code in strings.xml and paste the correct reference to the string at the cursor position.

I use Eclipse Luna. I had the problem that it hanged on start. So I started it with eclipse -clean. Now it's alright except for workspace settings.
I want Eclipse to automatically start with a particular workspace like it was before the eclipse -clean start.
Now Eclipse starts without opening the saved workspace. But the workspace is saved somewhere because I can choose it at File->Switch Workspace->D:workspaceEclipse.
When I choose it Eclipse is restarting and opening D:workspaceEclipse automatically. But the workspace directory is only saved for one start.
When I exit Eclipse (File->Exit) and make a new start it is again starting with empty workspace and I have again to choose File->Switch Workspace->D:workspaceEclipse.But I want to open the workspace D:workspaceEclipse automatically for ever like it was before the Eclipse start with -clean parameter.

I am developing on Windows machine.I was working quite well until yesterday, when I saw the the update prompt and updated my ADT plugin. Today when I tried debugging my test project, I experienced either one the following cases:
1) Logcat stops forever on the message "sending wait chunk".
2) Logcat shows the following message, and test project fails:
3) Eclipse stops responding.
The above cases happens even when the test unit contains nothing. Also it just doesn't not work in debug. The test case runs successfully if it is not in debug mode (But there are still some glitches, like Logcat sometimes won't emit debug messages).

Having a problem in Eclipse with regards to an XML file. Eclipse complains that android:scrollbars and android:fadingEdge do not allow Strings. I checked the Android developer site and they do in fact accept strings in the xml file. A related question posed had the problem where there was a missing :android after xmlns. As you can see from the code the line beginning with xmlns is correct I believe. Here is the complete file contents:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<com.example.todolist.TodoListItemView
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:padding="10dp"
android:scrollbars="verticle"
android:textColor="@color/notepad_text"
android:fadingEdge="verticle"

Dear all, I'm making a simple file decoder for Android 2.2 that needs to find the filename of the encoded file from a header. This filename should then be used as the filename for the decoded file (as you would expect). The filename is identified by the substring name=, so the actual name starts 5 places after that. The line is read by a BufferedReader and temporarily stored in currLine. For some reason I can't understand nor find on the web, Strings do not always seem to be Strings.Gives no output file, nor an IO exception. The string is parsed properly though: from the System.out debugging lines.

I've got a map of about 500 entries. Strings are all very short (less than 5 chars). Its read-only data I want to read once at app-startup. What's the best way to store this so that loading this data is fast?I've tried storing the data in a CSV in res/raw but this takes about 700ms to parse on my N1, so I'm hoping there's a faster way.

Edit I send those values through the emulator controls in the ddms view in eclipse. If I send data via telnet I get the correct data shown and the onLocationChanged method of my listener is changed.

Should I create a Listener within a BaseAdapter or should I pass it in? I have 4 classes that inherit from a base class. I pass the Adapter a list objects.
The Adapter is eventually used with a ListActivity I want to create a View based on the derived class and I want them to launch an Activity based on the type of a View. Currently I create the intent and Listener in the BaseAdapter. Is what I'm doing a good pratice?

Edit: Okay, I found a solution. Don't know that it's the proper solution, but it does work correctly. Added to the code below. I'm trying to allow a user to select a number of directories from a checklist, and return them upon clicking a "Submit" button. Here's a snippet of my code. It populates the List View with all the directories on /sd card/, and for the initial selection (of however many I pick) when I submit, the log shows the correct choices returned. However, if I un check an item, and click "Submit" again, it still shows as if all are selected. Do I need to write a handler to un check an item? I thought that was taken care of by the choice Mode selection?

Yesterday I was trying to showoff the features of our phone to a friend and decided to demo the listen to command, but it didn't launch a song it just did a google search.
I have my langauge set to English (US). I cleared the Google Search application data.
Other voice actions work, likes "send text", "navigate to", "call", pizza, "how old is Barak Obama". For some reason "Listen to" just does a google search. SGH-I317M
