Android :: Domain Name Won't Resolve To An IP Address

Sep 27, 2010

I am working on a program that will connect to a time server (time- a.nist.gov), retrieve the timestamp, and place it in a text field.

However, when I create the socket, I get an UnknownHost Exception for time-a.nist.gov

1. put the <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" /> tag right before the </ manifest> tag. I did this, and the change is still there.

2. use the static InetAddress.getByName() function to convert to an IP address (this still throws the same exception)

When I pass the IP address (129.6.15.28) to the socket constructor, the program works fine. It only breaks when I use the actual domain name.

I have written this program in Java and it works perfectly fine.

General :: Android Emulator - Edit Hosts File Doesn't Resolve Custom Domain Name

Dec 20, 2010

I'm developing a mobile website and I want to see how it looks in Android Simulator.

I manage to edit my android's /etc/hosts file. Here's what I did:

1. Create an Android Virtual Device (AVD)
2. Open the AVD with this command

Code:
./emulator -avd android -partition-size 128

3. Execute the following commands

Code:
./adb remount

4. Get the android hosts file

Code:
./adb pull /etc/hosts

5. Add my mobile website into the android's hosts file. It looks like the following

Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost
172.19.14.46 m.myweb.localhost

6. Push the hosts file to the simulator

Code:
./adb push hosts /etc/hosts

7. Open the web mobile in the simulator and Host do not found. The web mobile should appear.

Btw I use Ubuntu 10.10 and android-sdk_r08-linux_86 API 7 (Android SDK 2.1)

Android :: Resolve Mail Address To Contacts Name

Jun 22, 2010

Assuming I have a contact saved in my addressbook, called "TomTasche" with the mail-address "stackoverflow@gmail.com". How can I retrieve the contact's name, if I only know the mail-address?

I already asked a similar questions about retrieving contact's nickname here, but if I change that code to query the mail, like that:

CODE:...........

It forces close and logcat tells me that there's a syntax error near @gmail.

CODE:..................

Interesting is that it seems to query fine. Logcat prints out the contact's name:

CODE:.............

How am I able to retrieve the name?

Syntax Error is caused by missing quotes, but cursor returns null anyway.

Android :: Ajax Cross Domain Requests

Nov 7, 2010

The behavior of XMLHttpRequests in Android is very odd when doing cross domain requests. The browser should either fail with an error and not perform the request, or it should follow CORS (http:// www.w3.org/TR/access-control/) and start with an OPTIONS request to the remote domain. The Android browser (2.1 and 2.2) instead performs the request, which is received by the remote server (and this is the dangerous part both for data leaking and remote attacks), but the response is not set in the javascript (status of 0 and responseText null)

Android :: Copy - Paste Code Snippet Into My Public Domain App?

Sep 8, 2010

I find this code useful and want to copy-paste it into my application which is licensed as public domain.

It is the Android blog, they often show useful code snippets. There is no way to contact the author, and the only license info I can see is "©2008 Google Inc. All rights reserved."

Should I:

Stop worrying and just copy-paste?
Reimplement it myself without looking?
Copy-paste and then make it look different?
Any better solution? ...

Is there a rule like "if shorter than 50 lines then no copyright applies" or something?

General :: Correct Address Format In Address Book And GPS

Jan 23, 2013

I like to add addresses to my phone book in Android. As a lot of my contacts live in buildings i also like to add the floor and apartment number to the address: Looking like that:

Street and Number, Floor and Department number
Town, zip code
State
Country

Example;

Av. Whatever 12345, Floor 5-A
Buenos Aires 1007
Argentina

When clicking on the address the GPS of my wish opens , finds the country, city but not the street because of the additional Floor and department information. Without this additional information everything well with Google Maps or Sygic.

So, how should i add this additional Floor and department information to my address without the GPS has problems to find the main location. Also from ICS on there is only one filed to add the whole address not as with Gingerbread where you had a field for street, city, etc.

HTC Desire :: Address Book Only Gives One Line Of Address

May 30, 2010

Just getting used to my HTC Desire, after reading your forum I was comforted regarding battery life and it seems much better now than the first few days.
I see another post on this but no answer, the address book only gives one line of the address is then any way round this? Even my first pda a Psion 3 had the option of which fields to display etc. there seems very little option to format what is seen, not that I am unhappy about the rest but to have to edit to see all the address is barmy.
Another thing way back then that still is not found is search all fields of the contacts, i.e. to find a number of someone that rang on another phone.

Android :: Android Can't See Devices On Local Domain

Oct 16, 2010

I'm having an annoying issue with Android development. I have a webserver (Tomcat) running on my Macbook which is connected to the local network via wifi. I have my Sprint EVO connected to the same network using wifi. The only way I can connect to the Tomcat instance is by raw IP address. If I use the Macbook name with or without the ".local" domain suffix it does not recognize the host name. The emulator behaves the same way. My iPhone can resolve the host name as can the iPhone simulator. So, I'm thinking either this is a bug in the Android platform or I've missed/accidentally tweak some hidden config somewhere in both the emulator and the device?

Android :: Apps Never Finish Downloading / Resolve This?

Nov 4, 2010

I'm using "AppBrain App Market". I have installed a bunch of apps, but some get stuck and just stay in "Downloading" state. They just never finish downloading. I see the progress bar "barbershop pole" style but there is no sign of progress. Some are new installations, some are updates.

This is despite the fact that some apps HAVE successfully downloaded and installed. What could the problem be? How do I resolve this?

Cancelling the download and restarting the download resolved the problem once. (Downloads / click on neverending download item, Cancel Download)

But if the button series is (Downloads / click on neverending download item, *Installing*). Then the Installing button is greyed out then I'm stuck.

This thread did not provide any solutions: Market Apps Finish Downloading but Won't Install
