i am getting this error java.lang.NullPointerException at android.content.ContextWrapper.getPackageManager when am trying to get list of all installed applications on the device. Well let me explain what my program is doing. I have a server that starts when my application is started, and the client pings the server and asks to get a list of installed applications. The Server then asks the getPackageManager() and gets all the installed applications. But the getPackageManager returns the nullpointerexception. The Server is written in a java environment and is started from my android application. Could someone please tell me what am missing and why i am getting this error? hanks alot!!!Please find the code...
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there anything the Dalvik VM supports (in terms of bytecode) which is not used currently because the .class files don't have it?
As an example, if people would write their own Source-to-DX converter for their functional language XYZ, would they be able to implement e. g. full tail calls although the .class file does support tail calls only under certain circumstances?
I do an import of the full package name / java file, and if I do a <classname>.<method>, SOMETIMES I can get it to access - other times I get a lot of can't use a static in a non static bunch of talk. I'll admit I'm new to Java, so what do I need to do? Call a class instance first, then call my methods? I'm rather confused by this, as I want to put all of my 'functions' into a FunctionsList.java file, and all of my main Activity (UI) into a MyActivity.java file.
For example:
<MyActivity.java>
import com.example.FunctionsList;
private class MyActivity extends Activity {
FunctionsList.function();
}
9/10 times I get that static/non-static error. If I put all of my functions into MyActivity.java, I have zero problems!
Is there any way to access the value (any constants) from Android.mk file to my java file.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know the absolute path of an image (say for eg, /sdcard/cats.jpg). Is there any way to the content uri for this file? Actually in my code I download an image and save it at a particular location. In order to set the image in an ImageView currently I open the file using the path, get the bytes and create a bitmap and then set the bitmap in the ImageView. This is a very slow process, instead if I could get the content uri then I could very easily use the method ImageView.setImageUri(uri)

I'm working on an Android app, that connects to a .crl file on the Internet and gets some data from it. I need to be able to decode this file (like the ASN.1 JavaScript decoder) and then use the decoded data.
how can I access the decoded data from my Android app? Is there some way to reference the decoded text online?
I have this problem. Two apps: app_a and service_s. Service_S creates file in /tmp. After create this file, service_s uses FileUtils.setPermission to change file mode to 666. Then app_a tries to delete this file. But I always failed when deleting. It seems the files are private. One application cannot delete files which another application creates. Is there any way to delete this file?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to define each tab's content in a different XML file so the visual editor in Eclipse can be used. That is, without all of the tabs being laid over each other. The visual editor doesn't even seem to work with the XML example provided here: [link text][1]

I have tried to define each tap in it's own file, for example. code...
And when adding the tab I use:
mTabHost.addTab(mTabHost.newTabSpec("tab_in").setIndicator("Input").setContent(R.layout.input));
But this causes the application to crash on launch. Is there any way to do this?
In android it is not directly possible to share files and folders across different application. The only way is Content Providers.
1. Is there any general (any file type) content store? Today there is Audio, Video and Image Store.
2. Wanted to write new Content Provider to store Big files, like Video and Audio. Saw some examples, like
Someone post the code for accessing .txt file available in my res folder. The code for which can be written in .java file.

That is MediaPlayer will use ContentResolver.openInputStream() to play it. I have read a lot of discussions about this problem but no one had a solution yet. When i started learning android i learned that R.java files goes to /gen folder recently i saw it on /src file (in WROX-Professional Android App Dev- sample code downloads). How does this work and also in some code i saw (xml layout) android:id="@+id/R.id.someName"(i don't remember in which web page i saw this code) I don't understand this, can somebody help me with this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been having quite some problems with R.java file. Now I have decided to do a backup and delete the file to see what happens. Nothing happened, so I created an empty R.java file and hopped for the best. Now Eclipse seems to figure out that the file was tempered with and even issues a warning: R.java was modified manually! Reverting to generated version. And that's all there is. I tried building it manually but got no results. So, I have two questions: 1. what should I do to force Eclipse to generate the file. 2. what is happening here? How is the file created, where is the code that is generating the file? I would appreciate any help.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to write a java program that will install an apk file on android. I saw that there is an Intent action: ACTION_PACKAGE _ INSTALL, available and the developer reference says: "Broadcast Action: Trigger the download and eventual installation of a package" So I wrote a program like so:
Intent newintent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PACKAGE_INSTALL); File apkFile = new File("/data/data/HelloAndroid.apk"); newintent.setData(Uri.fromFile(apkFile)); sendBroadcast(newintent);
But this fails to do the intended task (which is download and install the application). I'm not able to figure what is happening to this broadcast intent, no logs get printed in LogCat. Any pointers on where to look or how to proceed?
I plan to do our builds via Hudson and have android apk files available for download there. Is R.java in the /gen directory something that you check-in with you VCS? Or is it something that needs to be ignored and android sdk will generate every time if it doesn't exist?
