Motorola Droid : ROM Comparison / T-Chart Request

Feb 23, 2010

I hope what I'm asking hasn't been asked, but if so, I'd gladly take a link in the right direction. Is there a comparison chart/ T-chart that compares the various roms out there?Something that compares build (2.01 vs 2.1), features (wireless tether, live wallpapers, etc), speed results, strength/weakness narrative etc. similar to what you'd find on a consumer guide, perhaps in a scope and sequence type of alignment that alludes to release dates?I've heard "go with the rom that best suits your need", but a diagram like the one suggested might help the community.Perhaps a knowledgeable veteran would be interested in such a project? If I'm way off, just tell me to go pound sand.

Motorola Droid X :: Droid X Vs IPhone 4 Video Recording Comparison

Jun 25, 2010

BGR has a video comparison up. The Droid X has much better contrast both indoor and outdoor. The iphone has horrible bloom in highlights outdoors Which crushes all detail. I would even go as far to say that the iPhone video is really bad. Not surpisingly, he declares iPhone the winner because it is 30fps and not 24fps. Personally I couldn't see the difference between the two speeds.

HTC Droid Eris :: Interesting Comparison - Layout Of Components

Mar 26, 2010

Interesting article comparing not-our-phone to an iPhone. That in itself is an interesting comparison. What I found most interesting was the layout of the components. Not sure if it's identical in our phones as it is in the Nexus One, but it was pretty cool to see.

Droid vs Eris Pics & Video

Found this topic on the Droid forum. I find it pretty interesting and pretty interesting that the Eris can keep up with the Droid and that no flash isn't as big of an issue as you would think.

Might change some minds if the flash feature is something you thing is big when deciding between Eris and Droid.

Motorola Droid X : Comparison Benchmark Tests Between 2.2 Dinc And DX?

Sep 6, 2010

Does anyone care to see the comparison benchmark tests between the 2.2 Dinc and DX? I switched back to my Dinc and installed 2.2 and curious if anyone wanted to see them cause i'll post them or video the results. Here are just the graphics.

Graphics:

Total Graphics Score:
DX: 23.985842
Dinc: 26.40585

Draw Opacity Bitmap:
DX: 7.3142858
Dinc: 9.507893

Draw Transparent Bitmap:
DX: 7.356322
Dinc: 6.6428804

Can anyone explain to my why the Dinc gets better graphics than the DX? I thought the DX had a separate GPU which makes the picture quality that much better for the DX and should be smoother. Am i wrong?

I notice that on the imap server I cannot use WiFi to check my email. When I use the Yahoo mail as a pop server it works perect on WiFi. I don't understand the difference. Which is better imap or pop?

Motorola Droid 2 :: Useful Comparison B/w Droid 1 / Droid2

Aug 18, 2010

Seems like I got NO actual feedback from the useless reviews of the droid 2 so far so I'm listing the differences that I have noticed on mine so far.
1: it loads up all your old apps and updates them automatically upon activation, all my droid replacement refurbs didn't do this
2: its faster (can't tell how much until I've used it for a few weeks) but transitions through screens are smoother
3: it comes with motoblur supposedly, I don't even know what this is, so I can't tell any difference, thus anyone who wants a droid 2 but to have it operate like a droid 1...mine does...so uhhh I don't get it.
4: the graphics are different, icons are different, I like both the droid 1 on 2.2 and the droid 2, they are similar but the colors are often reversed in a lot of menus
5: ergonomically it feels better, camera button and volume button are much better feeling.
6: battery door cover looks almost identical but the foam is thicker and it is on their tighter than any of my 4 droid 1's
7: keyboard is much more tactile with the raised buttons and I like the arrows much better than the dpad, however I'll use the pre-installed swype for most my typing since that's what I'm used to.
8: calendar still doesn't scroll in month mode LAME only scrolls in week mode
9: camera mode is faster on droid 2..I think....I initially started it and droid 1 took 10 seconds to load, but after a battery pull they are closer in speed, so hard to say if there's an actual difference.
10: the unlock swipe takes longer on the droid 2...dunno why
11: on droid 1...gmail would always get confused on conversations that were of the same subject line for example if the subject was blank, it would combine emails from different senders....and it wouldn't show the correct email unless you got in the emial out and back in, droid 2 doesn't have this problem, it just shows EVERY email in the list, and you can scroll from oldest to newest...big improvement
12: start up time from power on is about 2 seconds faster on droid 2...not really a marked difference
13: all the icons are different...I actually perfer all the icons on the droid 1 versus the droid 2...but i'm not that 14: forgot to mention they changed the order and icon for the menu / back / home / search buttons on the screen...this is just annoying..why did you have to change the order...lol..I'm used to my back being all the way on the left, now it's 2nd from the right.
15: the alarm is much improved, it used to switch between portrait and landscape as you try to snooze thus cancelling the alarm, it now functions where the entire screen is the snooze and in order to cancel you have to slide to unlock...so to speak
15: Gallery is improved, it allows scrolling up and down with the slider that's found in contacts and it references the dates the pics were taken so you know how old of pics you're searching through
16: Camera has integrated gps function to show where photo was taken
17: separate camcorder app
18: power, volume, and camera buttons feel much better, fit and finish is much tighter
19: usb fits much tighter then before
20: speed while loading memory heavy application is greatly improved such as raging thunder 2, the load time is about 5 seconds faster.
21: has DNLA so you can share photos / audio / video with tv's or computers of the same DNLA technology
22: the market is different: shows comments in their own window AND allows for automatic updating, you can select this per app, I don't remember this being on my 2.2 droid 1???

Android : SDKs And Comparison With The IPhone

Apr 11, 2009

Now before I start on the iPhone comparison I'm going to pre-empt the normal "But Android is open source....." response by saying lets be honest and admit it as it stands Android is not an open source project because the public "open source" repository is pretty worthless in its' current state.

The last time I tried to build the master branch it failed missing some Google internal API classes. The SDKs I've produce from the cupcake branch seem to be considered by Google employees as pretty useless with comments like "This is why we want to be clear it is "unofficial," because it is not actually a working SDK" being thrown around and networking in the emulator still being broken a week after users started reporting the showstopper problem (And Romain did hint that Google have a fix, I read http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/msg/41fcefc36bd16d44 as "there is a version where this is fixed"). And as we all know you can't use it to build the exact versions of the open source parts of either of the two firmware versions that have shipped on the G1.

To me it seems little more than code dump which is aimed at ensuring Google can keep saying "But it is open source and not just a Google project"

Now, in the last week I had few conversations with iPhone developers so I could compare the Android developer experience to that of what is perceived as our nearest competitor and they are laughing at us (seriously, when I mentioned the G1 most of them responded by initially chuckling). The general consensus among them was;

- Yes, you pay $99 for the iPhone dev kit, but you get "free" external testing (i.e. at apple) and commercial quality support with many queries being turned around in hours or a couple of days at worst. Compare that to some of the support queries on b.android.com for basic problems things like a Android failing to connect to wireless lans with hidden SSID (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1041) which, after *five and a half months* is still marked as "New" and doesn't have a single response from a Google employee.

- The most common cause of App Store listing rejections are things that users would complain about anyway. This includes things like performance characteristics, UI anomalies, and inconsistent behaviour. This is the type of stuff that is left for users to find out on Android and only comes to light when 1* or 2* comments are posted and even then you don't know if it's a one off on the users device or possibly something specific to their region (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2372).

- The normal amount of time from submission to app store listing is around 7 days. Some apps take months to go through the approval process, but that is because of intellectual property concerns, concerns over offensive content, or is because the app has to be re-reviewed a few times to meet the apples performance and behaviour guidelines. Yes it's not as fast as Android, but you know that once it's on the market it's of a quality where you're not going to get bombarded with user queries about problems straight off.

- Most of the developers actually feel valued by Apple and feel that Apple does what it can to make sure they get the tools they need to do their job and ensure they're apps. This has been re-enforced by allowing the developers to beta test the new firmware and develop against it.

Personally, it's made me shell out $99 for an iPhone SDK, dust off my Nokia N81, and spend $75 on eBay on a Blackberry so I can explore the alternatives.

Android :: Photo Gallery Comparison - Good And Bad Features (HTC / Nexus1)

Jul 10, 2010

I am wondering if there is a pics app that will cover all my needs on my Desire. Currently running both the Nexus1 Gallery and the default HTC Photos. Both have good and bad points.

HTC Photos
Good:
-Only shows my pics, not the album art and ebook art stored elsewhere on SD
-Has a simple Facebook pics option
-Uploads direct to Picasa/FB,etc
Bad:
-No Picasa albums viewable (most of my pics are on Picasa)
-Cant multi tag pics (needed for doing bulk uploads/shares)

Nexus1 Gallery
Good:
-Beautiful interface!
-Shows Picasa galleries automatically
-Has multi-tag
-Uploads direct to Picasa/FB,etc
Bad:
-Shows EVERYTHING on my sd card, and has no option to remove pics/directories
-No basic editing options (crop, rotate, etc as the HTC app has)
-No Facebook albums display

HTC EVO 4G :: Kernels / Set CPU Battery Comparison?

Sep 18, 2010

So I have been playing around with different kernels and settings and logging them in System Panel. I will explain details below each pic. Usage was the similar each day with a little bit of tethering, alot of web surfing, imobsters texting and email with kids playing some games here and there as well. Running Fresh 3.2 with different kernels on different days. Monday night I installed Fresh 3.2 and ran the Fresh kernel with SetCPU ondemand and screen off profile and ran it the same way through Thursday. Late Thursday evening I installed Kings #9 bfs kernel and uninstalled SetCPU and ran it all day Friday Late Friday I reinstalled SetCPU and set it to conservative and ran it that way all day Saturday. As you can see, Tues, Wed, and Thurs were all very consistent. Tues I got appx 15-16 hours, Wed I got 14-15 hours and Thurs appx 12-13 hours. Friday was by far the best just letting the kernel do its thing with no SetCPU. Saturday sucked! Battery was dead by 6 pm with appx 9 hours use. I just flashed the Fresh stock kernel back on and uninstalled SetCPU and will see how that compares tomorrow. Sure would like to see the 1.5 days flipz is getting! I have read several places now that SetCPU may be counter productive since the newer kernels are managing things better lately. Does anybody know if the Fresh 3.2 stock kernel is using HAVS?
