Android :: Classloader To Launch Activities

Jan 10, 2010

I'm still in the concept stage so I don't need implementation details. My question is whether it is possible is transfer a JAR file over a socket and use a classloader to launch an activity.

Android :: Activities In Application - Which Should Launch First?

Nov 9, 2010

I created an app with one activity, and it works just fine. Having though more about the app, I decided to add another activity which be the welcome screen of the app, with a nice logo and some buttons. This app should direct the user to the activity I mentioned before. The only trouble is - I can't find out where and how can I determine which activity should launch first, the moment the app loads. Do I need to create the entire app from scratch, but this time programing the home activity first?

Android :: How Do I Get Multiple Icons To Launch Different Activities In One Application?

Jul 17, 2010

I have an application with two activities and I'd like to be able to have two icons appear in the launcher, each launching the respective activity within the app.Specifically, I want one icon to launch my main app, and another icon to launch my settings activity. Is this possible?This creates two launcher icons, but they both run my main app instead of the second icon running my settings app. I've tried just having the launcher category but then I don't get an icon so it looks like I need the main action as well.Is this the right approach or should I be declaring two applications in the manifest instead?

Android :: Can I Launch Different Activities On Startup Depending On User Preferences

Nov 2, 2010

I have a ListActivity and a MapActivity. I would like to launch either one of these activities on application startup that has been chosen by the user in a preferences window.

So far the only way I see to launch an activity on application startup is to specify it in the application manifest file using...code...

I am thinking I might have to start an activity that does nothing but looks at the user preferences and then launches either the ListActivity or MapActivity. Seems like a waste to have an activity do nothing but launch another activity. In my research I have not found any solution to this problem.

Android :: ClassLoader Leaking Memory?

Dec 17, 2009

I have a ClassLoader in Activity's onCreate which loads a specific class from a library, and is working fine, except that when activity is destroyed, the memory resources about the loaded class are not released.If the same activity gets created multiple times very quickly (by launching it, and destroying it by pressing the Back button), and the process doesn't happen to be killed by Android yet, the memory usage of the corresponding process grows continuously until the app crashes,and process dies.The problem is that this happens even if no objects are instantiated using the loaded class. There seems a problem with garbage collector, which doesn't seem to release resources about the loaded class on Destroy even if there are no references to it.If android would have killed the process right away when the last activity of the process gets finished, there wouldn't be a problem, but this is managed by Android system, and it doesn't always kill the process right away. A workaround may be to kill the process explicitly on destroy, but this is not encouraged way to do, as Android is supposed to manage the process.

An alternative is to have a functionality that allows a class to be unloaded onDestroy, but this doesn't exist. By design, the garbage collector is supposed to take care of this.Is there a solution regarding this?

Android :: Correct Use Of Classloader (especially In Android)

May 9, 2010

I read some documentations about classloaders, but im still not sure where and why they are needed. The Android API says: Loads classes and resources from a repository. One or more class loaders are installed at runtime. These are consulted whenever the runtime system needs a specific class that is not yet available in-memory.So if i understand this correct, there can be many classlaoders which are responsible for loading new classes. But how the system decides which to use? And in which situation should a developer instantiate a new classloader? In the Android API for Intent there is a method

If activity A which is located in Project A (in Eclipse) defines an object which i want to send to Activity B in Project B using putExtra of the Intent object. If this object which is send over the Intent is not defined (source code in project B), then there is a NoClassDefFoundException. So can i use the method setExtraClassloader to avoid this exception? If yes, how can i decide which classloader object i have to pass? And how do I instantiate it correctly?

Android :: When To Use More Activities?

Nov 14, 2010

I have an Activity which is an OpenGL view. I also have an xml layout to use for preferences. Until now, to show the preference menu, I just brought it to front by setContentView(). And the same to get back to the OpenGL view. But is this a case where I should give the preference menu its own Activity? I guess this would make a few things much easier. For example, the back button would just work, opposed to now where I have to code it or it will just exits the application.And if this is a good idea, how do I pass data both ways? I have a class that store all preferences. Can I send it to the Activity and back again? Or is the best way to store the preferences in a sqlite database and then use it for passing data?

Android :: Launching Activities Within Tab

Aug 20, 2009

I have an application with three tabs. Through various interactions with the items in the tabs I end up launching other activities. The client has reviewed this and would like the activities launched "within" the tabs, so the tabs remain visible and if the user clicks the tab it goes back to the original activity defined in the setContent function. Is this possible and how would I go about this from other activities? (ie the child activities, not the one that defines the TabHost and has access to call setContent)?

Android :: Activities UI Persistence

Jun 10, 2010

I need to have two activities in an Android app that can be switched between each other with UI persistence.I would like the changes made in step 2 to be visible in step 4.I have tried using the singleInstance activity tag on Activity B to no avail. I would also prefer a more elegant solution than simply writing all object properties to a file or SQLite table.It seems that this behaviour must be easily achievable given that Android does it automatically for calls to onBackPressed() where the parent Activity's UI is saved.

Android :: Activities Vs Views

Jul 8, 2010

I am working on an Android app that has multiple screens the user will need to navigate between and I am curious what the best practices are when switching between those screens. I am torn between creating a new Activity for each screen and simply changing the view (setContentView(R.layout.whatever)). The screens all share at least some variable values so I'm leaning toward changing views and using class level variables, but I'm worried a single activity could become very large and confusing with logic for multiple screens in a single file. I'd like to keep the code clean and separated, but I also don't want to be passing several variables around between views if that isn't needed.Being new to Android development, I'm hoping some more experienced members of the community could share their thoughts and let me know how best to handle it

Is there a way to get a list of all apps and their activities and intent filters? Basically, I'd like to know what another app is "listening to" so I can provide an Intent that matches. (I suppose that this will require an ADP, which is fine).

I tried grabbing the AndroidManifest.xml from an .apk file in /data/ app, but that didn't seem to work - I ran jar -xf on the apk, but the xml wasn't plain ASCII.
