Launching a Streetview intent for a location doesn't guarantee that a Streetview exists for that location. If the Streetview doesn't exist, the user just sees a black screen that spins. Is there a way to programmatically check if it exists before launching the Streetview intent?

I am currently trying to use StreetView in my application, but I does not work. I use an AVD based on the Google API which has Maps (display a simple map works well). My activity extends MapActivity and tries to call streetview:

Is there a way to test this in the emulator, i.e, do I need to install something extra? I'm presuming this is on the actual G1 phone with v1.5. Does anyone know? I'm also getting 100% failures in calls to getFromLocationName(). Is this related?

Is there a way to check and see if the activity exists? I don't think I can catch the runtime exception since startActivity() doesn't throw it.
I have a database of notes and lists, with three association tables.
Basically, lists are parents of notes and other lists, and notes can be parents of other notes in a outline like hierarchy.
I am using this query to return all notes within a list as well as the number of subnotes each note has.

This query works just fine, but it's overkill. I don't need to return count(n2.note_id) as Num_Subnotes because I'm only using that value to check if the note has ANY SUBNOTES AT ALL. Essentially it's a boolean value where 0 is false and > 0 is true.
It seems to me that counting all those records is a waste of time when I could just return 1 after finding the first matching value.
Is there a more efficient way to check if count(n2.note_id)>0 in the above query?
I have an activity that starts a long-running service which in turn adds an icon to the status bar. When the activity gets invisible, e.g. by pressing the Home button, and the pressing the icon in the status bar a new activity is created instead of showing the already created activity. If you now press the back button the new activity is destroyed and the activity created in the first place gets visible. How do I make the invisible activity brought to front when pressing the icon in the status bar instead of creating a new activity?

In MyClass, I try to use an intent to launch the activity AnotherActivity. Since the constructor takes a context as parameter, I simply tried to store a context from the activity in the constructor, and then use it when I try to create my intent.However, even thought none of the arguments are null (checked that with a simple if-statement), intent seems to be null and a NullPointerException is thrown. I am creating an application that checks the installation of a package and exits after launching the market-place with its id.
When I try to launch market place with id of an application say com.mybrowser.android by throwing an intent android.intent.action.VIEW with url: market://details?id=com.mybrowser.android, the market place application does launches but crashes after launch.
The application com.mybrowser.android doesn't exist on the market- place.

A few notes. I am creating the "mutable" bitmap after seeing someone using it and it seems to work better than without it. And I am using the parse method on the Uri class and not the fromFile because in my code I am calling these in different places and when I am creating the intent I have a string path instead of a file. Now for my problem. The file gets created. The intent launches a dialog asking me to select a viewer. I have 3 viewers installed. The Astro image viewer, the default media gallery (I have a milstone on 2.1 but on the milestone the 2.1 update did not include the 3d gallery so it's the old one) and the 3d gallery from the nexus one (I found the apk in the wild). Now when I launch the 3 viewers the following happen:
Astro image viewer: The activity launches but I see nothing but a black screen.
Media Gallery: I get an exception dialog shown "The application MediaGallery (process com.motorola.gallery) has stoppedunexpectedly. Please try again" with a force close option.
3D gallery: Everything works as it should.
When I try to simply open the file using the Astro file manager (browse to it and simply click) I get the same option dialog but this time things are different:
Astro image viewer: Everything works as it should.
Media Gallery: Everything works as it should.
3D gallery: The activity launches but I see nothing but a black screen.
As you can see everything is a complete mess. I have no idea why this happens but it happens like this every single time. It's not a random bug. Am I missing something when I am creating the intent? Or when I am creating the image file? As noted in the comment here is the part of interest in adb logcat. Also I should note that I changed the way I create the image file. Since I want to create a file that reflects an online file I simply download it instead of creating a Bitmap and then creating the file (this was done because at some point I needed the Bitmap but now I do it the other way around). The problems persist thought and are exactly the same:

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an activity that is showing a video and when the user clicks a button, a new activity is launched. When the video activity stops, I pause the video view. When the video activity starts up again, I try to resume the video view videoView.start(), however, the video starts over from the beginning. I'm thinking that the buffer must be lost somewhere, so I now try to capture the current position via videoView.getCurrentPosition(), however, this is always returning 0.
Anybody know how to resume video playback when an activity starts up again?

I was told that the reason that I keep seeing the "No update file exists" message when I check "update firmware" is because I have the latest version.
At some point my phone was updated without giving me a message. I did notice the red and blue arrows yesterday. But there was no message. My SD card mounted and dismounted on its own and gave an error message, and then all references to the error and SD card disappeared.
If your phone is/has exhibited this sort of behavior, you may already have the update.
Sorry for the newbie question, but does anyone know how I can check whether an IntentService is already running? I'm starting an IntentService from onCreate within a normal Activity, and that means that if the user minimises and maximises the application, it gets called twice. I'm wondering if I need to use something like the solution here http://bit.ly/du3VW5 or whether there's a simpler way.

My app in question has an intent filter in place to launch my application when opening an email attatchment from the "Email" app. My problem is if I launch my application first through the the android applications screen and then launch my application via opening the Email attachment it creates two instances of my root activity. steps: Launch root activity A, press home Open email attachment, intent filter triggers launches root activity A Is it possible when opening the Email attachment that when the OS tries to launch my application it detects there is already an instance of it running and use that or remove/clear that instance?

I need to find out the state of the pending intent, in other word, is this pending intent working or not. Boz i may need to cancel this pending intent, but before canceling it i want to make sure it's active.
But i see no function in AlarmManager can read this status.
I am struggling to find a way to determine if a valid network is available to an app. specifically, if there's a problem making a network connection, i would like to be determine if it's on the client (app) side, or a problem with the remote server. i happen to be attempting a URL connection (using http client) and the wide and varied possible exceptions don't seem like a reliable method. for example, when the network is down on the phone, i received "unknown host exception", which doesn't really indicate the root cause ... it's possible to get that exception with a valid network connection also. at other times i get other exceptions, such as socket exception. is there a way to ask the phone if it's network ready? the other option i thought was to ping a known good server to see if it responds ... with an IP address. kind of a heavy weight option and not foolproof.
