I have been looking for a method to change the default SMS application's preference programmatically.
I found that those preferences are stored as "shared preferences", probably in data/data/com.android.sms/something.xml, but I am not able to get to that directory since I haven't rooted my phone.
Do you have any clue?

I'm trying to give an option to users to be able to change the theme to the light one. I can't find any command or anything for this. I know I can set this in the Manifest file but this is not what I'm looking for.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Service and a PreferenceActivity that allows the user to edit some preferences. I would like to restart the Service once the user is done with the PreferenceActivity.
I understand that I can register onChange listeners for individual preference changes, but I do not want to restart the Service as each preference changes. I would like to do this when the user is done editing all the preferences. Short of having a "Apply Now" button in the PreferenceActivity, I do not see a straightforward way of doing this.

Say my app has a widget and I use a configuration screen to do initial app widget setup and set a few preferences.
I want the user to be able to change those settings by simply going into my app's settings screen and clicking an intent preference to open up the same options the user was given when the app was created.
Can I use the same activity as the configuration activity? Will I have to handle it differently? How does the existing widget get updated with the new settings?
How can I get this to work?
I am using a PreferenceActivity to let the user set some values. I am feeding it the xml file with the defined preferences.
I have set all the android:defaultValue="" for them.
When I start my application, I need the preferences, or if they are not set yet manually, I want the default values:

However, when android:defaultValue="true" I still get false. So, it looks like the defaultValues set in the XML are not used anywhere but when initializing the preferences-screen.
I don't want to hardcode the default values in the getBoolean() method. So, is there a way get the default-values with only defining these in 1 place?

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis comes up because I am changing the model for my freed and paid apps. Besides all the other things I need to figure out to build this (I'm trying the library method), I'd like to transfer preferences smoothly from DEMO app to paid App. I'm sure that some of you are old hands at this and can give some advice. I've tried the Demo and License, where a license app will unlock the Demo app and make it full.
The Market users can't handle that. My customers didn't want to have two app icons once they installed the license. So I made it invisible. Now I have users that say they can't "open" the license after purchase. It states very clearly in the app description that they need to install the free version first, but I've discovered that not everyone reads that vast 325 character description before buying even some of the most expensive apps on the Market.
I've decided not to fight it. I do believe that customers will be more happy overall and there will be less refunds, if they do try the demo app first. It gives them 16 days to try instead of 24 hours to get a refund. But I'm not going to force that. So, I'll be going down the Demo and Full model route. Just as an aside, I really wish the market would support time limited trials. There is difference between real support and faking it as I have been.
When I log into my email accounts that I have set up it automatically downloads the entire message, including the attachments. I would like to have the option to decide whether or not I want to see the whole message. On my old phone it was in the settings, but I can't seem to find anything on this one. Anyone know where/how I can do this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to start with a consistent test environment so I need to reset/clear my preferences. Here's the SetUp for test I have so far. It's not reporting any errors, and my tests pass, but the preferences are not being cleared.
I'm testing the "MainMenu" activity, but I temporarily switch to the OptionScreen activity (which extends Android's PreferenceActivity class.)
I do see the test correctly open the OptionScreen during the run.

My application is used on multiple platforms so it saves it preferences to a file (rather than to the standard Android SharedPreferences).
Is there any easy of reusing the PreferenceActivity to save preferences to a file or is it a case of creating a whole new activity to do the job? If the latter is the case is there a layout I can use that will make the activity look like the normal preferences screen? PreferenceActivity uses com.android.internal.R.layout.preference_list_content but this doesn't appear to be available to apps for reuse.

1) I have user preferences defined in res/xml/preferences.xml so that users can manage their preferences with a PreferenceActivity.
2) I'd like to define another file for global configuration preferences of my app.
What is the best way to manage my app config preferences? Should I create another XML file with config values or should I specify those config values in strings.xml? What is the best practice for managing config preferences?
I am attempting to add a simple preferences file in a new Android project (New -> Android XML File), but it doesn't appear to be working correctly.
There is no root element to choose from when I select the Preference type layout. If I press Finish, it doesn't do anything. See screenshot below.
We're having to change our app's name due to it being somewhat close to a mark owned by a large company that believes consumers are easily confused. I had been assuming that this was simply a matter of changing the name listed in our Market description when we publish an update, but has anyone done this before? I want something that allows me to switch among: completely silent, vibration without ringer, vibration with ringer. I currently use the free app "Profiles' by "egg 'n stone". It's ok, but I was wondering if there's anything better.
I know there are plenty of widgets to enable/disable ringer and vibration; I tried several, but most didn't work well, especially when I tried to combine ringer and vibration: i.e. they were ok if I only wanted to enable or disable one of the two, but not both. Coming from Nokias and the Iphone, I must say I'm really disappointed there isn't soemthing integrated in the OS to switch profiles (like with Nokias) or at least a physical button to enable/disable the ringer, like in the Iphone.
I have an application on android market which is signed with my keystore, this application is a paid one, But now i have same application with some restricted features and this app is Free. both the apps are on android market. But the problem is I signed both Paid and Free apps with same KeyStore. Now i want to change keystore of one of the app. How do i do this.

Couple questions:
1) I have a fairly decent handle on how to switch between activities (based on this article: http://www.linux-mag.com/id/7498) but I'm not sure how to go about creating a new one (with eclipse).
2) once I have a new activity created, how can I set it as the default activity of my application? I presume I could just change the name of the classes...but is there a more elegant way to handle that (maybe within the AndroidManifest.xml)?
