Android :: Can't Keep AlertDialog On Screen When KeyEvent.KEYCODE_BACK Is Handled With 1.5 (??)
May 29, 2009
I've got something simple where I want to raise an AlertDialog after catching this keypress:
CODE:............................
The interesting thing here is that when you hit the back button, you *do* see the AlertDialog for a split second, but then you're back at the previous screen you were at. Almost as if the system is hellbent on sending the user back to the previous screen, regardless of what the developer has constructed around this event. I'm using 1.5r2 here.

I am trying to figure out what is the best way to go about creating dialogs. I can either create my own Dialog class (which, to me, is more clean and organized), or I can use AlertDialog.Builder (which would be done inline, and funky looking)... What are the positivies and negatives of either implementation?

I want to display an alert in the call screen when the user initiates a call.
Currently I have:
- A class MyAlert extends Activity to view and process the alert
- A class CallReceiver extends BroadCastReceiver to process the call
From CallReceiver, I launch the alert with startActivity on MyAlert. The problem is that the alert appears in my main activity, so we don't see it at the right time, but only if we open the app, what is totally useless.

It seems when screen orientation changes, the activity's onCreate() method is called. In my onCreate() method, I have an AlertDialog which pops up when the activity is called. The problem is when I switch the screen sideways, the popup is displayed again. How can I avoid this?

I find the force close Report option very useful as a developer- the stack trace is really useful to see and I've been able to solve many bugs by using it. However, there are places in my app where (quite rightly) I've used a try/catch statement to handle Exceptions. The problem being, that this prevents a force close and so I can't get the data of the error, which would be helpful for bug fixing or even just giving better error messages. Is there any way to report an Exception which has been handled? And which version of Android did the Report option come about in?

Can someone point me to documentation with the definitions / meanings (i.e., what action is expected to be performed) for the KeyEvents? Aside from the obviouse KEYCODE_A to KEYCODE_Z, etc. there are some that I don't understand and I cannot find any mention anywhere on the web ?! Specifically the following, but generally all of them: KEYCODE_EXPLORER KEYCODE_ENVELOPE. Also, is there a meta-key to dismiss the keyboard via an injected KeyEvent?

my goal is to target with a keyevent a specific application running either in foreground or background from a background service. I tried many solutions, but have not yet managed to do it. The few solutions tried (all from a background running service): With a broadcast, I tried to target the first application (for example the phone app) that would manage the key event
KeyEvent lKey1Up = new KeyEvent(KeyEvent.ACTION_UP,KeyEvent.KEYCODE_ENDCALL);
KeyEvent lKey1Dwn = new KeyEvent(KeyEvent.ACTION_DOWN,KeyEvent.KEYCODE_ENDCALL);
Intent lKey1UpIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_BUTTON);
Intent lKey1DwnIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_BUTTON);
lKey1UpIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_KEY_EVENT, lKey1Up);
lKey1DwnIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_KEY_EVENT, lKey1Dwn );
sendOrderedBroadcast(lKey1UpIntent, null);
sendOrderedBroadcast(lKey1DwnIntent, null);
=> Nothing happens with my foreground phone app when the broadcast is performed while I am in a phone call state (OFFHOOK). Indeed, I was nearly sure this would not work since I have no way to specificely target the phone app.............

I'm running into some issues with input events and garbage collection, or more precisely object allocation. I am creating a game and have pretty much got my head around the OpenGL environment. I've digested all the relevant material I could find regarding performance, memory allocation etc (and watched the excellent presentation by Chris Pruett - http://code.google.com/events/io/2009/sessions/WritingRealTimeGamesAn...). I've pretty much eliminated any object allocations after initial setup from my game (which is still in its infancy), but I'm still getting a bunch of GC calls, like this:...........................

I am considering writing a mobile application for one of the following mobile platforms One area which I am struggling to get more information about is how app reviews are handled in the app stores on these platforms. In particular, I am trying to answer the following questions: Are app reviews moderated for spam/offensive language? Are app reviews ever "aged"? This could mean discarding old reviews or weighting them lower when calculating an average rating. Does publishing a new version of the app cause old reviews to be discarded?

I am writing a program which captures the keys pressed by user in android and displays it in Ubuntu. According to what I read, Android's input event device is structured around an interrupt or polling routine that captures the device-specific scancode and converts it to a standard form acceptable to Linux (as defined in input.h) before passing it to the kernel with input_event(). There are the steps which describe the translation from keyboard input to application action: 1. Window manager reads key event from Linux keyboard driver. 2. Window manager maps scancode to keycode. 3. Window manager sends both the scancode and the keycode to the application...................

Does anyone else's incredible squeak while being handled?If I tighten my grip even a little while holding it in my palm, it squeaks. It happens on the sides at the top of the phone, the side of the phone, and the bottom of the phone. The squeaking at the top and bottom of the phone aren't too bad, but it's pretty loud on the side.It's gotten to be very annoying, and I can't figure out why it's doing it. The back cover clearly isn't sitting flush with the rest of the phone and i'm not sure what to do.Should I take the back cover off and try to "tighten" it up on the side?

I'm trying to create an application that can use the android as a fax machine, IE Send a picture as a fax or receive a fax and save as a picture. So far I'm starting from the ground up and making sure I can intercept a call at the users discretion. I have an Receiver registered in the Manifest of my program with a filter of Phone_State which flags when the state has changed(IE incoming call).
So on my BroadcastReceiver I'm trying to have an AlertDialog popup prompting the user to either accept as fax or call but the AlertDialog seems to throw a android.view.WindowManager$BadTokenException Error when it has an incoming call. My code is just simple an onReceive(context arg0, intent arg1) and I pass the arg0 to the AlertDialog...
The full error message is below
CODE:.............
From what I have seen in the AlertDialog code, it passes the context as well as a Window and WindowManager, which I believe is why it's crashing, is there a better way or something else I should be using which might overlay the call screen?

I'm using ActivityInstrumentationTestCase2 to do automated black-box testing on my GUI. Is there a way to click on a dialog, or get Views belonging to the Dialog in unit tests?The only way I could come up with is to keep a reference to the dialog and have my Activity implement a getter method to let testcases access the dialog. Is there a better way that doesn't require changing my production code?

I've been working at this all day, and I'm really close but just can't get this to work. I have a button that pulls up an AlertDialog populated with saved entries that include Name and Price. Right now, I can click an item in the Dialog and have it automatically fill in the Name and Price fields in my activity. I want to also be able to long press an item and receive an option to delete it. This is my first try at an Android app, and a lot of this is repurposed from the Notepad Tutorial. Two things I can't figure out:

2) What am I doing wrong with my onCreateContextMenu? Code...
