Android :: Application License - User Require Network Access

Nov 24, 2010

We are going to make the app available for .99 on the market, but is licensing it a must? We are worried about the license query bugging the user/always requiring network access. Should we definitely license regardless of our worries?

KitKat 4.4 :: How To Deny Or Restrict Network Access To A Specific Application

Apr 2, 2014

I wanted to restrict an application from accessing network, so that application does not upload or download. Basically to stop rouge application from suspicious network activity.

I understand Android provides a way to limit/restrict network access for Mobile network, from Settings --> Data Usage screen. But I'm looking for a way to completely restrict network access (both mobile and WiFi networks) to any particular application.

I'm using Moto G, Android Kitkat

Android :: How Many Applications Require Internet Access?

Jul 24, 2010

AS per the question, how many of the HTC apps require you to be online to do anything? Like are they all weather, sat nav, or use the internet to show you locations, and such? I'm just wondering how many apps will require me to use GPRS when outside of a WiFi zone, which would be quite a lot of places really!

Android :: Symbian To Android Wifi Or Network Access Application

Sep 11, 2010

Having seen similar threads i know im not the only ex symbian user, not that i didnt enjoy my time with it but its time to move on! ive tried to see if this question has been repeated elsewhere but i couldnt so i do apologise if i missed it!

on my previous symbian devices n95 and 5800 if i used an app that required web access be that wifi or over the network it always asked me if i wanted to allow this, and i thought it was a good feature. now i just got a HTC desire and for financial reasons couldnt get an unlimited data plan from o2 in the uk just yet otherwise id be happy to let it be on all the time.

now it seems that if you want devices to connect you either have the wifi on or off, same for the mobile network. does anyone know if there is a setting or app or anything in the pipeline that might emulate this symbian function? maybe its me just being a bit funny but i found that level of control good and it didnt mean i had to go backwards and forwards turning stuff on and off. if its not possible im sure ill get used to it but it would be a good feature!

secondly i have a Ford Focus euro model with a built in bluetooth hands free to the stereo, a factory fitted option which i believe uses a nokia Bluetooth module (stereo is sony) now this really is a minor quibble but on the old phones when the bluetooth was on any incoming calls would push the ringtone through the speakers untiill i answered it

using the desire the phone still rings normally with whatever ringtone i have but it pushes a plain ring ring through the speakers, anyone know a way to change that? or mute the phone when it rings and just push the ring through the stereo?

Android :: License Source Code Of Application

Oct 16, 2010

I have an Android app and some company is interested in using part of it and rebranding it for its customers. One of the options would involve licensing the code to them for use in this specific case. Would you recommend doing that as a good option? What is the cost of licensing code in comparison to the cost of the original development. Should the license be for any use of the code, for using the codebase/year?

Android :: License Text To Use For Display In Application Under ASL 2.0

Jan 24, 2009

I'm working on an Android app that's licensed under Apache Software License 2.0. As recommended in best practice, I would like to display the license to the end user for acceptance before proceeding. However, the ASL text is large and I'm not sure whether it's a good idea to show the entire license.

I would like to know if there are any recommendations for apps under ASL on what license text to use (perhaps an abbreviated version of ASL)? Pointers to actual license text would be quite helpful. At a minimum, I was thinking to show the "Disclaimer of Warranty" section and for the whole license include the link to ASL site.

General :: Creating App Which Require Root Access

Nov 13, 2012

creating an app which requires root access.Purpose of this app

1) Able to access a file in root/data/data/*APP XYZ*/*THIS FILE*
2) Generate a random string of number
3) Replace the specific string in *THIS FILE* with the randomly generated number
4) Saves *This File*

Right now I can do it manually but it is rather tedious. Was thinking if it would be possible to create an app to do this automatically with one click.

Android :: Non Free Open Source License For Android Application?

Nov 7, 2010

I'm working on an Android App, and I want to provide a free demo and a paid full-version from the Android Market. However, I also want to provide the source code. I don't mind if people want to play with the code and install modified versions on their own devices. However, I don't want to see any free full-version binaries on the web, and a license like the GPL would allow anyone to offer some, probably even making profit that way.

If some people would rather build and deploy the app themselves instead of paying 1-5$, they can go ahead. But a convenient one-click-download button and other people making money from my efforts is not what I want. Is there any pre-existing license I can use for something like that? Furthermore, if I want to start an app as free and open source, but later decide that I want to make money from selling it, is there a FOSS license that allows me to move to the license I'm asking about above later?

Android :: Access User Installed CA Certs?

Aug 4, 2010

I've been struggling to get my application to consume user installed identity CA certs from a p12 file on an SD card. I can't seem to figure out how to access these certs once installed using the Secure Credential Storage (Location & Security > Install from SD card).

I've tried the approach recommended here by creating a TrustManagerFactory and passing it a null KeyStore but that seems to get me just the ssl related certificates.

Haven't found much in the way of documentation.

Android :: Network Access With HttpClient Using AsyncTask

Mar 16, 2010

I am trying to use a certain wrapper of HttpClient, called HTTPRequestHelper with an associated responseHandler as the basic class for my wrapper to a web service which is implemented as a singleton.

HTTPRequestHelper and samples of usage are described in chapter 6 of "Unlocking Android" published by Manning.

My problem is that invoking both the helper and the handler from a thread started on the main UI thread (either from an AsyncTask or directly) works only sporadically.

Here is the basic setup.

public class APIService { private ArrayList<Something> myThing;

Android :: Network Access Is Slow In Emulator

Aug 5, 2010

I've noticed very poor performance in the emulator (1.6 and 2.1) when trying to complete the forth statement below. It will take 5+ minutes running in the emulator. Interestingly, when I debug on my phone it's not nearly as bad at maybe a minute or so, but still not great. Running the app on my phone without debugging yields great performance (seconds). URL url = new URL(CommonProperties.BASE_SERVICE_URL + "param=1"); DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance(); DocumentBuilder builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder(); Document dom = builder.parse(url.openConnection(). getInputStream()); is there something I can do to speed up network access while using the emulator? Has anyone noticed anything similar?

When that access point becomes invalid, will it automatically switch to another accespoint? etc. I would like to use only WiFi access points and otherwise fail even tho 3G or GPRS could be available, is that possible?

The only problem I have is that when sleep policy terminates Wi-Fi connection the synchronization no longer works. Is there a way to "wake up" the Wi-Fi connection that has been put to sleep? GMail somehow manages to do that because it notifies me about new e-mail even if the phone entered sleep mode.

I want to add a big feature to an application i am developping, but as this feature interest few people and is quite independant from the main part, I would like to put that in a seperate "plugin" application.Does anyone knows any design patterns, snippets, "reference" examples about such design? In particular that separate plugin application should be able to access some tables in the main application DB. Is it possible to do that without broadcast receiver? - the main application uses a TabActivity: is it possible that a the tabactivity instanciates an Intent Activity that is part of the plugin? - does the plugin can access main application preferences (not sure this would be necessary, but better to anticipate the question!) is it possible from the plugin to access main applications ressources? At least the 2 first points are mandatory for me.
