Android :: App Crash On Phone Consistently But Not On Emulator
Aug 31, 2010
I have an app that uses quite a few graphics in it. When I open and close my app repeatedly on my emulator (1.5 - 2.2) it runs fine and by checking the heap I can see everything is being cleaned and gc'd properly. However, when I run my app on an HTC Aria phone (2.1) the app crashes every time I try to re-open it. When I look at the heap I can see that objects are NOT being cleaned up like they are in the emulator. Does anyone know why this behavior could be happening? I did try it on another HTC Aria (a friends) and it crashed the same way as on my phone so I think it's not just isolated to my particular phone. Any thoughts or ideas would be really appreciated on why things are cleaning up properly on the emulator, but not on my phone. One thing to note, is that I DID have it working and gc'ing fine on my phone a few days ago and I didn't change much and now it's not working on my phone so it's a bit of a mystery to me.

I need to run several emulator instances to test my application. When i try to run instances using emulator -data <path> option, the emulator crashes.
I got a MS Visual Studio window informing that emulator throws a "unhandled win32 exception".
The exception message in the debugger (MS Visual Studio 2008) is: "Unhandled exception at 0x77c4706c in emulator.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x03216848"
The emulator runs normally without "-data" option.

I'm and android beginner, so go easy on me. I'm trying to play a sequence of video files which I'm downloading from a server. The challenge is that I want to have a smooth transition from one file to another.
My thought is to have two MediaPlayer instances each preparing and then playing in turn. It is not clear to me if they can both share the same SurfaceView?
Or maybe, I should be using different views and swapping between them? Or, the idea is a bad idea all together?
When I try to run configure the MediaPlayer instance with a view that isn't visible it seems to crash my emulator.

My Son and I both have EVOs - his battery drains about twice as fast as mine. His application list is here: Kevdog83's Apps on the PC36100 When he checks "Battery Use", Android System is consistently 85-90% of usage, while Cell Standby and Phone Idle are typically the two biggest items for my usage. What runs under the umbrella of "Android System" that may be killing his battery?

My question is a very simple one I'm sure. It's just I'm not quite sure how to effectively describe what I'm trying to achieve.
Anyway to the point, I have a simple button, I know how to "link" a raw sound file to hand make it play. BUT what i want to do is maybe link a 3 second sound to the button and just have it loop while the user holds the button, and then stops playing when the button is let go. Anyone have any example links they could share that would be great!

I created a sqlite database to store playlists for a media player I am developing because of extended feature (rather than using the Content Provider). It works perfectly on the 1.6 emulator but FCs on anything higher than 2.0... what has changed that I need to know about as far as opening databases in SDK 2.0+? Here is the logcat.

Here is the dbhelper class

I've had an issue w/ my Internet browser closing on me for quite a while. It just closes down to where ever I was before the Internet was launched, w/o a "force close" message box. This has happened across many diff ROMs, many diff browsers, and many diff kernels. Hell, it's been happening since at least 2.1 and perhaps 2.0.1. I've tried clearing caches, wifi, lowering the kernel MHz, yet the issues still persist. Sometimes it happens instantaneously upon opening, sometimes it waits till I'm enjoying surfing away from my pc.

I'm trying to put a spinner in a sub-tab in my android app. Touching the spinner causes a crash.
Searching seems to suggest that for some reason it is not possible to use spinners in sub-tabs, but this seems silly to me. I've also tried using activity groups as an alternative to sub-tabs, but I get the same crash.
Has anyone resolved this?

I own a Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone (GT-I9100) and have installed NeatROM Lite (build number: XWLSW NeatROM Lite v4.8).
I'm developing apps and each app crash (for example occured NullPointerException) causes to freeze the device and after some minutes maybe to hot reboot (NeatROM splash screen but I don't need to enter my SIM PIN again).Maybe, because sometimes it reboots by itself, but sometimes I need to hard shutdown the device (pressing and holding the power button).
I tried to debug the application, but the only information I could get was that an exception of type RuntimeException occured. When I activate the debugger for the crashing app, the phone will not restart. The crashed app will just close.
I guess that something is wrong with the "app crash" dialog from android. I've never seen this dialog on NeatROM and when it should appear, the described procedure happens.

Is anyone else irked by the proportion of apps that cause force-close on the Eris? About 1 in 3 (maybe more) seem to do this. I assume developers are writing code for 2.0 mostly by now, but still. I would think there had be SOME level of back compatibility. It's not like I'm downloading obscure applications. These are typically highly rated applications found on the bigger review sights and AndroLib. For instance, just today, two WiFi apps and Shuffle both caused my Eris to crash. And apparently something else I haven't determined yet. What are other's experiences/success rates with applications? I'll append this post later with apps known to cause crashes. In fact, until the 2.0 upgrade, it might be a good idea for a sticky.

Recently upgraded my xperia x10 to Android 2.1.The upgrade installed fine but am unable to speak on calls for more than a few seconds since then. Few seconds after a call is connected (while receiving or making) it crashes and the phone shows no network (there is no network coverage issue) and searches for the SD card (similar to at the time of boot). The screen then goes blue.Have tried re-installing the upgrade but that doesn't solve the problem. Anybody has any ideas.

My Nexus 4 (purchased directly from Google) automatically downloaded the latest update today. I installed it, and everything crashed. My phone is now caught in a continual re-boot loop. It gets as far as the little dead robot, and then stops with the message "No command", holds for a bit, and then starts the reboot again. Has been doing this for the last half hour or so.
How can I break the cycle, or reset, or something? Anything?

I have an Android project that I have been working on and debugging just fine for several months, but for some reason it is now consistently hanging at the "Runnning tests..." step. I have experienced intermittent hangs from the beginning, but a simple retry and/or restart of Eclipse or the emulator usually resolves it. But now I am just dead in the water.I can run my tests fine, and I can debug my actual program, but I can't debug my tests.I have tried creating a new emulator and that doesn't fix it. I also cleared all my breakpoints and that had no effect. As far as what has changed lately, the primary thing is that I upgraded to rev 7 of the SDK tools. Also, I recently did some debugging (of the program not the tests) on an actual device (not the emulator). Can't see how that would impact it but I thought I would mention it.Actually I had to set Debuggable to "true" in the app manifest to get device debugging to work. Although I have never had that set in my test project, I set it, and that also had no effect on the issue.I'm running out of ideas, and I would greatly appreciate some pointers.

If I could hit 1000 hours without rebooting and I was able to. Some thoughts...
1. Unless I forgot how a freshly rebooted phone feels, it feels no different
2. I did have a few random reboot type actions but the counter never reset. Not sure what it was about
3. Browser loves to crash or just lock up which I then had to force close and restart it. I blame this on an online game I play that is not optimized very well as I have to restart chrome on my work computer after a time as it eats all the memory.
Other then that, phone works perfectly

I'm developing an Android application using Android 1.5. I'm using an older version of the SDK because I'm building it to run on a single G1 phone. I've been using a 2.1 emulator without any problems, but when I tried taking a look on my Nexus One (2.2), the application immediately stopped responding. I then tried a 2.2 emulator with the same result. Has anyone seen a similar problem or know of a possible solution? The project isn't very complicated. I have a service running in the background that listens to incoming text messages and passes those messages on to a database. When I run the program in debug mode, it never hits a breakpoint on the first line of the first activity. It is as if it cannot even load.

Finally strace gave me this:
CODE:................
And several other attempts to call "link" that also fail (sshfs does not support hard links).
Is it possible to change the emulator's behavior to create lock files somewhere in /tmp (using some hash of image path as lock file name)? I am OK to try this myself: which repositories from https://android.git.kernel.org/ are necessary to rebuild the emulator alone, and where in the sources is the code responsible for image locks?

Ok here's my problem. I'm very new to the AndroidSDK. I've ran sdparted to convert my ext3 to ext4 and just tonight I learned how to open the emulator.I used the Android development site to learn how to do all this. I ran this: emulator -avd my_android1.6 -t 2 The emulator opened up but, it looks nothing like my phone nor does it have any of the apps that my Magic 32B has. This is my question. I'd like to be able to run an application that is currently installed on my phone on my computer to enter in a bunch of data into that application to use on my phone. It's much easier to type everything out on my computer than using the keyboard on my phone. Is this possible to do with the emulator and if I can how? I'm rooted and using Cyanogen 4.2.5.
