Android :: App Better Than Lookout / Wave Secure / Mobile Defense?
Aug 25, 2010
Iv had lookout for a while now but it makes my phone very slow (moto cliq) i thought i found a better app called wave secure finds my location and can erase restore info too if stolen but its a 20 dollar monthly subscription. so i thought hmm maybe mobile defense is better but found out its in closed beta damnn so close. soo any other app i missed that can find my location, back up erase and restore my data from my phone or pc if stolen, lock down my phone, and sim card tracking would be a plus too but doesn't matter.

I was wondering what people thought about each one or which one is better and accurate? I currently have the sprint HTC Hero and running Mobile defense (MD) but not sure if i want to try Wave secure or stay with mobile defense.

i've found very interesting stuff in the internet. according to the site wave secure contained a very major security leak for some months which has been exploited. it allowed hackers to get the users PIN to login to the web central of wave secure. which then gave them access to the private data of the users, let them track the phone, ... Wave Secure still gave no comment about this. I found the blog at Wave Secure Security Vulnerability Report hope it will be fixed soon.

I find that the tracking on wave secure isn't really that efficient especially since it's now an app with a monthly subscription. The main reason is that the gps tracking on it is really pretty poor in accuracy and this is the main thing I use it for. So are there any alternatives with more accurate tracking on it? ( I mean google maps gives it more accurate than WS)

I have been running Wave secure since I had my Hero and from day one with the EVO as well. The remote tracking feature does not work well without having your GPS enabled. Without root, there is no way to turn the GPS on remotely. Now with root access, you can simply push the .apk file to the system/apps directory and Wave secure will install. Now when you log into your Wave secure portal and track, the GPS turns on. This will be great if you ever lose your phone. I tested it and it works flawlessly. Also, Wave secure says that you can make the software hard reset proof by installing in the system directory. I did not test this. Below are instructions on how to do both if you are interested. https://www.wavesecure.com/blog/how-to-make-wavesecure-hard-reset-proof.aspx

Should this app always stay open? Should I exclude it from the list of apps that close when I clear the task manager? I'm guessing it will take up virtually no memory unless someone tampers with the phone?

The title was quite blunt - but I'm writing this to warn others about paying for this product. I'm sure it is an excellent product - if you can get it to work. I made the mistake of paying for a subscription before I tried it. I have never been able to get it working.
I've been in contact with their support department who (very occasionally) reply to my email messages. I have done as they asked, run debug versions and supplied them with log files. They tell me that the problem is at their server end and they are trying to fix it. Since then (weeks ago) I've heard nothing despite repeat attempts to ask them for an update (and my money back). This morning, my phone told me that an update was available. I eagerly downloaded it in case this fixed the problem - it didn't. Just in case anyone from Wave Secure is reading this, please check support tickets IYR-245894 and BQO-385045 and you'll see how lousy you are at supporting a paying customer. So, although this product may be good, please don't buy it unless you are sure it works first. Also, if you have any problems, please don't hold your breath waiting for support from them as it probably won't happen.

So I loaded Wave secure beta to my Hero a couple weeks ago. I had occasion to travel to the west coast since and the phone locked as expected and unlocked when I entered my PIN. However, I wanted to test the remote locking feature and when I enter my login and password at the Wave secure web page it telss me I've entered incorrect info. I've verified the info multiple times but still can not login. I sent a msg to TenCube but haven't received a reply. Anyone else have this problem or know what the problem might be?

Came across a nifty little app for the Hero called Wave Secure. It lets you remotely access your phone and can be used to back up data, lock you phone, track its position and erase all the information on it ~ potentially quite handy as your Hero can store quite a lot of personal information. It's still in beta, and as a result is completely free to download and use. It seems pretty cool and simple to use but I've never really heard anything about it before. Does anyone else use it?

I have a problem I hope somebody could help me with. l recently installed a trial version of Wave secure on my HTC Hero. I lost the phone a few days after the subscription had expired so I straight away bought the full version but it doesn't seem to be able to track the phone or issue a lock for it. Has anyone experienced anything similar and would wave secure be able to track it for me?

I've had Wave secure installed for quite some time now and today the market app said that there was an update available to download. I clicked on it and there was a Note as follows: Due to a Samsung Galaxy firmware bug it can't be supported. The version number is shown as 3.0.0.62. I haven't updated because as far as I was aware the previous version was working ok, though it often sent emails to my wife stating that my phone had been stolen - usually when I was updating the rom etc. Has anyone else tried this latest update?

Just a quick question. When 2.1 is finally released, my Hero will be wiped clean and all apps will need re-installing, do you think, as the free for life wave secure offer will be over, they will want payment next time or is it a simple case of re-installing under the old terms? Hopefully this makes sense. You can probably tell I am quite new to all this!

Are there any Droid users out there that are having trouble tracking and locking their phone with the Wave Secure? It backed up my info fine but it can't locate or lock my phone in both Firefox and IE. I installed Mobile Defense before I installed Wave Secure to test them both out but I've heard of ppl running them both with no problems.

I installed a trial or free version of Wave Secure to my Droid for the purpose of backing up SMS messages. I used it once or twice. Now it's locking me out of my phone. It's asking for a PIN, and I don't know it. If you go to the Wave Secure website, there is a page for resetting the PIN, but I can't seem to enter an email or phone # with international code that it accepts.

I have used Lookout since it was introduced but lately I have been unable to connect to do a backup. Either via my phone or their website, neither method works. I sent feedback to them via their website but their silence is deafening. It keeps saying "connection error" and will NOT complete a backup. Is anyone else having backup issues? Or is it just me?

Mobile Defense Real-Time Tracking for Android Phones
Looking for that added security to protect your Android phone investment? This is the app you have been looking for and a must have for Android phone users. Mobile Defense hides itself once you install the app and activate it via SMS confirmation. There are no screenshots of the actual application except for the install screen above. Below is a screenshot of the tracking dashboard which uses Google Maps. I tried it and it tracked my phone right down to my exact address. Imagine having your phone stolen and showing up at the thief door? I would rather notify the local authorities and let them do the recovery work.
If your phone gets stolen all you have to do is log into the Mobile Defense website. The GPS on your phone lets you track its location. You can also send a message and loud audible tone(like a loud car alarm) to the phone. It works even if the ringer volume is off. The same process also works if you lose your phone. I know several friends that could use something like this. The beauty of Android is there an app out there for almost anything and more added every day.
This is a must have for all you new Android Phone users and those who haven not found this free jewel. Do you have Mobile Defense installed? Have you used it to find or retrieve your Android phone? If so please feel free to comment below. You can download this app direct to your android phone. Just scan the QR code below with Barcode Scanner application from Android Market:

I'm looking for a protocol to secure a connection between a mobile device and a web service. I want to ensure that only the mobile device can perform actions on the web service and vice versa. Data doesn't need to be encrypted. I know Oauth, but it seems that it's more used to secure connections when you got 3 different entities (Server, Consumer and Auth). Here, the Consumer and the User would be the same person. Is there a simple protocol to do that (without requiring the user to login and then authorize the access token like it is the case for Oauth)? I need to use it on different plateforms, so the protocol needs to be available at least on iPhone and PHP.
