Android :: Android Bottombar Two Buttons With Common Backgrounds Image?

Apr 25, 2010

I have a linear layout in my main.xml which has a listview. Now I want to create a bottom bar below listview. Bottombar has a background image and two buttons with their individual background images. I want to put these two buttons on common background image. I have read that this can be achieved using FrameLayout. But since I am using LinearLayout as base layout in my main.xml, is there any way to this design using linearlayout?

Android :: Lunar Lander Make Image Backgrounds Transparent?

Mar 9, 2010

I'm trying to make a GUI program with the Android SDK, using their Lunar Lander example as a significant self-teaching tool in the process. I've noticed their sprites' images' backgrounds, which were at least usually pure white, did not show up in their program. I want to ask how they did that, since their site doesn't explain simple things very well. I've managed to pull that off before on another GUI SDK, wherein all I had to do was to call a function and pass it a few floats to define a certain color, and until my code told it to do otherwise, that function would make sure that that particular color in my sprites' images was totally transparent. However I've wrestled with the Lunar Lander example and getting my own program to show some custom graphics for a week or two now, and I haven't noticed any such function call in the Lunar Lander example. I tried to look for it, but I did not find anything. I've tried to Google some tutorial or other reference material, but what I've found so far is just straying off into unrelated areas and totally dodging this EXTREMELY important lesson on the SDK's basics.

Media :: Making Backgrounds Go Into Default Backgrounds Location

Jun 6, 2010

I have two questions about wallpapers on my nexus one. First off, is there anyway to take a custom image that I have and I am using and put it into the list of "default" backgrounds so that when I change it I don't have to go through that resize hassle and everything and I can have it in a more organized location. Also are there any applications or tools out there to get great looking wallpapers for the nexus one. Sometimes when using an image it doesn't look that good and the selection thing when doing it from the gallery is annoying because of the selection has to be a square yet my screen is 800x480.

Android :: Align Image Buttons On A Curve Programatically?

Oct 6, 2010

I have a series of buttons on a main menu. Instead of the standard side by side, or one on top of the other, I'd like them to be aligned around a semi-circle. Since I can't drag and drop the buttons to the place I'd like to in the designer, I was wondering the best way to do this? Can I do it in the XML, or would it be best to do it programatically?

Android :: Supporting Multiple Screen Sizes Using Image Buttons

Apr 13, 2010

I've read the Android documentation:
http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html
but still have some questions. I'm trying to design a music application which basically has images of the instrument (ImageButton) that play a sound when clicked. However, I'm confused about how to have the ImageButtons scale to fit all the different screen sizes and how to position them.

Which layout is best used for needing to position ImageButtons in specific locations on the screen? (i.e. cymbals on a drum set) FrameLayout, RelativeLayout? If I only really care about medium and large screens, do I need to create different resources (images) for both as well as a different XML layout to position them? I'm trying to find the simplest way to do this without having to create a separate layout XML file for positioning/size and separate image resources for each screen.

I want to do this entirely in an xml layout file. When I put ImageButton xml tags inside a GridView xml body, The layout panel in eclipse is throwing an exception: UnsupportedOperationException:addView(View, LayoutParams) is not supported in AdapterView.

Android :: Common Component Externalization

Jan 8, 2010

I am a game developer and have developed a nice global high scores module. The source code is in two different games of mine and anytime I make changes I carefully copy and paste the java files from one project to the other. As I increase the sophistication of this module, the copying and pasting can take a day or two to make sure I get it right. Now I am finishing up my third game and want to add the high scores module, but copying and pasting this in three separate projects seems absurd and will take up much of my time! Is there any way to externalize this module?

Unfortunately, the module makes reference to R for strings, layouts and other resources. It also uses common Android functions and resources from the Android library. Almost anything would be easier than the method I am using now--so any and all suggestions are welcome!

Android :: Several Activities Sharing Common Code

Jul 2, 2010

I have an Android application composed by several Activities. Most of them need to check whether an active network is available or not:

public boolean isNetworkAvailable() {
ConnectivityManager cm = (ConnectivityManager)
getSystemService(Context.CONNECTIVITY_SERVICE);
TelephonyManager tm = (TelephonyManager)
getSystemService(Context.TELEPHONY_SERVICE);
...
}

I would like to move that code to a helper class in order to avoid the need to write that code in every Activity, but calls to getSystemService are only allowed from an Activity. The other alternative is to move that code to a parent activity use inheritance but:
Every activity already extends from android.app.Activity
Some of my activities already extend from a common my.package.BaseActivity
(Activity <- BaseActivity <- XXXActivity)

What do you recommend in this case? Is there any other alternative?

Android :: Include Tag And Text - Common Formatting

Apr 15, 2010

I'm trying to use some common formatting for a number of different labels, all with different text. From http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2009/02/android-layout-tricks-, it seems as though I should be able to do something like the following:
<include android:text="@string/description" layout="@layout/label"/>

Where, in label.xml, I have:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
<!-- more detailed formatting to come later --> />

For some reason, the text of the label is showing up empty when I do this. But I can successfully add an ID in this fashion, and then change the text of the label in my application code. For example:
<include android:id="@+id/description_label" layout="@layout/label"/>

Android :: Versioning And Common Code-bases With Eclipse

Sep 14, 2010

I'd like to bring out an Android app in the near future, so I was wondering how to support a couple of funcitonalities I have got used whilstdeveloping for J2ME and iPhone

first the versioning. With J2ME (using NetBeans as IDE) I had the option to auto-increment the softwwares version every time I compiled it. I was wondering if something like this is available for Eclipse and if so how to use it ? secondly a common code base. Is it possible to have a common code base for several projects ? For example I might have a game which actually uses the same code but needs different graphic resources. I'd hate to have a different project for every game/app and have to manually edit every project's source every time I want to submit a new code-change.
