Android :: Added Internet Permission - No Connection To Server
Sep 8, 2010
I wrote this:
HttpsURLConnection con = (HttpsURLConnection) new URL ("Here my server URL is provided")
openConnection(); con.setDoOutput(true); con.setDoInput(true); con.connect();//
At this point I am getting error saying Java.net.SocketException:permission denied..
Actually I am sending request to server after getting request in XML format I want parse using
xr.parse(new InputSource("URL"));
But its giving error at con.connect(); only. And I have added Internet permission in manifest file.

One of my users is experiencing an odd problem on network access via my application. Checking his logs shows up the following exception. The odd thing is that I have "android.permission.INTERNET" in application AndroidManifest.xml and many users have already used my app with no problem (I've launched it 4 months ago).
java.net.SocketException: Permission denied (maybe missing INTERNET permission) at org.apache.harmony.luni.platform.OSNetworkSystem.createStreamSocketImpl(Native Method) at org.apache.harmony.luni.platform.OSNetworkSystem.createStreamSocket(OSNetworkSystem.java:187) at org.apache.harmony.luni.net.PlainSocketImpl.create(PlainSocketImpl.java:266) at java.net.Socket.checkClosedAndCreate(Socket.java:872) at java.net.Socket.connect(Socket.java:1019) at org.apache.harmony.luni.internal.net.www.protocol.http.HttpConnection.<init> (HttpConnection.java:62) at org.apache.harmony.luni.internal.net.www.protocol.http.HttpConnectionManager $ConnectionPool.getHttpConnection(HttpConnectionManager.java:145) at org.apache.harmony.luni.internal.net.www.protocol.http.HttpConnectionManager .getConnection(HttpConnectionManager.java:67) at org.apache.harmony.luni.internal.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.get HTTPConnection(HttpURLConnection.java:821) at org.apache.harmony.luni.internal.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.con nect(HttpURLConnection.java:807) at org.apache.harmony.luni.internal.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.get OutputStream(HttpURLConnection.java:1150) ......

I'm working on a security project which needs connect to internet in a stealthy manner. It will be perfect if our app can access internet without asking for the permission INTERNET. I found it is OK to open browser with a URL without that permission but the user will notice that. Is there a way to access Internet without the INTERNET permission and hide from user?

Looking for a navigation app with no "Internet access" permission. Maps will probably be loaded manually...
I've spent some time at the market with no results. I'm looking for an old fashioned solution where you simply load in a map into your device (manually), the GPS reciever takes the required signals from the sky and shows your coordinates on the map. That's it.
No internet connection, no fancy 'in store purchases', simply a man and his interactive map- just like my grandpappy used to do back in 1845.

I have been trying to setup a Droid to Droid 3G connection. I can confirm that all works great in wifi mode. The Droid can make connection requests (Http, Telnet, raw sockets) in 3G, but I cannot get the Droid to accept a socket connection in 3G mode. I was told by Verizon that a special license may be needed to accept socket connection requests and they would send me some information. So far none has been received. If anyone knows how to program the Droid to accept socket connection requests over 3G, please respond. Also if anyone knows why this not allowed please respond.

At my campus, to get internet connection, I need to log on to a SSH server like they write:.you must manually log in to the firewall server, by establishing a pseudo-tty-less ssh connection to it. The following command can be used on most systems: ssh -T -l [username] [server-URL]I must be logged on to the server for as long as I want internet.Does anyone have any idea how to accomplish this on Android?I have a little experience in writing basic apps for Android, but not much with SSH, any help is appreciated.
/Update
Tried ConnectBot, but the server replies "You may only connect without a pseudo-tty!" at login attempt. I have no idea what "pseudo-tty" is, and I have looked in the settings of ConnectBot, there is no mention of this.
/Update2
Searched for any further info about the pseudo-tty-less function, in connection with OpenSSH. No luck so far, only a definition of the -T parameter which has no equivalent in ConnectBot.

I am playing around a bit with peer-to-peer communication with android devices.I have written a basic program that creates a listening ServerSocket on each phone using the application. Using the application you can also connect to other devices that is listening, by connecting to the remote ServerSocket. Nothing strange about that.My problem is that it seems that the listening port is not open for connection on different devices. I can connect to my HTC Desire, works like a charm. But connecting to a HTC Hero I get timeout, same if I try to connect to the emulator. But connection FROM the emulator to the Desire and FROM the Hero to the Desire works like a charm. Whats up with this? No security apps is installed and both devices(and the emulator) is running 2.1.

In my application I must use the internet connection ,so I check it first before I open an URL connection using this :-
public boolean IsConnectedToNetwork(ConnectivityManager conManager) { NetworkInfo allNetworkInfo = conManager.getActiveNetworkInfo(); NetworkInfo currNetworkInfo; boolean anythingConnected = false; for (int i = 0; i < allNetworkInfo.length; i++) { currNetworkInfo = allNetworkInfo[i];
if (currNetworkInfo.getState() == NetworkInfo.State.CONNECTED) { anythingConnected=true; }
}
return anythingConnected; }
However this code runs well when I connected to either the operator internet Or to a Wi-fi network. But when I'm connected to the operator but without credit and no internet the mobile also sees it as there's internet,or even connected to a Wi-fi network but without internet gateway it also sees as if it's connected to the internet.

I am a newbie to Android so please excuse me if this is a silly question or one that has been answered many times before. When connecting to and using the Internet, I am trying to find out what determines the connection that the phone will use when more than one connection is available: Wifi, 3G etc. Is there a standard priority order for connection and use? can the user set the priority order? Usually I would expect the wifi connection to be preferred for reasons of speed and cost. I have looked at my phone user guide and the official Android user guide but cannot find any information about this.

I recently moved to an area that has limited internet choices which in turn makes for higher internet prices and longer contracts. A friend suggested a droid and tethering it using pdanet to my Mac. I use my internet primarily for browsing, sometimes I'd like to watch hulu or small pdf files through e-mail. Would this be a good option to consider or should I go with an internet connection? If I choose a droid, which one is the best one for tethering? I'm somewhat drawn to the ones with touch screens and no keyboards....but will listen to your reviews.
Supposedly verizon has a bandwidth limit of 5gb. Anyone know if that is monthly? How much is 5gb? Am I going to find myself a month out hating that I made the choice to rely on a droid for my primary internet source? Is there anything else I need to know about tethering a droid to my mac? Are there restrictions for OS X? Is there anything else I should know so I don't get the phone and hate myself later?

i have this android application that requires to load data from a remote server via the internet. this update-functionaliy obviously requires the device to not only be connected to some kind of network, but also to the internet.so: is want to schedule the update-service to some date and when it starts, it should determine whether it actually CAN reach the target server or not. therefore, a simple "is the device connected to wifi?" does not suffice, as the device may be connected to a wireless network that does not offer internet access. something like a PING is required.whats the easiest / best way to determine, if there is an internet connection is available i.e. server is reachable?

My app needs to send some data to a server when the device is connected. I have been reading about native Android Broadcast actions. I was willing to find a way to use one as gmail does when the device connects to the Internet. (The "loading" icon on the top while it syncs mails) Is it ACTION_SYNC what I am looking for? If not, how does gmail knows when the device connects to internet?
