I need to access the shared preference in a background service instead of activity on phone boot up.But getSharedPreferences function is define in the activity, so how can i access the data without creating the activity?

When you establish a shared preference such as below.
public static final String PREFS_HI = "MyPrefsFile";
Can you access it from other activities just like you would normally do?
SharedPreferences settings = getSharedPreferences(PREFS_HI, 0);
Or is there something unique that you must do to access the preferences?
I am using a PreferenceActivity to show some settings for my application.I am inflating the settings via a xml file so that my onCreate (and complete class methods).These preferences will automatically save to SharedPreferences as the user interacts with them. To retrieve an instance of SharedPreferences that the preference hierarchy in this activity will use, call getDefaultSharedPreferences(android.content.Context) with a context in the same package as this activity.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've written an app with 3 tabs. Each tab has the same list view with different data sources. I have setup SharedPreferences in the tabhost activity, but I put my onSharedPreferenceChangeListener method in my listactivity. When I change a preference, my listener gets called and it updates my database. This is all working. However, if I change the data in tab 1, it calls my listener once. If I change the data for tab 2 it calls it twice and if I change the data in tab 3 it calls it three times. Any idea why it works this way? I guess I could setup my shared prefs in my listactivity and that might avoid the issue, but I'm curious why my listener is called multiple times if it's in a different tab.

So I created a static method in an Activity which I only use to get the shared preferences. This is giving me some problems, since apparently it is not possible to call the method "getSharedPreferences" from a static method. Here's the message eclipse is giving me:
Cannot make a static reference to the non-static method
getSharedPreferences(String, int) from the type ContextWrapper
I tried to work around this by using an Activity instance, like this:
public static SharedPreferences getSharedPreferences () {
Activity act = new Activity();
return act.getSharedPreferences("FILE", 0);
}
This code gives a null point exception. Is there a work-around? Am I going into an android-code-smell by trying to do this?
I have some shared preferences (user_id, email) that I want to access from services and classes that are not subclassed from Activity. I have been trying to implement this today and keep hitting roadblocks. In particular, when I try to access getSharedPreferences, I get a null pointer exception. My code is posted below. My goal here is to allow read access the shared preferences to objects and (potentially) services that aren't going to be directly exposed to the user.

Is there any way to set either a folder on my Dinc as a shared drive or see a shared folder from my Dinc.A lot of times I like to transfer videos or pictures from my Dinc to my laptop or move an apk from my laptop to my SD card and I hate having to dig out a cable to make the transfer. would be nice if I could move files just through wifi. I'm not really digging Dropbox either. Don't like to have my personal files floating around on another server.

I found in the source code of Settings this intent in a file called testing_settings.xml,But I don't know how to use it. I would guess from the fact that Any Cut has a list of activities, that a list of said activities exists somewhere, and therefore an easy way to access them exists, but I haven't found it.

(You can see it in DroidIn app) I'm having some problems with it that I think have to do with redrawing the screen after updates. Here are the symptoms: 1. OnPreferenceChangeListener#onPreferenceChange if I change summary of the preference by doing Preference#setSummary the new value is painted over the old one creating unsightly effect 2. My preferences screen is large enough that user has to scroll. While scrolling, the whole screen get all messed up, again it looks like view is redrawn (when scrolled) without erasing the background first.

The below doesn't occur in the root screen, only once clicking to a child PreferenceScreen. Once in that PreferenceScreen, even before selecting an EditPreference, if I change orientation (i.e. flick the G1 keyboard out) I get an error: 01-30 09:33:54.080: ERROR/WindowManager(1261): android.view.WindowLeaked: that was originally added here.I have previously overcome this in other activities by utilising the onPause etc methods with custom dialogs I use. I have a problem in the Preferences Activity, in the main preferences the theme shows ok, but if I get to a sub preference, the theme gets messy, it is not white as it should, it is all dark, and the font is black so you can't see much, and when I start clicking on any items they will get sometimes white as they should but revert to black soon after. This is only happens on 2.1, in both the real device and emulator. Tested on the emulator running 1.6 and it was working correctly.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI think I've missed something in how Android is supposed to work! I have the main Activity with a menu option that opens the preferences screen. What I need is a way for any changes that were made to be communicated back to the main Activity as soon as the preference is activated. At the moment the only way I could get it working is by using the intent data that gets sent back when the prefs activity closes but this isn't really enough. The reason why it needs to be instantaneous is that one of the preferences is a 'Clear cache' button, so I would like the data to be deleted when the user requests it and no later!

View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a way how I can tell the Preference Activity that value should be saved as integer? So far my all values are saved as strings... I can limit input to integers via XML easy:
<EditTextPreference android:key="SomeKey" android:numeric="integer" />
but it is still saved as string and later trying to getInt("SomeKey") on preferences object I always get java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.String.
Is there a way that EditTextPreference value would be saved not as string? Or maybe I should use some other type of Preference for numeric input?
I encounter a problem with a ProgressDialog in a PreferencesActivity in my application.What I want to do is pop up a ProgressDialog after the user has changed his username or password during the check on the remote server. I know that Android provides some useful methods to be overridden in order to define a menu:

I would like to have this menu shared by each Activity and ListActivity of my Android application. This is for having a standard menu in each (List) Activity that lets the user jump to every part of the application within a click.
Right now, the easiest way to achieve this is to copy-and-paste both methods in every (List) Activity of the application. I don't like this redundancy of code written.
Is sub-classing a reasonable choice? I've already seen that sub-classing one of my ListActivity does not work very well (threads that retrieve objects from a database are giving problems). Are there other ways to share a menu though Activities?

I've a Preference Activity which works perfectly the first time i launch it.But if i close it ( with the back button ) and then i re open it ( through a menu click in the main activity ) then i get a black screen. There is no preferences at all.I can't figure it out why it should not working.It seems all the code is being called normally as the working one but no preferences are showing on the screen.
