Android :: Preference Change Notifying Main Activity
Nov 13, 2009
I think I've missed something in how Android is supposed to work! I have the main Activity with a menu option that opens the preferences screen. What I need is a way for any changes that were made to be communicated back to the main Activity as soon as the preference is activated. At the moment the only way I could get it working is by using the intent data that gets sent back when the prefs activity closes but this isn't really enough. The reason why it needs to be instantaneous is that one of the preferences is a 'Clear cache' button, so I would like the data to be deleted when the user requests it and no later!

The recent apps display seems to function quite differently from earlier versions on 2.2. Try the following for instance: 1) Open an app 2) Click on something that takes you to another activity in the same app 3) Press the home button 4) Press and hold the home button to get the recent list of apps - select the app you chose in step 1 5) You'll be taken to whatever activity in that app is specified as the main/launcher Activity, rather than the Activity on top of the stack (as it was previously) It makes it appear to the user that the application has exited when the home screen button was pressed. I don't have my app set to clear history on launch or anything like that, and I can replicate it on the emulator and with any app on my device (Contacts, Gmail, Engadget etc) Anyone else notice this? Anyone know any reason for the changes? I must admit I quite dislike the new method.

I just tried a stupid approach and it crashed my app... Basically I have an activity that has three tabs (containing three activities). Each of the tabs gets its input from an xml file downloaded off the net. Everything is fine but when I start my app, it has download the xml file and there's a "wait" time for this.I managed to get around this by adding a splash screen. It looks beautiful but the problem is when I click on the second tab, it still has to get the list off the net, so it looks ugly now... It waits before displaying the list. So what I did was design an AsyncTask that just downloads the xml file. In my main activity, I spawn two tasks initially and send the URL and Intent as parameters. And inside the activities that start inside the tabs, I use a wait(). Inside the AsyncTask, after it is done with the download, I notify the Intent using notify(). This crashed! Of course, I didn't expect it to work but just wanted to try :) Writing it so that I can either get a feedback as to why this failed or to prevent others from wasting their time on this...Now, I am sure many face the problem of a "wait" time inside the tabs. How do I solve this? I am thinking of either dimming the screen and then displaying a series of toasts or display a progress indicator inside the tabs or pre-fetching the xml files... I don't have a clue on how these can be achieved.

Im writing a program that offers a quick reply dialog upon receipt of an SMS.
However, I am getting an unexpected result. When I receieve an SMS, the appropriate dialog activity comes up displaying the correct phone number and message, however there is a second activity behind it that is the 'default' activity in my program (it is what opens when i launch my application)
I do not want this second activity to come up. The quick reply activity should come up by itself over top of whatever the user was doing before.
The 'floating' activity:
CODE:.........
The call to the activity inside an onReceive()
CODE:..............
The Manifest:

I'm writing an application that starts with a loading activity. In the loading activity the app requests html from web and parses the html, then it sends the parsing result to the main activity. The main activity has several tabs, and contents of these tabs are based on the result of parsing. For example, the result of parsing is a list of strings ["apple", "banana", "orange"], and I need to pass this list to main activity, so that the main activity can create three tabs named after three fruits.I would like to know if there is any way to pass a list of strings among activities, BTW, is it the common way of do this?

I created an application which enables the user to set whether he wants to receive notification while the application runs in background mode. If the notifications are enabled an activity should be started (the dialog should appear on the screen).
I tried to enabled it the following way:
CODE:...........
This is the method from main activity. When onPause() is executed isRunningInBackground is set true.
When I tried to debug it when the main application was running in the background the line
startActivity(intent) had no effect (the activity didn't appear).
Does anyone know how to midify the logic in order to start an activity from the main activity when the main activity is running in the background (after onPause() is called)?

Need an example of how to create/start a new activity from the main activity. I have a button click event on the main layout. Originally I just used setContentView(R.layout.secondactivity); which brings up the layout but I don't think that is correct since the secondactivity class is not instantiated at this point yet. I have looked for such an example and can not find one.

I hav an app that is like a relational database. There is a main app activity that users manage things with. There is also a widget that will display important info and add data to the database. When the widget is clicked, a configure class displays a way for the user to edit data. When the configure activity is done, the widget is updated and instead of going back to the home screen, the apps main activity is started. I can't find where the main activity is being called from. Wouldn't I have to create an intent and start Activity() to get this behavior? When done updating, I want the home screen and not my app.

I have pretty unassuming preferences screen based on Preference Activity. (You can see it in DroidIn app) I'm having some problems with it that I think have to do with redrawing the screen after updates. Here are the symptoms: 1. OnPreferenceChangeListener#onPreferenceChange if I change summary of the preference by doing Preference#setSummary the new value is painted over the old one creating unsightly effect 2. My preferences screen is large enough that user has to scroll. While scrolling, the whole screen get all messed up, again it looks like view is redrawn (when scrolled) without erasing the background first.

I've created a set of preference screens building on the tuts on androidguys. My preference XML contains nested PreferenceScreens. The below doesn't occur in the root screen, only once clicking to a child PreferenceScreen. Once in that PreferenceScreen, even before selecting an EditPreference, if I change orientation (i.e. flick the G1 keyboard out) I get an error: 01-30 09:33:54.080: ERROR/WindowManager(1261): android.view.WindowLeaked: that was originally added here.I have previously overcome this in other activities by utilising the onPause etc methods with custom dialogs I use. How can I prevent this in the PreferenceActivity? What am I missing?

Is it possible to use the PreferenceActivity and PreferenceScreen to manage multiple instances of preferences fro a single app? It seems that they store preferences as "default" preferences only. I would like to use a PreferenceScreen as my configure activity for an AppWidget, but I need to be able to store distinct preferences for each widget.

I have a problem in the Preferences Activity, in the main preferences the theme shows ok, but if I get to a sub preference, the theme gets messy, it is not white as it should, it is all dark, and the font is black so you can't see much, and when I start clicking on any items they will get sometimes white as they should but revert to black soon after. This is only happens on 2.1, in both the real device and emulator. Tested on the emulator running 1.6 and it was working correctly.

Is there a way how I can tell the Preference Activity that value should be saved as integer? So far my all values are saved as strings... I can limit input to integers via XML easy:
<EditTextPreference android:key="SomeKey" android:numeric="integer" />
but it is still saved as string and later trying to getInt("SomeKey") on preferences object I always get java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.String.
Is there a way that EditTextPreference value would be saved not as string? Or maybe I should use some other type of Preference for numeric input?

I have an Android Service. When a phone boots up, a broadcast receiver receives a notification and it schedules the service to run repeatedly at a gap of X minutes. Henceforth After every X minutes another broadcast receiver gets those notifications and kicks the service off, which does it's job and quits. So far so good. Now I want those X minutes to be configurable. I have a perf.xml similar to what is given at the link below. This XML captures all my preferences along with that of service timer. http://android-journey.blogspot.com/2010/01/for-almost-any-application-we-need-to.html Now when user changes preferences; how can I reschedule the alarm? Is there a way I can set a listener on preferences change? I have used only XML files to speficy preferences screen. Code...

I've written an app with 3 tabs. Each tab has the same list view with different data sources. I have setup SharedPreferences in the tabhost activity, but I put my onSharedPreferenceChangeListener method in my listactivity. When I change a preference, my listener gets called and it updates my database. This is all working. However, if I change the data in tab 1, it calls my listener once. If I change the data for tab 2 it calls it twice and if I change the data in tab 3 it calls it three times. Any idea why it works this way? I guess I could setup my shared prefs in my listactivity and that might avoid the issue, but I'm curious why my listener is called multiple times if it's in a different tab.
