Android :: How To Have Shared Menu In Each (List) Activity Without Re-writing The Overridden Methods

I know that Android provides some useful methods to be overridden in order to define a menu:

I would like to have this menu shared by each Activity and ListActivity of my Android application. This is for having a standard menu in each (List) Activity that lets the user jump to every part of the application within a click.
Right now, the easiest way to achieve this is to copy-and-paste both methods in every (List) Activity of the application. I don't like this redundancy of code written.
Is sub-classing a reasonable choice? I've already seen that sub-classing one of my ListActivity does not work very well (threads that retrieve objects from a database are giving problems). Are there other ways to share a menu though Activities?

I have some information stored as SharedPreferences. I need to access that information from outsite an Activity (in from a domain model class). So I created a static method in an Activity which I only use to get the shared preferences. This is giving me some problems, since apparently it is not possible to call the method "getSharedPreferences" from a static method. Here's the message eclipse is giving me:
Cannot make a static reference to the non-static method
getSharedPreferences(String, int) from the type ContextWrapper
I tried to work around this by using an Activity instance, like this:
public static SharedPreferences getSharedPreferences () {
Activity act = new Activity();
return act.getSharedPreferences("FILE", 0);
}
This code gives a null point exception. Is there a work-around? Am I going into an android-code-smell by trying to do this?

I have list activity with custom array adapter and I can't to get context menu when make long press on list item.

Can we set Title for a Menu Item in Android if it has an icon from drawable? I have a icon for a Menu Item and if I set the icon then the title that is set for that Menu item is not visible. Is this possible or not?

I'm trying to display a list of all the Input Methods that are currently installed on the phone.Does anybody know how to accomplish this? I don't care how I have to do it, I just need to be able to produce a list of Input Methods as they appear in the phone's Language and Keyboards menu and then store the user's selection. I thought maybe I could just use the InputMethodManager to launch the standard Input Method selection menu and then see which one the user picked by looking at which IME is currently selected after the menu closes, but as far as I can tell there's no way to see which IME is currently selected in the system.

I have two applications A and B (in different packages,but it doesn't matter).Application B is an sms application that i have made and contains one activity.This activity has a method called sendSMS(String number,String text).I want to call this method from application A and send an SMS without opening the activity(the GUI) of application B but just send an SMS in the background by calling just the method of the activity.Any ideas?

I'm binding to a local Service (that is, not using IPC and AIDL) from several activities. I want to ensure that I'm not holding references to this service from activities that the user isn't using. My options are: 1.) to bind to the service in onCreate() and unbind in onDestroy(). 2.) bind in onStart() and unbind in onStop(). 3.) bind in onResume() and unbind in `onPause(). Or some combination of these. Which is the best-practice way of binding and unbinding to a local service? Do I not need to be concerned with holding local connections from stopped activities? Additionally, once bound to this particular service I am retrieving a Cursor which is attached to my ListActivity via a CursorAdapter. The data retrieved by the Cursor may have changed while the Activity was out of view so I want to requery it when the Activity is shown again. If I bind in onCreate() I can requery in onRestart(). If I bind in onResume() each time the data will be fresh because I'll query it in the Service's connected callback.

I have a click listener:

When you establish a shared preference such as below.
public static final String PREFS_HI = "MyPrefsFile";
Can you access it from other activities just like you would normally do?
SharedPreferences settings = getSharedPreferences(PREFS_HI, 0);
Or is there something unique that you must do to access the preferences?

Are any <uses-permission> clauses needed in the manifest for: 1. Writing to a file using the Activity.openFileOutput() mechanism; 2. Writing to the SD card using FileOutputStreams; 3. Sending email using the Activity.startActivity( Intent.create Chooser (...)) mechanism
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/security/security.html and didn't see anything that seemed relevant. My app works on my ADP1 without any <uses-permission> clauses when installed with "adb install xyz.apk" but I was worried that it may have problems on a "real" consumer device.

I am on my first Android application and I am on a timeline so details and examples will be useful since my knowledge is still minimal. I want my first screen to present the user with a list of activities to choose from. In my situation it is a recipe app where the user first chooses the type of food, such as, Beef, Chicken, or Pork. I want the application to launch an activity depending on the list item that the user clicked on. When views with different type have same id and screen orientation changes,
either java.lang.ClassCastException: android.view.AbsSavedState$1 or java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Wrong state class -- expecting View State will occur. (depends on the view's order)
Because View.dispatchRestoreInstanceState() checks id only.
You may wonder why anyone would make views with different type to have same id.
But it can happen when you use tab activity.
Imagine you have tab activity with two children activity.
Tab1 is ListActivity and Tab2 is ExpandableListActivity.
Both activity have id of "@android:id/list" but the type of view is different.
This means we cannot use ListActivity & ExpandableListActivit at the same in one tab activity.

I currently have a tab layout with 2 tabs, one tab with a list view and one with the option make strings so I can add them in the list view. Both tabs have their own activity because this made the code much more structured, and I dont have to repeat my self later.
Lets say im in the tab that offer me to create an string, and i press the update list button, how do I update the list view without startActivity()? If i use startActivity(), it starts List.java, and instead of displaying the list in the list view tab, it takes full screen, which defies the purpose of the tab view. In other words, the startActivity() steals the focus from the tab view of the list, and sends it fulscreen.
I want to update the activity in my list view tab, without starting a new activity that goes to fullscreen, and doesnt update the one in the tab.

I am using a PreferenceActivity to show some settings for my application.I am inflating the settings via a xml file so that my onCreate (and complete class methods).These preferences will automatically save to SharedPreferences as the user interacts with them. To retrieve an instance of SharedPreferences that the preference hierarchy in this activity will use, call getDefaultSharedPreferences(android.content.Context) with a context in the same package as this activity.

We are developing an election monitoring application that relies on the SMS network to submit reports from independent election observers in the field. The application poses questions to the user, who answers them sequentially, and an SMS is sent each time a question is answered. We currently have around 120 questions (and therefore 120 SMS messages) that need to be sent in a fairly short period of time. However, the limit in the Android source is 100 SMS messages per hour (3600000 milliseconds). How can this limit be overridden, either on a per-application basis or in the Android source?

made a custom list adapter extending the Base adapter. Each item in the list has an imagebutton, 2 textviews and a button. I tried to add the context menu to the list so as to display some options for an item in the list. registerForContextMenu(getListView()); I used a MenuInflater object to inflate the context menu xml file. But on clicking the items in the list nothing shows up or the usual highlighting of the item of list on click isn't shown. Is it that the context menu doesn't work for custom list views? Any help would be much appreciated.

I am using openContextMenu() when someone clicks on an item of a list (not when they long press as usual). The context menu does appear, however, it shows the context menu for the last item that the context menu had appeared. For example, if I long press the item C of the list then the context menu for item C appears, and later if I click on item B, with openContextMenu() the context menu for item C will again appear, not for B that I was expecting. How can I set the current item for which the context menu will appear to be the item of the list the user clicks on? I do have the position from onListItemClick() and I was trying to find a call like setContextMenuItem() or something, but I can't find anything.

This question occured to me while programming a Android application, but it seems to be a general programming question more.
The situation is, I am extending (subclass-ing) an class from a library, and overriding a method. how do I know if I should invoke the method of super-class? and when? (in the beginning of the overridden method or in the end?)
For example, I am overriding the method "public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu)" from class "Activity" in Android platform. And I saw someone write "return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu)" in the end of the method, in an example. But how do I know it should be done this way? and it is correct or not? what's the difference if I begin my method with "super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu)"?
