Android :: 9-patches In - Selector - Drawable For Custom Button Style
Nov 28, 2009
I'm having a bit of a problem with a custom button style. I have the button states (9-patch drawables) set up in a <selector> drawable. The style I'm going for is a button that looks like it gets pushed down, i.e., you can see the front edge of the button until you press it. It works fine for the button itself, but the contents of the Button (or ImageButton) don't move when pressed, even though I have the 9-patch areas set up to move the content area for the depressed button states. It seems like it's keeping the same 9-patch areas no matter which image it's showing.
Here's an animated GIF to help make the problem a little clearer, since I'm awful at explaining things: http://www.crappytools.net/button_problem.gif The button moves when pressed, but the icon inside stays still. I played with the Draw 9-Patch utility, and it shows that the content area in the depressed image should be shifting downwards like intended.

I'm creating my own View class, and defining custom xml attributes with a attrs.xml. As long as I provide each attribute manually, there is no problem, but
code:...................
The android:text is properly set in my instance, but the borderDrawable is not. I guess this has something to do with namespaces, because inside the styles.xml, the name="mypack:borderDrawable" is not handled by the XML parser's namespace facility, because its inside an attribute value. So "mypack" is in no way connected to "http://some.weird.url.com/seems/not/to/ matter" and adding it via xmlns:mypack... to the stylefile would not help, I guess. In the same file, "android:text" is somehow recognized, even though "android" is AFAIK only a ns-defintion for [url], which is also not declared in that file.
So what is the proper way to set a custom attribute in a style?

I am trying to setup a selector drawable in my asset file like this: * 2 different images for 'on'/'off' mode in rest mode (i.e. it does not has focus) * another 2 different images for 'on'/'off' mode in focus mode (i.e. it has the focus). In my case, the rest mode works, but the 'focus' mode does not. Can you please tell me what am I missing in the focus mode? Code...

I'm trying to use a color defined in a stlyle in a selector but it is causing a Resources$NotFoundException.
First I added a new attribute to attr.xml:
CODE:..........
Then I defined that attr value in styles.xml:
CODE:..........
Then I tried to use that attr in my selector definition:
CODE:................
Lastly, the activity uses the ThemeNoTitleBar style theme in the manifest.
I've also tried creating a color in colors.xml and having it use the new attr but that also fails.
I'm obviously missing something but am not sure what to do to fix it. My intent is to create multiple themes and have the selector use the color in the currently selected theme.

I know how to put the icon on each tab, that is no problem. I also ran across this : Stack Overflow thread on pretty much same thing I followed one of the links from that question, and found this Pretty much, it said use a selector defined in the xml, sure, did that. But there is no id associated w/ it so I am not sure how to get the selector function as a drawable so I can use it as the icon for the tabs. Maybe I am going about this the wrong way.. But this is what I have, and obviously missing something.

When using the "selector" to specify different images for buttons for different states, such as pressed, focused etc, do I have to write an xml file for each button? I have about 15-20 buttons in my app, so was wondering if there is a way to write just one xml and refer to parts of it?

I have a listview with a custom item_row.xml. I've defined a selector in this way:
CODE:................
And then put into item_row.xml in this way:
CODE:...................
I want 2 things:
When i move with arrow keys, the item selected changed its background. It's works fine with the actual implementation of selector.
When i press a item, the item changed its background too, but it doesn't work with the actual selector.
I try to set also into the ListView android:listSelector="@drawable/list_selector" but it doesn't work neither.

I just tried this example. I saved that code in res/color/hover.xml but I always get this error message and Eclipse won't compile my project with this xml.
CODE:...............
Error parsing XML: not well-formed (invalid token) hover.xml /MmAndroid/res/color line 8 Android AAPT Problem
The only thing I might not have done is following. I don't know how to do that: compiled resource datatype: Resource pointer to a ColorStateList.

Is it possible to apply a custom background to each Listview item via the list selector?
The default selector specifies @android:color/transparent for the state_focused="false" case, but changing this to some custom drawable doesn't affect items that aren't selected. Romain Guy seems to suggest in this answer that this is possible.
I'm currently achieving the same affect by using a custom background on each view and hiding it when the item is selected/focused/whatever so the selector is shown, but it'd be more elegant to have this all defined in one place.
For reference, this is the selector I'm using to try and get this working:
CODE:...............
And this is how I'm setting the selector:
CODE:.........................

I have an expandable list with a custom adapter. Everything works great but there are two problems.
First whenever a group or child has a custom background color set the orange selector does not show up. If I dont setup a color the selector draws nicely and also the fade away for context menus works.
Second, some of my text inside a list item is linkified. Whenever a link is present the selector does not draw again. It seems that the click event is handled by the internal link view instead of propagating to the list view.

My 1.6 app works fine in both portrait and landscape modes on the default HVGA device. I'm now trying to support it on QVGA devices and am encountering build-time errors I don't understand. In my res/drawable-ldpi directory I have:
startstopin.png startstopout.png and a selector file
startstopbuttonimageselector.xml
which contains:

<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

</selector>
I've 'fixed project properties' and done a 'clean' build, to no avail. The error I get is:
Error: No resource found that matches the given name (at 'drawable' with value '@drawable-ldpi/startstopin').
Error: No resource found that matches the given name (at 'drawable' with value '@drawable-ldpi/startstopout').
I've tried adding a layout file in res/layout-small that explicitly references this selector file, but this triggers a similar build error and fails to address the original problem:
Error: No resource found that matches the given name (at 'src' with value '@drawable-ldpi/startstopbuttonimageselector').

I am getting an error from Eclipse when I use this xml file (res / drawable/btnswitch.xml) to designate different button conditions

<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

 </selector>
I call it in my layout file with this code:
<Button android:id="@+id/startTimer_btn" android:src="@drawable/btnswitch"" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="fill_parent" />
Eclipse says it can't run the configuration because I have errors but does not show any errors. And when I remove the xml code (to go back to my original code which just sets a background image for the Button) it says that now has errors. I have to restart Eclipse to get the original code to run again.

I want to layout a button with Drawable image on the top of it and text below the image. I am very new to this so please use detailed instructions.I have not experimented with drawable images yet so I want to clarify before I continue.If I want to above the text (ie the text is not on the image) how do I go about doing this? I also want the text to be centered in below and (working without the drawable) there is a gravity command for center-horizontal and bottom. This made an error. Appreciate the help and remember I am a beginner to Eclipse and Java.

First, here is my XML for the Button:

And here is the values/styles.xml:
CODE:...........
Its not working at all. If I dont use Style and just add the style directly in the XML for the Button - no problem.

I created button with some shadow using a style:

This applies a white shadow on the button's text in its normal state. I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to remove this shadow when the button is a pressed state. In other words, is there a way to apply another style when the button is in another (pressed) state?

I have a GridView with a BaseAdapter that cycles through the elements making views for each element or cell in the grid.
What I would like to do is create a clickable image/button, and when the user clicks or touches it, for it to remain clicked and highlighted so that they make click on several if they so choose.
I have tried, ImageButtons, Buttons, ImageViews, LayerDrawables(with a swapable background color drawable), ToggleButtons, CheckBoxes, derived my own CompoundButton, but nothing seems to work.
I was a teeny bit successful with a ImageButton where I could create it selected, but if the user clicked on it, I couldn't get that visual state back.

I have a custom drawable, where I draw a base bitmap image, then part of an image over the top of that that is clipped to a certain rectangle. For the overlayed image, I am trying to blur the edges, and I thought I could accomplish that using a BlurMaskFilter, however, I'm not seeing any blurring occurring.
Here is the content of the draw method from my Drawable class.The result is almost correct, except the overlay image is not being blurred.
m_paint = new Paint();
m_blurPaint = new Paint();
m_blurPaint.SetMaskFilter(new BlurMaskFilter(blurRadius, BlurMaskFilter.Blur.Outer));
[code]...
This code is written in C# using Xamarin, so I realize that some things are slightly different, but the overall methods will be the same.

I tried to re-implement what HTC did with the One X, One S, etc, where they have physical back, home, recent apps keys, and a virtual menu button pops up under apps that need a menu button. I don't have an Android device, so I was only able to test it under the emulator, I have only tested it with the Facebook app, but it seems to work fine.
The patch is against AOSP 4.1.1, to activate it in the emulator, set hw.mainKeys=yes and hw.menuButton=no in hardware.ini. For a real device, you'd need to set config_showNavigationBar to false and config_showLegacyMenuButton to true.
Because this is just a proof of concept, it pops up the entire ICS navigation bar with all four buttons instead of just the menu button. But that's not hard to fix.
