Samsung Galaxy I7500 :: Rooting - Custom Roms
Jul 8, 2010
Custom roms/rooting business and I'm looking for a few pointers.
1) do I need to use a computer to root my device?
2) will I be able to use flash and various other features such as installling apps to my sd card that are included in the 2.2 firmware for android, (which Samsung completely abandoned us in updating from. 2.1)?
3) (according to features listed above that I need) which rom is the best?

I've been through a lot of these forums and haven't found my particular problem discussed, so I'm finally posting hoping someone can help... I'm American but I live in Istanbul so the the Galaxy i7500 I've got didn't even come with the Market app and support here is impossible.
I've been able to flash stock and custom ROMs but I can't connect to my carrier (Turkcell) afterward. I can only use WiFi to do things like get access to the market, but then I have to do a restore to use my phone properly.
Currently I'm on:
PDA: I7500JTIH2
PHONE: I7500XEJC6
CSC: I7500TRCIH2
Can anyone explain how to extract the CSC from my phone so I can include when I flash a custom ROM with Odin?

I live in Canada and I have this I7500L Samsung Galaxy (with BELL mobility) I want to upgrade with the newer androids 2.1 or 2.2.
I'm at the beginning of my journey here and still gathering and hunting for information. I've looked around and there are lots of tutorials but none of them answer my noob questions.
Do you need to have your phone unlocked or debranded in order to root?
Will rooting the phone also unlock it?
I've found a place where they guarantee unlocking of this phone but they charge 20$US. If I can root the phone and not having to pay for that it would be great.
So far in my research I've boiled down the overall plan to:
1) Root the phone
2) Pay for drakaz galaxyupdater

I'm trying to root my Samsung Galaxy, currently looking at the AndroidWorld EasyRoot rooting guide, and I'm stuck on the initial stages. I've got the SDK downloaded and I'm trying to get ADB working. This involves installing the driver so that USB debugging works...but I can't find the driver anywhere. I'm running Vista x64 Ultimate.

Is it possible to get more than the stock 3 screens on the Galaxy without rooting? Just recently got the phone and not sure if going down the rooting path yet (at least until I'm comfortable I won't brick it) I'm still on Android 1.5 as I cannot upgrade to 1.6 through Samsung PC studio.

I received my Galaxy today after much waiting around for O2 UK to make it available. I've been perusing both the Galaxy and other Android device forums and it seems that there's a huge amount of difference between how to get custom ringtones / notification sounds working between different phones.
Has anyone got it working on the Galaxy yet? I'd love to replace the standard sounds with Zelda ones.

I have searched here and via Google searches about Rooting and custom ROMs. I still am not quite sure what any of it means. I know rooting allows access to things that you normally cannot do such as removing HTC and Sprint apps. Which I would LOVE to do. I mean, who the hell wants the stock widget anyway?

I have been using the INC for about 2 months now and i really do like the phone. As all of you know, the battery sucks. I picked up the 1500 battery about the same time the 2.2 came out and the battery life dropped over the 2.1/stocker. I thought it may have been the battery so i used the stock 1300 for a while and it was TERRIBLE. To add to the issue, the battery takes longer to charge then it does die. And thats why i am posting this. Could someone give me a list of what i need to do while rooting my phone and installing custom roms? that will speed up charge time? Normally i wont ask for help like this but i have zero time to sit down and read about everything. Just looking for a simple fix to get me by for the next few months.

I'm feeling the itch to go beyond the standard settings in Android and get into rooting. I'm following along with a lot of the developments here, but I often feel like I'm missing a lot of the background knowledge and vocabulary (what is recovery, how does one access it, what are all these different programs - nandroid, adb, etc.) to have a really strong grasp of what's going on here.
Now, if this were my computer, I'd just hop right in and start following along as best I can and mess things up along the way, no biggie, I have multiple computers and I'm competent to fix them.
I don't have a landline though, so I want to be a little more prepared before I accidentally brick my link to the outside world. Is there a good "tinkering with Android primer" out there that any of you would recommend?
Also, how easy is it to get back from whence I came on the Ally? I read the thread on unrooting, and I honestly didn't understand a lot of it, so I'm just looking for a "not gonna happen" or "it'll be easy when you finally understand."

I just wanted to know if there are any benefits of rooting without installing custom roms? Now i've seen many threads here listing many benefits but its not clear whether u get those extra features from the custom roms or just from being rooted. So i was to root my phone and then leave the stock rom on, what extra would i be able to do?

So I am pretty computer savvy but just getting into the phone scene. Wondering what site is best for the hacker side talk of phones?
Androidcommunity vs Androidforums vs XDA dev forums?
Which is better for instructions on rootings and applying custom ROMs?
Which is better for finding ROMs?
Which has more users?
Which has more experts?
Anyone familiar with the other site or one I may not know about can fill me in a bit? I seem to like this site the most but if there is more information elsewhere, I may need to pool my resources. I would prefer for android forums to be my 1 stop shop n go.

I have been messing around with rooting and installing custom roms then going stock messing with settings then going to another to see how I like it. In the past, after I flashed a stock .sbf file I would be prompted for the Froyo OTA update. I just did it again last night. I was wondering, can you flash your phone too many times where you start to cause problems? And, does Verizon keep a check on how many times you've downloaded an update? Or, is it just not popping up because FRG22D is out?

I looked over at the instructions and it says all you data will be wiped. So rooting will likely be the absolute first thing I do. After you root its stated you can flash custom roms. Can someone go more in depth on this? Will Sense not work anymore once the phone is rooted? Any other points of interest that is worth noting?

So after having seen that I could use CyanogenMod 10.1 to get version 4.2.1 onto my Tab, I've gained a particular interest in rooting my p3113. With that said, I still have concerns about security with custom roms;
-How do I make sure I am as secure as possible?
-Is it still safe to purchase with Google Wallet on the Play Store?
-What should I avoid in order to remain safe?
I know the "risks" involved in rooting a device, although following instructions will assure that such issues do not occure. So other than the actual security issues, I need no additional information

Having obtained the bootloader unlock key from Huawei, how does one unlock and root the phone? Will one be able to backup the original firmware that comes bundled with the phone and restore it on a whim, if required? Are there any custom ROMs for this particular model?

Does GAOSP Froyo support live wallpapers for i7500? If yes, can you recommend some that seem to run fine without (major) slowdown? I would suspect that the CPU is too slow to run most live wallpapers, but there might be some neat ones that are good to go?

I'm a newbie at all this, and I've read a lot of posts here but they all say how to root or flash. Pardon my simple question, but I just wanted to know what the difference between rooting and flashing is and at what level (hardware/os etc.) do each of these take effect. Also, which method will directly affect what I see/feel from a user's perspective as opposed to underlying OS changes.

I've been a Galaxy owner since release day on O2 UK and have been following the forums here for a while. I've had all the usual problems (NPS being useless, etc) and found the forum to be invaluable, so thank you.
I wanted to update the firmware, but found there's almost too much information around. Lots of updated / contradictory information, and some of it requiring convoluted hacking of text files etc. I eventually took the plunge, and made notes as I went. Hopefully, this will be of help for other new users.
After reading, I decided there were two stages to this. First, back up the phone so if it all went west I could roll back. Second, get the firmware on it.
Booting in various modes:
With the phone off:
Fastboot mode - call + power
Recovery mode - vol-down + call + power (hold home + back to exit)
Download mode - vol-down + ok + power
To enable root and back up the phone: (update - this method appears to have been blocked as of firmware rev. II5, should still work for IH8 and earlier)
To enable root and back up the phone:
Get recovery image from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8SAFKOIN see [url]
Get recovery flasher from Android Rooting in 1-click (limited time only... until it gets patched)
Copy recovery.img and rectools.tar.gz files to /sdcard
(tar.gz must be the root of /sdcard)
copy the recovery flasher .apk to /sdcard and install it
Run recovery flasher
Choose "backup recovery image" just in case
Enter sdcard/recovery.img as the path
Choose "install custom image"
Boot into recovery mode
Run a nandroid backup
Enable root if desired
Reboot
To flash the firmware:
Get Odin + H7 firmware from MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
Get H8 firmware from RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting and unizp it to give you a .tar file. Alternatively, you can use the latest I5 firmware here, there's links to it elsewhere on the forum - I'm using H8 as an example as this was the latest when I wrote this.
Edit the .tar file with 7-zip to remove cache.img (to remove CSC branding) - 7-zip handles .tar files in a vaguely sensible manner, unlike things like WinRAR. 7-zip can be had from 7-Zip
Boot phone in Download mode
Run Odin
Follow instructions here The Chronicles of Cjeni a.k.a. Dejan Cencelj: Flash ROM Samsung I7500 Galaxy for dummies - essentially you're adding your freshly modified .tar as a one-file update, along with the orion.ops file supplied with Odin. The web page is nice and clear.

I got my galaxy few days ago and Yesterday I got home to my comp. I had an Israeli firmware version which is really annoying.
After reading in this forum and the Italian HD forum I successfully flashed the firmware(to H8 cause you people said the II5 is buggy) and rooted my phone. I want to install the USB drivers but I have a problem: I've already seen the guide that kam made but when i try to install the ADP driver I get this message(after it recognizes its a ADP driver but not recognize galaxy): I think this pictures will explain better than words. What happened when i install the driver: This is how my device manager looks AFTER i installed(unsuccessfully) the driver: this is how the driver looks: I use windows XP if somebody is confused. You can see in the "details" that my phone is VID_04E8&PID_6640&MI_04 So that is not the problem. UPDATE: I managed to solve my problem with this file.
