Samsung Captivate :: Advanced Task Manager And Idle Applications
Oct 3, 2010
I have been using Advanced Task Manager and its been working perfect. I did notice that after I ended the apps later on they would show up again on the list. Some of the the apps that start again have not been run by me in days but just show up on the Tasks List. Why would an app come on if I did not run it?

I've got almost everything streamlined for DE03 but I keep seeing two Apps that always reload in Advanced Task Manager:
com.samsung.internal, and
System Updates
First question, since I'm not using Sprint's version of software, do I *need* either of these?
And, if *not*...what are the names of the files, so I can rip 'em out?

First post, just registered, thought it'd be a great idea since I have the Droid. Have had the Advanced Task Manager and I love it, but it seems as though when I end all tasks(which I usually do to save time from individually picking which ones should be ended), it might mess with my network/system processes. I recently did a factory reset because my GPS wasn't tracking my location well. I tried to just power off the phone and see if my GPS could locate me, but it couldn't. When I first got the phone the GPS would pick me up and track me if I was moving just like that. I was afraid the task manager could have messed something up with my network processes. Any ideas?

I've been using Task Panel X and Advanced Task manager to kill unneeded tasks and keep memory at a maximum.
Recently, every time I open Task Panel X and then revert back to Home screen I get the HTC logo and then a loading screen while the device sets itself. This happens even if I kill NO tasks.
So my solution was to uninstall Task Panel X and then use just Advanced Task Manager. All the sudden, same result.
Everytime I open either of these apps and then go back to home screen I get a BLACK SCREEN WITH HTC LOGO, THEN A BRIEF (10 SECONDS) LOADING SCREEN. THEN ALL IS NORMAL.

Do you know if ATK uses much cpu/memory and battery when running in background, when using the autokill-feature when going to standby because it than needs to refresh the running app-list always.

Anyway, I just wanted for everyone to post their favorite Task Manager/Killer, and why, and if there are any flaws. I personally use Advanced Task Killer Free. It has a simple UI, and the when you select or unselect apps it remebers it so next time you launch the app you can only remove the apps that you usually do, and keep ones that always run. It doesn't slow down or break the system.

If you use the "End All Background Tasks" button (the widget for this app I believe), it ends the weather functionality on the standard clock/weather widget. The weather does not appear to restart without trashing the clock widget and then replacing it. That basically renders the Kill All Background tasks functionality useless does it not? I'm wondering if it's like this for all background task killing apps as well.

I set my screen to use HOME versus Sense UI. Well, I put the ATM widget on my screen for single click app ends...when I do this, though, it kills home.
Anyway I can exclude Home from this. It doesn't appear to be an option in my Apps list when i open Advanced Task Manager
I have YET to receive a single email from androidforums.com when I use "Instant Email Notification" for thread replies.

I am a new android user. I am a new smart phone user. I used to just use a cell phone for calls and texts. Where do I start? What applications do I absolutely need? There are a few applications that are already on the phone that I'll never use (like twitter). I can't seem to get rid of them (do I need to?) What does the kill applications task manager do?

I officially want to know from real life experience, have any of you noticed an improvement in battery life by utilizing the program Advanced Task Killer (ATK). Yes or No.
I've heard arguments for and against using ATK which people have claimed could save battery life by killing off background aps and processes that hinder battery life by using the CPU in the background.
Some people say it works, others say "dude you are an idiot, you must not know anything about Android or linux, Aps don't run in the background with Android, its the beauty of Android" or something to that effect.
Maybe I'm an Idiot, but here is my experience. I have used my phone for periods of time, with and without ATK. I can deffinately say from my own real life experience, that running ATK improves my battery life. Maybe its a mental placebo effect I dont know. For those who say it doesn't work, I just have one common sense question, so here it goes. If Android is so smart, and it doesn't run background aps on it's own, which would use up energy, then why the heck does AmazonMP3 load up by it's self every 2 mins in the background. I never even use the stupid program, so common sense says if Android doesn't run background Aps like AmazonMP3, then how does it mysteriously show up on the list as being used in the background? Also I've read on xda people who root their phone, and manually remove programs like this, and they saw an improvement in battery life, isn't that more proof that indeed these programs use some energy in the background, thus ATK does help?

I received my galaxy s yesterday after returning my HTC desire and I am more than happy with it so far just one thing that has been ruining my joy is that after installing advance task killer and setting it to auto-end running apps every 2 hours (excluding any apps I though were important) I find that when it auto ends it resets all the apps running meaning my screen will blank out and everything reloads a few seconds later...

I have had my Moment for about 2 months now and was wondering about which is the prefered Task Manager?
My friend had the HTC Ares, and he touted TasKiller which I have been using, and I briefly used Advanced Task Killer before I really understood the purpose.
Any recommendations that are Moment specific?

Not sure how long it's been up, but Samsung has released a new version of the task manager. Download it from Samsung apps (from your phone). Changes include a new tab called RAM. You can now clear up your RAM according to two levels. I recommend that you only use Level 1 since level 2 kills some essential apps (like your widgets), meaning that they have to be relaunched again, consuming power and CPU cycles.

I know this was talked about before at different times but I still have 3 questions.
1. what is the difference between a task killer and a task manager?
2. should we be using one of these apps or not?
3. when you look at the awake time if it is like 70% or 80% and you aren't using the phone a bunch I take it that means something is running, how can you find what is running.and is the awake time that big of deal?

Looking for a guide on how to use task killer. I had task killer on and deleted it. I think I was killing tasks that were needed to keep certain functions running that I use frequently. If someone would take the time to help me understand how to use one, I think I would be much more successful with it.
example - text messaging just stopped ( werrent receiving them ) . Once I took task killer off, everything started working again.

I've scoured endlessly on Google looking for the best apps for Vibrant. Then I thought why not ask actual users,
These are MY apps on my vibrant:
WHERE - a restaurant finder. Pretty good, I've had issues with the app pinpointing my location, but could have been a fluke.
YELP - another restaurant finder.
FACEBOOK - no introduction needed. This app really needs an update. Keeps switching me b/w the app and the mobile site. Some of my mail threads on fb stop halfway and I can't see new replies.
MOTRIS - a tetris style game. Kind of good but hard to move the pieces around.
TASK MANAGER - an app killer. Pretty good. Could be a lot better, though.
FANDANGO - an app that helps you find theaters near you. Good.
What do you have?

I see a lot of people recommending the Advanced Task Killer app and I was wondering what benefits there are to be had from installing it? The only widget I have running is the Calendar and all I have on my "home" screen is HTC People, Messages, Gmail, Market, Internet and email. Is this really necessary in my case?
