Motorola Droid X : Create Capacitive Back Button On Screen To Replace Mechanical?
Aug 11, 2010
So I'm new to Android OS and the Droid X. I'm on the $54.99 plan that's just data/text, so I don't pay for any minutes. So I was wondering if it's possible to change out the capacitive phone button on the main screen to something more useful for me, or would I need something a little beefier than root access, like a whole new rom?
Also, would it be possible to create a capacitive back button on the screen to replace the mechanical back button?

I know this has been a problem in terms of responsiveness. This Back capacitive button sometimes needs to be tapped more than once for it to respond. I exchanged the phone once but it's still the same.
Anyone hear any solution to this issue? and does anyone NOT have a problem with this back button?

But sometimes other small parts/and or button commands lock-up. For example; since I am new to Swype, I decided to take the tutorial and each time I would click (or even tried to slide) the next button, it wouldn't respond took about 5-7 tries. While on the phone with tech/and CS yesterday (for whole diff issue), I asked about the Capacitive Button Sensitivity - as mine wasn't working that well either (as others have mentioned). Tech had me remove the battery for 2 full minutes, and put back in - and now the Capacitive Buttons works perfectly.Anyone else having partial screen/certain buttons not responding to commands? I guess I could try removing the battery again, but I am not sure that will fix it.

From the Cnet review, it looks like the unit doesn't come with a screen protector. What kind works good with a capacitive screen? I have a Hero now, but no protector on it. But with the Droid X's monster screen, I will need one.

Maybe I'm missing something but in the WinMo version of Swype theres an option to double a word that came out wrong and choose from a list of alternatives. That function doesn't seem to be included in the android one. I don't have nearly as many mistakes now with a capacitive touch screen as opposed to my old resistive, but I still get one every now and again and its easier to do that than place the cursor, backspace, and re-swype.

This is my first android device and i'm loving it... but one thing that irks me is the use, or lack thereof, of the back button.
As I am navigating menus and options in the Settings, I cannot simply go back one menu using the back key. For example, if I go to Settings->Battery Manager->Battery Profile Options and want to go back to the Settings screen, I cannot.
Pushing the back button does nothing and I can only go back to the Settings menu by going Home, then re-entering.
Another quirk regarding the back button is when reading emails. Using a regular email account such as Hotmail, I cannot simply read an email and go back to the inbox using the button.
It makes navigating the phone very tedious.

I have been searching for an application to replace the need to press the power button up top in order to get the screen activated so that I can start using my phone once the screen powers off. I am hoping there is some kind of application that can do this just by changing the way the phone is held like if its accelerometer changes by a certain number of degrees or something like that.

I have purchased a HTC Legend about 3 weeks ago and am very satisfied with this cell phone. My only concern is related to the reliability of the "mechanical keys" (Home, Menu, Return and Search) . I have interacted a lot with my cell phone and verified that I need to press the Home button many and many times to leave an application in order to go back to the main menu to get access to another application.
I would like to know if there is some application to create an icon in the Notification bar (on the top of the touch screen) in order to return to Home screen. This seems to be an interesting solution because the Notification bar is always active, regardless of the application that is running. In this case, the user could access it through the touch screen and avoid using the mechanical keys all the time, so that the user would not need to worry with the life time of the mechanical keys.

I'm finding that I'm using the back button A LOT whether browsing the web or just navigating the OS. It kind of sucks because the buttons on the droid x are well, really small, and sometimes hard to press because they are so narrow and flimsy feeling. And depending on how you are holding the phone, it could be a good bit of distance for your thumb to travel or I'm finding myself having to reposition the phone in my hands just to reach the back button, which you seem to need very frequently.
Anyone know of any kind of back 'swipe' implementation ? Like some software you can install that makes it if you swipe left to right on maybe the top bar it goes back?

For some reason the four buttons at the bottom aren't as sensitive as the touch screen. When tapping on icons on the touch screen, i can pretty much just use my finger nail, but to get the button on the bottom to consistently respond, I have to push and hold with my entire thumb. Anyone else have this problem? Is there some way to turn up the sensitivity?

I have the original Droid. I take very good care of it, but I needed to have the phone with me while I was at the gym last night and it fell out of my pocket and the screen cracked. It still works but the screen obviously needs to be replaced. I weep quietly every time I take the phone out of my pocket now to use it.
However, I have the Best Buy Geek Squad Blacktie Protection plan on the phone - the one for $10/mo. I am getting conflicting information as to whether they are going to take my phone and replace the glass or if they are just going to supply me with a new phone. I'll know more when I take it in for service.
My issue is this, I am rooted running a custom Froyo 2.2 ROM. Should I unroot and dial back to 2.1 before I return the phone or should I just bring it in? Has anyone had any experience with this one way or the other?

I notice on my eris that when i am on a menu with a black background that if i hit my back (bottom button) a little firmly, right above the button on the lcd kind of changes colors. Like if you press your laptop screen, its only a little bit though. If you could, please try this and report back.

I am working on a device that does not have a hardware Home, Back or Menu button. I am trying to create a soft keyboard with only these three keys but I have not been able to get it working. Does anyone have any insight into my problem?
I first looked into injecting keypresses into a WindowManager but this functionality seems to have been removed.
I then looked at creating a custom soft keyboard but that will not work either. Custom soft keyboards only inject their input into the text fields they are attached to. I can't send a Home, Back or Menu keypress to the Android system.
I finally got the Home button working by using this intent to tell Android to go to the Home screen: Intent HomeIntent = new Intent(); HomeIntent.setAction(Intent.ACTION_MAIN); HomeIntent.addCategory(Intent.CATEGORY_HOME);
Unfortunately, I have not found an Intent to send for Menu and Back.

So my beloved Droid is finally starting to show her age. Part of the touch screen has failed on the very right side of the screen as can be seen here:
The phone is still fully functional other than this and appears to be one of the better units out there (runs perfectly stably with 1.2ghz ulv kernels, gets great battery life and has a bubbly keyboard).
Having this portion of the touch screen go out does cause a few major problems though:
-Search hardware button no longer works
-Can't use notification blind in landscape view
-Can't hit backspace on portrait on-screen keyboard
-Many software buttons (like the ones in maps) can't be used in portrait
I have already visited my local VZW store and was assured they have replacement Droid 1s in stock.

I like buttons, but I also like options. Just wasn't sure if there was an app to incorporate a software based back button in the OS or at the very least within the browser.

My EVO has been answering phone calls in my pocket. I've even "butt dialed" a couple of people when I forgot to turn of the screen before sticking it in the pocket.
If I forget to turn off the screen, that's my fault, but the screen turns itself on when the phone rings.
How the heck is a capacitive screen working through fabric, anyway?

Sometimes with the home or back button not responding at times? Kind of like a freeze where u have to press the buttons a couple of times then they will respond. Also, have you noticed that sometimes that pressing the power button will not wake the phone up? And when my phone call ends, it takes a while for the screen to come back from black so I can end the call. Should I get an exchange for my phone or are these issues supposed to be resolved with the update coming?

I have just got my hero back from RMA with a new screen. (the old one was fubar). But now the back button is bringing me the homescreen. And not the last screen. So if I browse my settings, and go 4 screens in. I want the back button to bring me to screen 3 (like it used to), and not to the home screen.

Would it be possible to create a large "next" button at the bottom of the page? When using the touchscreen, it is difficult to flip to the next page of a thread...I find myself having to zoom in a lot in order to press the little > correctly. I can't keep track of how many times I get routed to Amazon for missing the button.
