Hooking Into Native Camera?

Sep 29, 2011

I need to take pictures with my application, but the only thing I am finding are examples of how to create a camera activity. Is there a way I can call up the phones native camera instead and get the byte[] data back instead of creating a camera activity myself?

I am asking because I would like to take advantage of the normal features like zoom, flash, themes, etc that the user would get if they push the camera button on their phone.

Hooking into native camera?

Android :: Camera Preview Native Setup - Out Of Memory

Jun 17, 2009

After a few weeks on market with my app (Ghosts AR) I found few interesting issues coming from the users who installed the program. On some of the devices my application fails with exception:

java.lang.RuntimeException: Out of memory at android.hardware.Camera.native_setup(Native Method) at android.hardware.Camera.<init>(Camera.java:82) at android.hardware.Camera.open(Camera.java:64)

Strange that I'm personally never got it on my G1 (1.5 firmware).

Android : Pass Camera Data To Native Layer?

Nov 3, 2009

In my application i want to pass the camera data to native layer. what is the best possible approach for doing the same.

I know it can be done 2 ways.

1.start the camera in application and pass the preview data to native layer. But i feel this may consume lot of resources.

2.Start the camera directly in native layer and use it. So JNI will come less into picture. and not much resource loading also. But dont want to take any risk by using the lower layer code which may change in future.

Is there any other approach ? start the camera and tap the data in native layer. I think this wont be proper approach, Can any one suggest ?

General :: Method Hooking - How To Get Other Apps Data

May 15, 2013

I just came across this WhatsApp widget for Root which is able to display recent messages. I was wondering how the developers managed to get the data from WhatsApp.

As of now, I can think of three possible ways:
a) The widget refreshes its contents whenever it detects activity on the WhatsApp message database.
b) The widget "hooks" methods that get called in one of WhatsApps activities when new messages arrive and mirrors the messages into its own database.
c) The widget listens for push messages with the WhatsApp signature or listens for traffic between WhatsApp and their servers.

I use the termin "hooking" because of the way iOS tweaks are written, I have no idea if this is possible on Android. Which way is more likely?

Let me elaborate on the background of my question: I noticed that WhatsApp groups new messages as a single item in the notification window. I'm thinking about selling my iPhone and getting an Android phone, but I would like to have a preview of all incoming messages like iOS's notification center.

I'm not sure same interface is working on android. or, They provide another form of interface to get a notification of a field access.

Motorola Droid :: Disable Auto-mount SD Card When Hooking Up To PC

Jun 10, 2010

I hope this question hasn't been addressed before; I've tried searching google but I may not be searching with the right keywords:

My Droid (running NexFro 1.01 - about to install BB with NexFro in ~20 mins) has been automatically mounting my SD card to my PC since installing Froyo last Saturday. I didn't have this feature enabled before flashing to Froyo, and I've tried a few roms since Saturday and they all have this feature auto-enabled.

This normally wouldn't be an issue, but this week I have been traveling with my job and I have been using tethering quite a bit, and would like to be able to charge my phone from my laptop without mounting my SD card every time.

Is there a way to disable this feature? Also I'm not sure that it is a feature at this point, as I haven't seen any other forum posts about this one any of the Android forums and I can't be the only person who doesn't want this feature enabled by default.

Motorola Droid X :: Camera VS HTC Incredible Camera

Jul 17, 2010

So I spent the last hour or more in my backyard in 107 degrees taking pictures of flowers at stock settings with both phones. NOT an easy task I will tell you that. My back hurts, but besides that... I did my best to show the best quality of BOTH cameras, because they are both great. I realize that not everyone will agree with me, or will think I messed with something in my pictures. But these are all completely stock settings, not messed with at all. I only touched the flash on/off button.

My decision is I like the X camera better, it is easier to focus, and much snappier. Plus designated camera button! I found on the Incredible while the pictures look great on the phone itself and in gallery, that as soon as they were uploaded the colours looked washed out and not as great. I know this is due to the AMOLED screen. But both overall great. My decision is the X though.

X FLASH:

INC FLASH:

NOTE: Inc would NOT focus any closer without being extremely blurry, tried a gazillion times.

X NO FLASH:

INC NO FLASH:

HTC EVO 4G :: Native Call Recording ?

Jul 31, 2010

I've seen a lot of remarks about good call recorder apps for the EVO 4G. None of them are really that good or reliable.

To take advantage of native call recording on the EVO 4G, all you need to do is set the phone call to speaker after connected and then start the Voice Recorder app that comes with the phone. It records both sides of the conversation very clearly and you can adjust the speaker volume to about 75% for optimum audio capturing.

In the state of Texas, it is legal to record any conversation without informing the other party that you are doing so. Be sure to check with your state before recording any phone calls covertly.

AIR Packaging APK With Native Libs?

Nov 1, 2011

My team is currently trying to package a native .so library within an AIR APK. This native library is used by a native extension we've built, but the library is not the extension itself, therefore the standard process of creating an AIR APK with an extension does not include these libraries. We have to, somehow, instruct AIR to include the native libs in the packaging process.

The real headache is that for Android to link to these libraries, it appears that they must sit in the following directories (we have 2 .so files):

/lib
/armeabi
mynativelib.so
/armeabi-v7a
mynativelib.so

When using ADT we can include the /lib directory in the APK, but AIR sticks the /lib directory in the APK's /assets directory with the rest of the AIR files....but this does not work because Android does not appear to find the native libs.

how we can get this lib directory sitting at the root of the APK?
