HTC Incredible :: Installing First Custom ROM?
Oct 22, 2010
After a few weeks of being rooted, getting rid of bloatware, etc., I decided to give Virtuous 3.1 a try, and downloaded it to my SD card using ROM Manager. I backed up all data in apps that had their own backup utilities and made a Titanium backup and then a nandroid in clockworkmod. After reading a number of threads, I figured ROM Manager should be OK for installing Virtuous, so I selected "install from SD", navigated to the correct file, and checked the backup and wipe options (I already had a nandroid, but figured another backup couldn't hurt). Anyway, for about 10 minutes, all I saw was a mildly disgruntled-looking android figure and a triangle with an exclamation point, which from my reading isn't what is supposed to happen.
I finally pressed the power button and it went into ClockworkMod Recovery with the following message (below the menu):
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.5
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to seek in /cache/update.zip (Invalid argument)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I used ClockworkMod Recovery to reboot, and everything seems normal, no data lost or anything - but what did I do wrong?

I have been using the INC for about 2 months now and i really do like the phone. As all of you know, the battery sucks. I picked up the 1500 battery about the same time the 2.2 came out and the battery life dropped over the 2.1/stocker. I thought it may have been the battery so i used the stock 1300 for a while and it was TERRIBLE. To add to the issue, the battery takes longer to charge then it does die. And thats why i am posting this. Could someone give me a list of what i need to do while rooting my phone and installing custom roms? that will speed up charge time? Normally i wont ask for help like this but i have zero time to sit down and read about everything. Just looking for a simple fix to get me by for the next few months.

Theres not much I'm missing from stock android but wi-fi tethering would be really nice. Plus I would like to still be able to receive OTA updates that google offers. Can you root the phone and keep the stock ROM? If yes will the stock ROM still update? Is there a wi-fi tether app that doesn't require something like Cyanogen?

I've read through the step-by-step here, and while I've found it to be the clearest set of instructions I've encountered, I still have a couple points of confusion. It sounds like by the time I get to the end of Section 2 (version 1) I will have a custom ROM installed (2Q). Now I've used Titanium Backup (I used the pre-OTA Unrevoked for su) to back up apps/data/settings. But I'm not sure what that gets me. What if I want to revert the phone to exactly how it is now? A Titanium Restore would restore apps/data/settings into the custom ROM loaded in 2Q correct?
It appears my answer is in Section 3, item 3D (NAND backup). But at what point do I do Section 3? If I've already gone through Section 2, my current ROM is overwritten by the custom ROM loaded in 2Q, so it's too late to back it up, right? Perhaps I'm making this more difficult than it needs to be, and I'm usually not a complete idiot about technology! But I'm having trouble getting my arms around some of these concepts. I see a lot of instructions saying "do this, do this, do this", but very little explanation what's actually happening when I do these things, and why I'm doing them, so I'm failing to grasp how the various pieces and actions are fitting together.

yesterday i rooted my desire but i have no interest in installing a custom rom. all i want to install is apps2sd or apps2sd +i have read many guides but most of them conflict each other.if i was to follow these steps what would be wiped from the phone.
Using the optical trackpad select Wipe > Wipe data/factory reset
After this has completed do Wipe > Wipe cache
Again, once this has completed do Wipe > Wipe Dalvik-cache.
I understand that the sd card gets wiped and that is not a problem, i'm more worried what gets wiped from the phone memory (not worried about installed apps) also can i do the ext3/4 from the phone as i only have windows 7.

I am new at rooting and installing custom ROMS at android.
I tried to root my android mobile (Qmobile A-900, which is a rebranded version of Gionee Elife E3 Specs and Data sheet) from here and was sucessful.
I installed "MTK mobileuncle" app from google play store which would reboot phone to CWM Recovery when i select "recovery update" option.
Next i tried to install a custom Rom and followed each and every step mentioned here "For CWM Recovery i follwed steps mentioned here"
I made by current stock ROM backup file into SD saved in path SDCARDclockworkmodackup Then in CWM recovery mode i selected Format data/factory reset , then Install from ZIP, Select the Downloaded Zip (selected the custom ROM zip which was 383 Mb, the screen then installed and i recieved "sucessfully installed message while in cwm which then said that i should Reboot my phone which i did.
But now i just get my old Stock Rom welcome logo when i boot my phone for 3 sec and then it restarts and the same thing happens again and again.
"I know its not bricked coz it still displays stock rom logo and starts for a while."

I'm following the directions here for trying to install a custom rom. Following that, when I frag the recovery.img to cwmr 6015.bat, it then brings up the dos window asking which model it is.
Quote:
Windows cannot find 'C:Documents'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To seach for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
I've tried moving the files I'm supposed to use for this to different areas without luck. I tried searching but couldn't find anything.

I just wanted to know if there are any benefits of rooting without installing custom roms? Now i've seen many threads here listing many benefits but its not clear whether u get those extra features from the custom roms or just from being rooted. So i was to root my phone and then leave the stock rom on, what extra would i be able to do?

[ROM] 2.1 ESE53 - DesireRemix v0.1 - Overclocked Kernel
But I cannot find nandroid back up like I have on my phone when I boot in to recovery mode? I want to make a backup just in case, Plus On that site it says
"Install by copying the BDS-20100308-1659 to your SD cards Nandroid folder"
So I guess I need the nandroid folder.

I have been messing around with rooting and installing custom roms then going stock messing with settings then going to another to see how I like it. In the past, after I flashed a stock .sbf file I would be prompted for the Froyo OTA update. I just did it again last night. I was wondering, can you flash your phone too many times where you start to cause problems? And, does Verizon keep a check on how many times you've downloaded an update? Or, is it just not popping up because FRG22D is out?

I've followed instructions on htcdev.com to unlock my Sensation XL and everything worked fine.
Afterwards I tried to install the ICS custom ROM which I downloaded from this site.
The installation seemed to be successful, but when my phone wanted to reboot, it got stuck on the "HTC" logo.
I also tried another custom ROM and had the same problem.

So my question is , should i go for it and unlock the bootloader ? because im still stuck with ICS while cyangenmod has Jelly bean for my phone ..
or should i keep the warranty and wait because something might happen to it ? ( still no word from sony on the update to its 7 months old phone ... )

I want to install Cyanogenmod and root my Nexus 7 2013, but I don't know what I should do to backup.
I previously tried to root and install CM on my Motorola Atrix HD on AT&T and successfully rooted it, unlocked the bootloader, and installed Clockwork Mod. I made sure to click backup and proceeded to delete the version of Android on the device and install Cyanogenmod. Cyanogenmod did not successfully install and I wanted to restore my device back to it the backup I made. It said that it did it successfully, but the device gets stuck on the AT&T logo when booting up and doesn't go past that.
I don't want to have to go through the same trouble with my Nexus 7 not being able to restore back to a backup in case something goes wrong. I'm using the Nexus Root Toolkit on my PC and will probably use the Cyanogenmod installer for installing CM11 (if there are any drawbacks to using the installer). What should I use to backup my device and how would I restore it back to stock if something goes wrong? And if I have a bricked device, how can I flash it back to stock?

I've been reading up on rooting/overclocking and the like, and I've made the decision I want to try to overclock. It just seems like it's not running as good as it should be for a phone of its caliber. Killing apps seems to be the only way to improve the speed of the phone, and I think it's unnecessary to have to kill apps every time I do something on my phone. Some people have said that uninstalling app killers and not worrying about running apps has made their phone faster, and I tried that but it was running even more sluggishly than before. So if I overclock to 800-1000 and not kill apps, would I see a noticeable increase in performance? I usually run either PandaHome or just stock Home, and I may install something like BB if I get tired of home replacements, but I don't want to install a ROM at the moment, only if it's necessary.
And I have a few questions before I get started:
I've read a couple threads about rooting/overclocking, and none of them seem to say if it's possible to just get a kernal and overclocking abilities without installing a ROM and wiping the SD card, so is it possible to ONLY get overclocking abilities without installing a custom ROM and wiping the SD card?

I am very new to custom ROMs. I have just installed a custom ROM from Clockworkmod for my LG e970 4.0.4
After installing whenever I try to open Google Play Store it displays the message "unfortunately, google play store has stopped"
So I searched and tried deleting cache, deleting data for Play Storeand rebooting the phone. But those haven't worked for me.
I am thinking of Restoring the backup I took using CWM prior to the custom ROM.
