HTC Hero :: Gapless Playback / Music Player Apps To Do This?
Nov 28, 2009
I've been taking my hero to the gym and I've been annoyed by the lack of sapless playback. I have workout CDs that go from track to track but there's always the jarring pause in between.
Are there any other music player apps that will do this?

Okay I've spent a lot of time searching forums, googling, and all that, but as far as I know, there is not a single player that supports gapless playback for mp3 files. I have found an app that can play lossless audio: andLess, but it crashes all the time on my Droid X. I haven't rooted yet, although I plan on doing it after the 2.2 update, but I'll throw away my plans if it means I can actually turn my phone into a competent music player. Is there any app out there that does those two things? I'll even settle for having two separate apps for each, but I don't see how this is so difficult an app to make. When I first got my phone, I was happy that I would no longer have any use for my iPod touch, but this is just saddening.

All the Sprint documentation I have reviewed tells how to play a selection, pause a selection and do other things like shuffle, etc. What I cannot find is how to stop a selection during playback.

I'm trying to build a live streaming player by downloading video segments (which are generated in real-time) and then playing them back in sequence. While I can get the segments to play, I need to get it so that there isn't a pause between playback of successive segments. I've tried using both MediaPlayer (with an appropriate SurfaceView) and VideoView, but there's always a small gap between segments.
If I try to load a new video into a MediaPlayer when the first segment finishes playing, it seems to take half a second or so before the next segment is loaded and starts playing. I have also tried having multiple SurfaceViews within a single ContentView (with only the active one being visible), but it seems like you can't prepare a video until the associated SurfaceView is visible. I also tried having multiple ContentViews that I switch between, but again, this has similar issues.
Any ideas or suggestions? Is it possible to somehow get the next segment to begin decoding as soon as the first one is decoded (which could be before it finishes playing)? Am I going to need to build a custom video player in order to do this?

When using a mediaplayer to play back an audio file, you can set looping to true - that's not the issue here.
If looping is set to true, there's still an audible gap between the file finishing and then starting again.
How could I achieve true gapless playback? I've attempted using two instances of the same file, overriding oncomplete and onseek.. can't seem to improve the gap though.

I just got a new 8gb memory card and want to dump a bunch of music to my Hero, but the music player seems lacking in many respects (functionally) despite looking nice (aesthetically). Has anyone tried other players that both work well and look stylish? sidenote - I was unable to format my memory card with it plugged into my network printer due to not having an adapter, but when the card is mounted and the hero is connected through usb it is reported as FAT32 in the open window. Do I need to worry about formatting? I wasn't sure if there would be any performance gain by doing so. Its a Transcend 8gb class 6.

Whenever I change tracks, there's a few seconds of skipping, almost like buffering, where the sound disappears sporadically.
I recently installed a 16GB microSD card so I was thinking it could be an issue with this card, but I'm not sure.
Anyone else have this problem?

1. I plug my headphones in, and Doubletwist starts playing without me asking it to. Fine.
2. I listen to music perfectly for a while, then pick up my EVO. The song stops, skips to the next track, or starts and stops repeatedly.
3. I uninstall Doubletwist and switch to the Android Music app. Same problems as in (2).
What gives? I can't seem to get stable playback of songs on my SD card. Streaming audio tends to work OK, and isn't plagued by these issues.

Does anyone know how to make a music loop in mp3? I have the loop in OGG and it plays perfectly, when I convert it to MP3 there is some silence at the end of the loop before it starts again.
I understand MP3 does not natively support gapless playback however I know there are some hacks to make it happen. i.e http://www.compuphase.com/mp3/mp3loops.htm
However the utility in the above website didn't work for me.
Basically I am trying to convert my music into a format supported by both iphone and android. iphone does not play OGGs unfortunately. Any ideas how to get the mp3 gapless? Or alternatively is there another music format that is gapless and supported by both iphone and android?

I have had my G2 Touch for nearly a month now and I am noticing that when listening to music in the music player there is a lot of skipping and stuttering. It seems to be worse with particular tracks. I also listen to spotify offline playlists which seem to be OK. Initially, I noticed the problem was worse when I had Last.fm scrobbling turned on...but now that and all data hungry apps are off (that I can think of) and still the bad playback. I am wondering if it is specific to my phone - in which case I am probably still able to get T-mobile to exchange it.

Whenever I try and playback music via BT, regardless of music player (I've tried 3) the music playback speeds up, slows down, speeds up, etc., and will NOT play at a consistant speed. All background processes are disabled, etc. I do NOT notice this same thing during video playback (although there is a 40ms delay in audio sync from the video), but it plays at a constant speed.

The audio/music player on my HTC Hero locks up immediately when it starts. As a result I cannot preview any sounds or play any music unless I stream with pandora or something. I have installed another music player app, which is fine for music, but the default player remains the one that locks up, so if I click an audio file to preview it, that app comes up and locks. Is there a fix for this? Can I somehow set another 3rd party player as default?

Thinking about moving a lot of my MP3s over to the Incredible but just wanted to know what people felt were some good music player apps out there. I'm not particularly happy with the default one on the phone.I'm hoping there's one that has the same slickness as the iPhone/iPod Touch. I like how you can flip over an album to see other tracks on it.

how to add album art to the music player? I have put 3 albums on my HTC Hero and none of them have their album art. I know it's nothing major but it's a nice little touch to be able to see the album art of the song playing.

Sometimes when I'm istening to music, the player 'skips' and sometimes stops all together, until I get it out of my pocket and hit the home button to wake the screen up. I think it's caused by my phone dropping the signal completely, but it only happens when I've got the phone in my pocket. Is there a way to stop this? I've switched from the HTC player to MixZing lite, which has helped a lot, but it still does it.

Wotcher chaps and chapettes, has anyone played with the music app since upgrading to the later Hero rom? If so have you noticed if the app heeds the track order properly or not, or whether it continues to keep re-ordering tracks in alphabetical order?

Earlier I formatted my memory card, probably shouldn't but I thought that as I hadn't put anything on this should be fine. Is this where the sync programme lives, I'm guessing if it is I can download it from somewhere no bother. So, I downloaded a couple of songs off T-mobile, but since formatting my music player does nothing, just says that there are no songs. Doesn't let you search or anything.

Came across this from another section of the site. There's a great new music player called RockOn3 (Search for RockOn in the Market and scroll down to 3). It's in beta, but has still become my default music player. I love the cube for browsing.

Is there anyway to turn off the built in HTC music player? Whenever I hangup from a phone call via bluetooth, the HTC music player will start playing. It always occurs if I was playing music via another music app or listening to a podcast with any program other than the HTC music app.
