HTC Hero :: Awake Mode Fix Needed
May 1, 2010
I've looked all over the internet and in need of some help. I've had my phone for about a month now and the battery as been OK.it would last me most of the day running a few apps and a lot notification apps.I would charge it over night and it would last about 12 hours which is fine by me.Now it is draining so quick it only last maybe 4 hours at the most. i have tried all the suggestion about the standard but message app and replacing it with handcent or chomp but the awake mode is still 100%.i can not get it to go in to sleep mode.i had it on charge all night for about 10 hours and only charged 50%.I also tried using factory reset and then installing 3rd party message app and that didn't help.I'm lost on what to try next. while trying everything i would reboot in between steps. im still on android 1.5 with build 2.73.110.26. its a tmobile phone using a o2 Sim and a rebel Sim. any suggestion would be great.

Are there any adverse affects of using Stay Awake mode for extended periods of time? Will the AMOLED display burnout at some point?

My phone is having the 100% Awake Time issue and I can't figure out why. I've uninstalled a few apps that I thought could be the problem, but that made no difference. I then changed to a completely empty screen layout to remove any possible widget issues, still the same. Last night I installed SystemPanel so I could get a better idea of what's going on and now I'm even more confused. It doesn't show a single thing that's eating up CPU time. Under Battery Use it shows Android System at 43%, then Cell Standby and WiFi at 14%. Is there something in the Android OS that is screwy?
I'm at a complete loss on how to continue trouble shooting this. I'd really rather avoid a complete reset of the phone, but if it's the only option I have. I'm going to go through and uninstall basically everything I can today to see if I can find the culprit, but any ideas would be great. If it was an app though, wouldn't I see it in SystemPanel? Here's some shots of my use this morning. I was using it a bit, but there's obvious spots where the phone should have stopped being "awake".

I have a Droid Incredible that will not enter Sleep mode -- the "Awake time" stays the same as the "Up Time" no matter how often I reboot the phone. I removed any recently downloaded apps and went so far as to do a full factory reset -- the problem remains.
Here's what happens: My battery, which formerly lasted for about 12 hours of regular use, now lasts no more than 4. Settings > About Phone > Battery shows that the Up Time and the Awake Time are the same. "Battery Use" lists a bunch of non-app program (Display, Voice Calls, Cell Standby, Android System, etc), and clicking the little graph at the top of the screen shows that, while the "Screen on", "Phone Signal" and "Charging" go in and out depending on whether the phone is on, has signal or is charging, the "Awake" bar is solidly blue -- as in it has always been awake. Moreover, the phone gets noticeably warm, as if I were using it for an hour or two straight.
I first had this problem a month or so ago. After searching on this forum and others I adjusted the sync rates on things like Facebook and Twitter apps and deleted a couple of apps. The problem went away and I thought all was fixed. Then, yesterday, I was on an airplane, turned my phone off at takeoff and back on upon landing, and soon after I noticed the Awake problem was back.
I hadn't downloaded any new apps recently but went back and deleted a few downloaded in the last three weeks or so anyway. I looked at the current apps running, checked sync frequency on the same old things again, went back to these forums and tried everything that was listed (downloaded some sort of program monitoring apps, force stopped things like Calender that may have been problematic, uninstalled recent updates), all to no avail.

Recently, I had to replace my phone. Well, after I got it rooted and all that, I went with nfinite's stock rom. Since then, my phones awake time has been at 100 %, and I don't know exactly what is causing it. The Battery Use shows nothing out of the ordinary, Cell Standby, Wifi, Display, and Phone.

I would like Google Maps to over-ride the sleep timer on my phone and always stay on. I downloaded the app "Trapster", which is a police notification overlay on top of Google Maps. It has the feature of over-riding the sleep timer and keeps the display always on. Disabling the sleep timer is not an option. I would like Google Maps to have the same functionality a 3rd party overlay app is giving me.

alright, my dad's phone (post update) is at 100% awake time. it wasn't pre-update. my phone is also sitting at a higher awake time post update. i first thought the culprit was the mail app running more often. i have to force close it more frequently now. well, my dad complained about his battery again and i checked the awake time. 100%. he also asked me which programs were essential and i told him to kill the mail app. he said he keeps it open all the time cause he uses it all the time. sooo, now it is looking more to me like it is the mail app keeping the phone from sleeping.

Shut off and restarted my phone at 2pm. Took about 2 mins to start up. Looked at awake time - just under three minutes (100%). Locked the screen and waited until 3pm to check the awake time. At 3pm my awake time was about 3 minutes (5%) AWESOME.
Shortly after, I missed a call. Green notification light was flashing so I check the notifications. Missed call and voicemail. I did not clear the notifications. Checked the awake time, still 5%. I locked the screen. No other notifications, calls, texts, emails, etc for the next hour and forty-five minutes, but my awake time was now one hour and forty-eight minutes (62%).
I did not clear the notifications from the missed call and the voice mail earlier, could that be keeping my phone awake? If so, that is absolutely ********. Is there a fix for this or some setting I am not aware of?

I have seen posts around this thread where people are stating that they are getting awake times on their phone at around 10-15% If you are one of these lucky posters, how in the world are you doing it. Best I can ever get is around 45% I think I have tried most of the suggestions on the board to lower it as much as I can. Is there some super secret pro-tip that you 15% people have figured out?

I have a vanilla Hero. Since I bought it (around 2 months ago), the awake time has NEVER been under 100%. I installed the Modaco 2.9 ROM yesterday (which I highly recommend; my Hero is now much faster) and it's STILL 100%.
Spare parts tell me that the culprit appears to be 'Android system'.
I'd like to reduce my wake time if it's at all possible.
I'm aware of the messaging app/dialer issue; that's not what this is, since I'm using CHOMP sms and it's still an issue.

So this is Ground Shattering news for anyone having sleep issues. If your Hero is reporting 100% awake status, you'll need to find out what the culprit is. Until today I had only known to remove and install apps one by one. A developer just brought my attention to the app Spare Parts. Download Spare Parts from market, open it,>Battery History>drop down menu default is CPU Usage, select and change to partial wake Usage. This will show which apps are keeping phone from sleeping.

I'm in the process of re-installing my apps, trying to find a culprit that might be keeping my phone awake - and was wondering if anyone else thinks they've found some guilty parties. So far the only app I've installed is the HTC Battery widget. Everything else is stock from the 2.1 leak. I'll probably put the official rom on there eventually (especially if I still can't fix the awake problem), but since it doesn't seem to be any different, I'm not in a hurry. Now, my phone seems to be going right to sleep when I press the end button. My awake time is a fraction of the up time.I just started using the Seido extended life battery (1750 I think), and I've put the phone through some heavy use - a one hour phone call using bluetooth, several other shorter calls, some instant messaging, lots of texts, some internet use and camera use. And I've not charged it since leaving the house. So far, I'm at 57% - which far exceeds anything I've experienced before 2.1, and before the extended battery. Right now I'm looking at all-day use with the phone - which is ideal. My issue is that I want to prevent the phone from staying awake again. 100% awake time always seems to cut my battery life in half, if not more. There doesn't seem to be a clean way for me to do this. Even after I uninstall all of my applications, the problem doesn't seem to correct itself until I restore the phone to factory settings. For this reason - it's hard to pin down which application (or setting) might be the culprit.

As the title says is it possible that PRI 1.70_003 is causing the 100% awake issue on our Google Branded Sprint Hero's? It seems like the phones with 1.68_003 were fixed with the update and all of us with PRI: 1.70 are fixed for a day and then goes back to 100%.

Anyone notice that after the update, when they charge their phone, the phone stays awake the whole time and starts getting really hot?? There was an option to make the phone go to sleep in 1.5 while charging, but is there also that same option on 2.1?

Before everybody redirects me to the standard "ways to extend your battery life" threads, I believe I've tried all the usual tricks, which is why I'm posting another thread. This is really starting to drive me nuts. Up until a few weeks ago, I was getting good battery life. A couple of days worth with normal usage, which I think is reasonable with all considered. But now, it lasts about half a day, which is obviously not much use when you can only charge it at night.I've been checking the "awake time" and sometimes it just keeps staying high. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. When the awake time is high, it is also warm to the touch, as if it is doing a lot of processing or something.
I've also been using "spare parts" to see what appears under "partial awake". I have never seen anything under this which accounts for the awake time. For example, the awake time might say "15 hrs", but "partial awake" in spare parts shows the biggest thing as being "Android system", but only taking "2 mins".I have (as far as I can tell) disabled the standard HTC messages app, and am now using Handcent SMS.I have turned off bluetooth and GPS, but leave wifi and mobile data on. I know switching these off saves power, but I've always had them on without as much drain as I do now.I have done a factory reset, and reinstalled all my usual apps, and left off any which I don't really need. All seemed well for a few days, but then the drain started again.
I have a feeling my battery drain is due to an update to an app, but as it's not consistent, I can't figure out which app or update it could be.As it is, with the battery lasting for less time than I am out in the day, it makes it a really rubbish phone, and just not fit for purpose. Is there any other way, other than using "spare parts", that I can tell what is using my power?

-Phone unplugged from the charger at 9:12 with 100% Battery power (according to battery indicator)
-Access the market once
-wake up the phone at 9:43 and the battery indicator is down to 94%
wtf? Check spare parts partial wake usage since last unplugged and the Calander is up there at the top above the Android system.

For those that suffer from poor battery life or high awake times, I was given a code to enter that will give you all kinds of hidden info about the battery and what programs are running in the background keeping the phone from sleeping. Hit phone, as if you were dialing a number to call, enter *#*#4636#*#*, then talk. You will seee a menu come up that you can change to show you all kinds of hidden info on the phone and battery. Hope this helps some of you that are suffering poor battery performance and high awake times.

I was wondering if we can compile a list of apps that makes the awake time higher on the phone or makes the battery drain faster? I just got my hero today, and am trying to figure this out? It could potentially help others too!

Explain to me in detail what exactly "awake time" and "up time" mean? I am so confused. I unplugged my phone at 6:20am today with a full charge and it is now 9:52am. I have been running Pandora since 7am consistently. My battery is almost under halfway with bars..my uptime is 45:12:40 and my awake time is 16:07:05 (36%).

Over the last week or so I've been obsessed with trying to get my hero into sleep mode, in order to save battery. For those who don't know about this, there are many threads around the net telling of a fix for the messages bug, which prevents the phone entering sleep. It's supposed to reduce CPU usage, thus saving battery.
Now, I've followed the methods of many people who claim to have done this successfully, down to a tee, but for the life of me, I can't get it to work. For some reason my awake time is always at 100%. It's now at the pont of driving me mad, and I'm just wondering if anyone else has tried and failed to do the fix. If anyone needs background info on this problem, I'll post a link up later, as I'm sending this via my phone at the minute.
