HTC Eris :: Carrier Name Change
Apr 4, 2010
So I read we can now change the carrier name from Verizon Wireless to anything we want with 16 char's. In the Droid, you edited the eri.xml file from the framework.apk. When I did this, I didnt see anything that said Verizon Wireless in HEX. Did a lil research and this seems to only apply to the Droid. Question I have is, has anyone found where we can edit this for the Eris.

Got an eris here programmed for alltel's data, i did it myself by changing values in the programming menu, i now have a droid x on my alltel i programmed and want to give the eris to my buddy on vzw how do i restore it back to factory defaults? Its activated but data doesn't work and calls are flaky and sms is flaky too.. A system restore of the phone doesn't return the programming menu of the phone back to verizon's default. Stays at alltels values. .. its running latest 2.1 vzw OTA.
I know that with my droid X if i flash the factory rom with a desktop computer to restore it with factory firmware it puts the radio back to default settings. How do i do this on an HTC?
Does HTC have a Desktop flash restore that i can download??

Come in and speculate! Will T-Mobile,VZW or any other carriers get an EVO like device? I have one rule and one rule only. If you think someone is a tool or troll or whatever don't flame them publicly in here! I DO NOT WANT THS THREAD TO GET LOCKED!

basically I'm running FreeXperia's CM9 on my Xperia U, and it doesn't recognise/support my network (carrier) which is Virgin Mobile UK, an MVNO.
I believe this is a general issue with Cyanogenmod, my phone works but it says no service instead of the network name, it's seriously annoying. Cyanogenmod has the Virgin Mobile apns in it's apns-conf.xml, but it won't use these as it can't see that that is the network I am connected to.
Basically my phone should display:
Virgin = when using T-Mobile UK
virgin = when using Orange UK.
Instead it just says no service the whole time?
I'd like to add support rather than just use an app to change the text.
MCC - 234, MNC - 31 and MCC - 234, MNC - 32.

Let me start by saying that I'm sure this has been covered but a search revealed nothing and an updated discussion can always help. So again, sorry for covering treaded ground, but here we go.I'm leaving my job and giving up my company blackberry - so I need a new phone/carrier/the whole package. I am at this point pretty darn addicted to smartphones and use them heavily for web browsing, email, maps, twitter, playing music, and scheduling myself (I don't really play games though). While my blackberry curve was leagues better than my old Windows Mobile-powered-Wing it still has left a lot to be desired. I need a step up.So its basically iphone vs an Android phone and while the iphone seems to win in nearly all the benchmarks out there, I just can't get past the Apple Tax, closed platform, non-replaceable battery, and my general Google fanboy-ism. I could also see myself developing OSS apps at some point - which Android has the more compelling story for.Further research has lead me to view my options as the Nexus, HTC Droid, or Eris. The Eris - although it has great reviews - just seems a bit kiddie so it's a distant third. My concerns are in this order* Good hardware (I'm ok with an onscreen keyboard unless the touchscreen sucks)
* Total cost of ownership
* Ability to use at my new job (meaning syncing with Exchange Server - though this shouldn't be a huge problem)
* Snazzy Operating system.

I just arrived to the Android world as the Desire is my first Android device. I would be grateful if someone could answer my question. I *did* search the forum for the answer before posting, but being completely new to Android, I couldn't find the one that would satisfy me - so if it is out there, please forgive me for asking it here.Anyway, coming from the N900 I was used to OTA OS updates without restrictions. Now, I'm looking forward to the 2.2 version of the Android (mostly for Flash 10.1 and apps installable on the SD card). However, I got the impression (hopefully a wrong one) that in order to install 2.2 on your Desire (unlocked), it must be pushed by your phone service provider/carrier (as opposed to the N900 where you could just download it and flash your device with it or upgrade over-the-air). This is a problem for me, since the carriers in my country don't seem to be interested in sending any OS upgrades (to any device) and the upgrade must be done manually. As I mentioned, the device is not locked to any carrier (if by that it means that you can put any SIM card in it and it works). Now, I know you could root your Desire and do it, but I'm wondering if there will be a way to upgrade to 2.2 (or just replace by flashing) without rooting? Also, if rooting is my only option - how dangerous is it? The N900 came rooted out-of-the-box (you just download the app to gain superuser privileges) so I have no idea what are the possible risks of doing it on your Desire. Can it permanently damage the phone?

I'm planning to buy a Samsung i7500 Galaxy when available in the UK. I'll probably buy an unlocked one on Ebay or similar. This is because I spend over half the year outside the UK, travelling. This is mostly in Europe and the USA but can be elsewhere. I'm therefore looking for a UK SIM-only deal for voice (light usage of perhaps 100 minutes per month), SMS (very few, perhaps 5 per month), and 3G data. A good deal on international roaming 3G data would be especially welcome.

I've tried searching around but didn't find any unlocking information for this device. I plan on getting this bad boy tomorrow and would like to know what's involved in getting this device unlocked. I currently have a contract with AT&T and cannot upgrade to the captivate so I plan on buying this from Costco. Would I be able to use this on AT&T and if so can someone point me in the right direction. This will be my first Android phone and can't wait to play with it!

When I attempt to set Google Voice for my voicemail I get a message stating:
"Carrier configuration
Unfortunately your network carrier is currently not supported for automatic voicemail configuration. To use Google Voice as your voicemail provider, please visit the Google Voice Help Center for more information."
Of course the help center offers no help for this issue. Note, I did a number port from US Cellular to Sprint, I'm not sure if that is the source of the problem. I did deactivate my Google Voice voicemail and then activated it again with Sprint labeled as the carrier. Still nothing.

Ok first off, let me just say I absolutely love my phone. Pretty much everything about it makes me smile. I got it the first week it came out (got it at Best Buy - only place in Tucson with it in stock) and have loved every minute of it. I surf these forums (just registered today though) and noticed people with battery issues or stuff like that. I have none of that and usually get a day and a half of battery life if I dont use lots of apps or play games. I have one issue though! My first question is with the camera cover... the little plastic/glass cover over it really. My phone was getting a lot of dust under the cover of it and it was bugging me. So I took it to a Verizon store and they did a warranty replacement for me. The lady told me "Im not supposed to do this but I'll do it this one time." so I said thank you and was fine with it, but then she told me to go get a case to prevent it happening again. Well.... first off there I havent really seen a case that covers the camera part, and if there was one, I wouldnt want it as I use the camera a lot. Anyways, my replacement phone was fine for about 3 weeks and then I noticed the red ring was a bit loose on it. The sticky tape kinda came off a bit and now there is dust starting to get under this one. Should I be bothered by this or am I overreacting?
Also, a question for the future. I know my dad wants to cancel with Verizon and get a cheaper plan with a different company. Problem is, we're on a family plan so if he switches my bill will skyrocket. Im currently 21 and have a shitty job. so Im wondering if there is anyone who knows of a guide to flash the Incredible to Cricket service (I know its not that good of service, but it'd be 1/2 the price of me on Verizon alone). I know it can be done, but I dont feel like paying a guy $50 to do it for me.

I need a little friendly help on the subject of phone and carrier selection. My options are; Subbed Nexus One with T-Mobile plan Unsubbed Nexus One with cheaper T-Mobile plan roid/Eris with about Verizon plan (I get a discount) and wait for the Nexus One on VZW. Eventually I would like to get the Nexus One, but Verizon's plan will actually be cheaper than T-Mobile because I get a discount with them. That is unless I get the N1 unsubbed, but I think is a lot for a phone. I would be super paranoid about it messing up or me breaking it. VZW has better coverage overall, but they both have about the same where I actually live. I have about two weeks before I have to do something, my old contract ends soon.

I have just got my Motorola Milestone ready and working. I have set up the Internet carrier APNs (HSDPA, EDGE, 3G etc) and I wonder if it is possible that Android asks me for confirmation when connecting to one? I don't like the idea of changing the APN name to cheat/workaround it (to make it impossible to connect by setting up non-existing APN), I like to see what connection possibilities are around me. When I'm at home I have a WiFi and also would like to be sure the whole transfer is being done by WiFi, not EDGE. With each connection request confirmation I'd be sure I have it under control.

I don't know about most of you, but as an indie developer I'm faced with the growing need to:
1) Test visibility of my app on various hardware/carrier combinations 2) Test basic functionality on various hardware/carrier configurations
You would think it would be a wise investment for manufacturers to gift phones to devs for testing purposes, but most don't. It would be nice to have a collection of devs and/or users who have access to as wide a range as possible of configurations, so a dev with a new app could just send a mail to everyone on the list and ask them to check that the app is available on the market from their device and that it downloads and seems to launch and run all right. Is anyone else interested in trying to form such a group? Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to organize it (website, separate mailing list)? I wouldn't want to clog this list every time someone wants to check an app.

Does anyone know if there's a way to manually switch from one carrier to another in code?
I could get actual operator data with serviceState.getOperatorAlphaLong (); etc, but wasn't able to find a solution to actually switch from one to another. Does one need to use AT commands or similar?

I have a broken Samsung I500A (11.11). The screen is cracked and does not show a picture or I would turn it on to find out. Is there any other way to find out which carrier this device belongs to? I have called Verizon, U.S. Cellular and CSpire and neither of them can find the MEID in their system.

I noticed that my Nexus One (stolen the 8th of July) still appears on my devices lists on Google Play, with some interesting information I want to clarify that this happens with the Google Account password changed (because I did it after the theft)!
My carrier wasn't Wind but H3G.
I assume there is nothing I can do, because I've changed the password of the Google Account (for security reasons), but I'm curious if there is some different way to find the new SIM number.
The IMEI would be blocked on the entire territory from tomorrow, so this thief will be able to use it with no phone functions.

I built Phone.apk from the source code, and the resulting application could not find a carrier. I suspect that there are specific target builds required here (note that I DID add "TARGET_PRODUCT := htc_dream" as required to the Makefile), but there are no other vendors available under the Vendor folder in the source (i.e., T- Mobile, etc). Am I off base? Should Phone.apk be able to work on our HTC dream phones without additonal modifications?
