General :: Why Is There No Recovery Tool Based On DD Command

Aug 14, 2013

Am I wrong in thinking that a dd based tool would be better than having to rely on a 3rd party recovery? If you used to dd, you wouldn't have to deal with any of that stuff right? Could you not just make images of all the partitions of your device and store them on your computer as backup? Then if you get bricked, could you not use those images again and just re-image the drive?

That's the problem I'm having with my device. My buttons will no longer function so I can't flash anything in the recovery and using Odin (Samsung) to flash works but no existing roms or kernels that I can find will fix the touchscreen.

However, I can access the device through ADB and I'm assuming I could get the device to show its partitions on Linux right? So then could I use someone else's existing partitions and re-image those on my device?

LG Ally :: TOOL - Recovery Flasher Script (Linux)

Oct 21, 2010

Well I got bored again and made a recovery flasher for linux. Amazing Flashing SH Script! This a a very simple script with 3 functions, to flash clockwork, amonRA, and reboot into recovery. Simply unpack the zip and chmod +X flasher (or chmod 777) This has ADB included. I dont have an ally to test, but I tested it with my incredible from a liveCD environment at work, so I know you dont need adb or drivers for this to work.

usage:

flasher -c
Flash Clockwork
flasher -a
Flash AmonRA
flasher -r
Reboot to Recovery

Your phone will need to be plugged into the pc via USB, with debugging on and the sdcard not mounted on the pc

HTC Incredible :: Root - Wireless N Hack Using Recovery Tool?

Jun 24, 2010

once we get root and install the recovery tool, we'll never have to go through the loop process again to get into recovery. I feel like that's a major newb question but just wanted to make sure. If that's the case, can somebody list or point me to the procedure to do the wireless N hack using the recovery tool? Just read in the thread below how some users might be having problems with wireless teather after doing the "N" hack. If this is the case, perhaps it's best to skip it altogether.

HTC EVO 4G :: Rooted W/ Unrevoked 3 - Tried To Install Bakedsnack 1.9

Nov 19, 2010

I put the bakedsnack1.9.evo.zip on the sd card, wiped data/factor rst and wiped cache partition as the notes say. I then went ahead and tried to install the rom off the sd card and i'm getting "can't open /sdcard/bakedsnack1.9.evo.zip bad) installation aborted.

Did I do something wrong when I rooted?

It may be the rom, I just tried to unzip and I'm getting an error. I'm going to redownload and open it on the pc to ensure it opens then send to sd card and try again.

Update. just redownloaded it from bakedsnack.com and that one also will not open.. Odd

HTC EVO 4G :: Round Battery Meter From BakedSnack In Other ROMs?

So I'm finally settling down on a ROM configuration I like. I'm currently using the following:
DamageControl 3.2.3
DroidX Boot Screen
Rotary Lockscreen
ADW Launcher

It's a great combination, but the one thing I miss right now came from the BakedSnack 9.6 ROM and that's the 6 segmented round battery meter in the status bar. Anyone know how to get that or at least something better than the default battery icon?

Android :: AsyncTask Won't Stop Even When Activity Has Destroyed

Mar 27, 2010

I have an AsyncTask object which starts executing when the activity is created and does stuff in the background (downloads upto 100 images). Everything works fine but there is this peculiar behavior which i'm not able to understand. For eg: when the android screen's orientation changes then the activity is destroyed and created again. So I override the onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() method and save all the downloaded data executed in the AsyncTask. My purpose of doing this is to not have AsyncTask run each time activity is destroyed-created during orientation changes, but as i can see in my logs the previous AsynTask is still executing. (The data is saved correctly though)I even tried to cancel the AsynTask in the onDestroy() method of the activity but the logs still show AsynTask as running. This is really strange behavior and would really be thankful if someone can tell me the correct procedure to stop/cancel the AsynTask.

Android :: Remote Service Destroyed When Main Activity Closed / How To Fix?

Nov 19, 2010

I wrote an android program that: has a main activity for UI, and it starts a service. The service timely callbacks the UI activity to update views. It works fine except: if the activity is closed (with BACK) and start again, the service will also be started again (The service plays audio file, so there are two overlapped sounds). I use bindService with BIND_AUTO_CREATE flag to start and connect to service. According to the document, it should create service only if it doesn't exist, but obviously it starts another instance when opened second time. All I want is when the activity is closed, the service goes on running, and when the activity opens again, it can reconnect to the service. Is that possible? Or I just misunderstand the usage of service?

Android :: Distinguish When App Is Being Finalized Vs Destroyed For Screen Orientation Change

Mar 20, 2010

I am relatively new to the Android world and am having some difficultly understanding how the whole screen orientation cycle works. I understand that when the orientation changes from portrait to landscape or vice versa the activity is destroyed and then re-created. Thus all the code in the onCreate function will run again. So here's my situation: I have an app that I am working on where it logs into a website, retrieves data, and displays it to the user. While this is all done in background threads, the code that starts these threads is in the onCreate function. Now, the problem lies in that whenever the user changes the screen orientation, the app will log in, retrieve the data, and display it to the user again. What I would like to do is set a boolean that tells the app if it is logged in or not so it knows whether or not it must log in when the onCreate function is called. So long as the app is in memory the HttpClient will exist and contain the cookies from logging the user in but when the app is killed by the system those will go away. So I would assume that I need to do something like setting the logged in boolean to false when the app is killed but since onDestroy is called when the screen is rotated how is this possible? I also looked into the finalize function and isFinishing() but those seem to not be working.

Shorter version: How can I distinguish between when an app is being killed from memory from when an activity is being rotated and different code for each event?

Android :: Activity Which Downloads Data In Background With Service - Doesn't Get Destroyed On Hitting Back Button

Nov 9, 2010

I need to develop an application with downloads the data at the background and update about the progress in the front.

I guess this can be achieved using services and activity and passing data in between the. But, what I need to do is even if I hit back button and then start the activity again. It should check if the service is running or not. If service is not running it should start one else it should display the data from running service.

Something like music player where music is played by a service at a background and activity displays the information. Even on browsing through other activities of the application or hitting back, state of the music player is maintained.

HTC Incredible :: Updating Radio - How To Boot Into Stock Recovery And Not Clockworks Recovery

Aug 11, 2010

ok, so I put the PB31IMG file on my sdcard, and the dinc_ota. I changed dinc_ota to update. (I did not name the file update.zip.zip) I powered down, I entered bootloader, and it loaded the PB31IMG and whatever. then I hit volume down and selected recovery. this brought me to clockwork recovery. I noticed the isntructions said to boot into STOCK recovery. well, I like a dummy ignored that and tried to apply the update.zip thru clockwork.

This is what I got:

CODE:.......................

So, is this because I tried doing it through clockwork recovery? is it because I didn't apply the first OTA update we got? what does that mean exactly anyways? is it saying I need to install the leaked froyo ROM, and then update the radio? How do I boot into stock recovery and not clockworks recovery? does this count as applying the update.zip once, meening if I do it again I'll brick my phone? should I sell this thing and get a samsung flip phone because I'm too stupid to own a Dinc?

Motorola Droid :: Fix - Stock Recovery Coming Back / Custom Recovery Wont Stick

Aug 24, 2010

First off let me say that I was wrong about this issue. Its not an issue with Easy root it is just something built into android. So I apologize to anyone I argued this subject with but specifically Patch. Its also not an issue with rom manager. This applys to users that after flashing a custom recovery they can boot into it once but the next time you try to boot into recovery it has reverted to stock.

This mostly happens to users of easy root or users that use my guide for rooting using Linux

So for the fix.

Download this file and place it in the root of your sd card.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7223192/install-recovery.sh

Download Terminal Emulator from the market. The one by the dev Jack Palevich.
Open it and type the following commands.

su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
dd if=/sdcard/install-recovery.sh of=/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
chmod 550 /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
sync

after that just flash the custom recovery of your choice and you should be good to go.

I tested this on my phone and another user tested it for me and it worked for both of us. If anyone has an issue let me know. This issue is so sporadic that its hard to have people test the fix.
