HTC EVO 4G :: After 2.2 Update Phone Is Now Getting Only 4 Hours Battery Life?
Aug 5, 2010
Is this happening to anyone else? sucks man...This is my second handset was flawless until this most recent update. After my phone comes off from a full charge it will die after 4 hours, no exaggeration! I have already tried closing the unwanted "syncing apps" still no good. What the heck should I do?

How long will the battery last if music is played continuously? I will be going on a very long bus ride from Brampton, Ontario to Boston. Thats around 8-10 hours. Will the battery last 10-12 hours atleast? that way i have some juice for any emergencies.

Screen resolution was incredible (no pun intended), but the phone would get really washed out fast if viewed at an angle. My Hero's display is sharp at any angle, the Evo's screen must not have an IPS display, straight on is the only way to see well.
I did the multitouch test on the screen (the one that the Nexus One and other HTC devices didn't do so well on). It worked very well and didn't lose track of my fingers like the N1/Hero would.
4G in the city I'm in, except, driving around, it was almost not worth it. It's hilly and the signal would go in and out like mad, eating up battery and making applications stop while the phone figured itself out. At a stand-still the phone did fine, driving around, leave it on 3G, I would say. I literally felt like I had an original iPhone 3G on AT&T all of the sudden. I was just staring at the bars waiting for the signal to drop and my phone sit there like I had no signal. And btw, Clear's site shows my house to have FULL 4G, and I do not have a usable signal in my house and barely outside... Not enough of a gain in bandwidth to warrant even trying 4G at home. I'll just stick to 3G. They've REALLY got to work on that network. 6mbps? I am one of the only Evo's out there and I only got around 2.5mbps with a full 4G signal (yes, I know, Clear is used for other things than phones). That's 3G speed, not 4G. Can't wait to see how much switching between 3G and 4G eats up battery life...
Speedtest.net gave up to 2.5mbps download, and around 1mbps upload (capped). This is so-so fast, not really what I would call "4G" as my friend's Verizon Droid consistently gets 2mbps download, and he has a signal everywhere, unlike 2500mhz Sprint/Clear 4G. Also, 4G seemed to just turn off every now and then. I'd have to hit the 4G Widget off/on to get it to reconnect. Didn't happen but once, but still...
The User Interface is very nice, and that large screen makes browsing easy. The keyboard is FABULOUS. Used stock and Smart Keyboard Pro and I could type like the freaking wind. Love it.
The phone doesn't feel slim like the N1 or Incredible. It's a big manly phone. I wouldn't say the proportions are bad. It's all black and thinner than my Hero (pictures to come), but I certainly don't think 'oh my god how thin' when I look at it, like I do with the N1 or Incredible. It is very handsome. All black, very nice front area and very simple, nice back. Innards are red as all get out, of course.
2.1 Update 1 is running on the phone. No 2.2 here.
The camera seems really decent, from my minor use. Flash is BRIGHT for LED, and the sensitivity is impressive with low-light video.
Reception (3G) seems stellar. You won't have any issues here compared to other phones. It has great 3G reception. As for 4G, as mentioned above, we'll see....

Update:
40 hours and it finally died!!
36 hours and 16%!!
33 hours and 27%
28 hours and 48% I'm rooted (unrevoked) BUT I'm not running this over/under-clocking widget, nor do I run ATK or any other task killer! In fact, here's some of my pertinent settings:
- Disabled 4G (can't get it where I live anyways)
- WiFi HotSpot (android-wifi-tether) is obviously OFF most of the time
- WiFi is ON, weak signal to boot (AP in back of house)
- BlueTooth is ON, but not active/paired
- GPS is ON
- HTC Weather/Time Widget is on
- Turned off FriendStream widget
- Not running any silly MySpace/FaceBook/Twitter widgets
- Push Email (ActiveSync from Exchange, average about 100 emails and 5 appts per day)
- Calendar alerts were on vibrate most of the past 2 days but I turned that off as I don't need it
- Also have K-9 running IMAP with a 5 min poll
- I use speakerphone at least 50% of the time, and I had about 30 calls over the past 2 days
- I've installed a bunch of apps, but nothing to manage the system/cpu
- I'm running a pre-alpha of the security/anti-malware software I'm building
- All of the Sprint/factory/HTC apps continue to run, but I seldom use them
- I turned of all haptic feedback (uses vibrate) but phone/sms still vibrate
- All other settings are factory, I'm "keeping it simple"
I've had the phone a week basically, and let the phone die COMPLETELY on Thursday morningish, and I charged it up and used it that day and let it charge to 100% that night. I unplugged the phone around 1:30am, this was Thursday night. It was never this good though, I'm really surprised to be honest! Ok, here's the pics. You'll note a whopping 11 hours of Awake time too. Below is from early this morning when I woke up - 1 day 4 hours unplugged: This is from just a moment ago (10am Saturday) - 1 day 8 hours unplugged: Oh and this morning I did some texts, took a couple of short calls, and 2 videos of my daughter's swim meet races.. Oh I also checked all of my work emails, and I had to send these pics to other email so I could get them onto my computer because I didn't want to plug the phone in yet. I'm going to see how long it makes it before it dies.. Shooting for ~50 hours Again, this was from a full charge and includes 1 day, 2 nights, and now another morning thus far. I plan to do but have not yet done the CDMA-GSM trick, the battery green charge on/off trick, and also monitor my TWS at some point - that will be for the next test though, as I don't want to muck with this test (normal every day use test)Edit: I see now if I disabled BlueTooth I'd save the battery even more, as it looks like it's sucking up a lot of battery and for no reason right now since nothing is paired or has been for the past ~24 hours.

I've been using my Desire for three days now, and been quite happy with it. Except for the fact that I can barely get three hours of battery life out of it, with "normal" use. (A couple of text messages/MSN conversations, quick web browsing every now and then). I've tried everything, turning syncs to 6 hours intervals, switching off 3G and WiFi, reducing screen brightness etc.
But the battery still loses about 1% per 1 minute. This can't be normal, right? Is this something that will improve over time? Could I have a faulty battery that needs replacing? I don't have unrealistic expectations for the battery life, just lasting for a full working day is enough for me, and I assume that should be possible.

There was another thread about this posted already but it had no poll!! Here's another with an actual poll. I hope this helps all of us get an idea of what kind of battery life to expect with the STOCK 1300mah battery.

I've tried BB 0.4 with two different kernels no good and kangerade 5.0.9 think. Still no good. Display is always on lowest setting possible but battery usage for display is well over 50. Only lasting 8-12 hours. First 10% drains in 10 minutes. Wtf!!! Overclock widget hasn't helped. And haven't tried setcpu. No credit card. So does setcpu improve battery life dramatically? Never had a problem with battery life before rooted Froyo. Ne suggestions? I just saw a new SS rom and new Chevy kernel. Anyone have any luck with them yet?

I have terrible battery life with the 2.0d ROM. I don't really know why either as when I look at the battery usage, everything is pretty low except for the Cell Standby. On that note, has anyone else experienced terrible signal? Cause, I am.

Is anyone else having serious problems with the battery life? After fully charging the phone, I can't get more than 12 hours usage out of it, even if it's on standby for 95% of the time. I'm guessing something is seriously using up the battery somewhere but I'm not sure what. I've been to Settings --> About --> Phone Usage and it says where the battery has been used, but 40%+ is on Phone idle, and 40%+ is on cell idle (I'm guessing signal), but surely this shouldn't be happening, the figures on the Sony website give standby hours in the hundreds not less than 10.

I have HTC desire and find my battery life from fully charged to dead is between 4 hours to 6 hours.
Is anybody else having this problem or do you think the battery is faulty ?
I've only had the phone 4 months and find it annoying that i have to turn phone off to save battery. What's point having it as a phone if you have to turn it off..

For those few whose battery life is actually not as good post-update have you figured out why yet? This is my first full day after doing the update last night and the battery is draining faster than it did before (even in standby). All settings are the same as before and I started with a 100 percent charge this morning. I am now down to 64% after 7 1/2 hours of light use. While that may sound like an improvement for some it actually isn't for me. Not a deal breaker but I would love to get my excellent battery life back (24-36 hours -- yes I am a light user especially when I am home a lot, which I am in the summer). The only thing different that I can see is that google talk doesn't stay disabled like it did before. Wifi is way down on the list of things using the battery and nothing seems out of place or not sleeping properly.

Did your battery life improve or get worse after the update? I did not update yesterday after reading about all the bricked phones. I got the message to update this evening but cancelled it for now because I absolutely need my phone tomorrow and because I am leery about what it will do to my near-perfect EVO. I get good to great battery life currently but do have some slight grounding issues. It would be nice to have those fixed and several report overall better performance.
But I have seen a few posts saying that battery life got worse, and the ones who say it is better are still not as good as I am currently getting. I got burned with an update once before (Samsung Moment 2.1 - supposed to make everything better but in reality made my decent battery life only half what it was before). So I wanted to get some input from those of you who have already done the OTA update - what are the results on the battery life?

Minimal use, but still. Probably about 20 texts and checked email 3 or 4 times. Currently unplugged for 12+ hours and my battery is at 90%!
Let me first say, I'm rooted and running a noobnl's Andromeda custom ROM, bloatware is removed, OmaDRMconfigService.drm removed.
3G and wifi off by using Quick Settings (from market) except when in use.

I was just wondering what settings I can tweak to improve the X's battery life after the 2.2 update. I do not want to root or uninstall bloatware, though (I did that with 2.1 and had a bitch of a time getting the OTA 2.2 to install correctly).

A few days ago I woke up really excited to get my Froyo update. The first day I had it I had an error that kept occurring because of the htc keyboard I had previously been using. After restoring the keyboard to stock that problem went away, but the biggest problem of all took the forefront. I can't go more than 5 hours without needing to charge my phone. Before the update I usually charged my phone daily because I am a relatively heavy user. After the update, I am not using my phone any more than before. Today I charged my phone 3 times. Some people have said it is the facebook app, but I uninstalled the latest updates. I have noticed many of my programs are opening up in the background on their own.

I updated to 2.2 (Froyo) a couple days ago. While not really noticing anything significantly different, I have noticed my battery life is much shorter now. Before the 2.2 upgrade I'd unplug my phone around 8am. Thoughout the day I'd use it a bit simple internet searches, maybe 10 SMS, and maybe about 30 minutes of talk time. In addition I have a couple programs (Loopt, Weatherbug) that use GPS routinely to pinpoint my position. I aslo have Facebook and a news tracker that autoupate from time to time throughout the day. Even with all this by 10pm my battery would still show in the green approximately at 40%.I upgraded to 2.2 and have noticed my battery life is way worse.Today I unplugged the phone around 8am. The battery showed a full charge at that time.I didn't make a single call, or even turn the screen on whatsoever until around noon.At that time I sent a single SMS and noticed that my battery was yellow, probably around 20%. By 2pm the phone shut itself down due to a weak battery.I charged it up again and once again, in about 4 hours time my phone was nearly dead.I've checked all my settings and they are the same as they were before the 2.2 upgrade. If I look at the screen that shows what using your battery it indicates that 92% is being used by the andriod operating system. Not sure what the percentage was with 2.1 but that seems awfully high when you're not doing anything.Anybody else having the same problem? For what it's worth, my data calulator only showed 35kb up and 85kb down during the 6 hours this morning before my phone shut down.

Ever since I have downloaded and installed the latest update I have been seeing horrible battery life.
With airplane mode on I have been experiencing 2-3% decrease in battery per hour with NO USE!
This is completely rediculous and unacceptable. Do they even test these updates before they push them out to eveyone?
I have juice defender and an autokill app. I was getting 1 1/2 days before the update. I am lucky to make it to bed now before my battery is dead. I have alost noticed a lot more running services popping up then before and I have no idea what the issue is
I am getting really sick and tired of this phone really fast... If they don't have these problems fixed by the 30th. Its going right back to the sprint store and I am going back to the iphone.

Has anyone else noticed any significant decrease in battery life since applied the recent VZW software update? I've been pretty impressed with my Fascinate's battery life pre-update, but since applying the update 2 days ago I see a significant decrease in battery life. Just wondering if I am alone. Aside from the update, I have not changed anything else about my phone (no new widgets, no new running programs, never rooted).

i have a G1 and i dont know if its just my phone or battery or what. But the life is terrible, i have everything off, no brightness, timeout to 30s, all the wifi/bluetooth/etc is off. Yet after about an hour of takign it off a full charge it drops to 70%, i can barely make it 4-5 hours in a day when its not even being used! Seeing that i want to upgrade anyway, so i can get the newer operating systems and better phone hardware, what phones right now have the best battery operating life? I hardly use the phone for its data features. I basically use the phone as a phone,a decent amount of txt messaging, ill use wifi here and there, and ill manually sync some calendar items. Im on T-mobile, whatre youre phone suggestions? Im trying to keep them at $300 or lower.

I know this phone isn't know for blinding speed (at least running it stock), but lately it's having trouble keeping up with text input from the keyboard. Is this normal? I am using taskiller to kill any not needed background apps and normally have over 120mb left in RAM. Any tips on what I can do to fix this? I'm trying to hold off rooting until I get the t-mobile update. Also, does the phone normally give inaccurate battery readings to the widgets? Because I am literally looking at the phone and watching the percentage go up... up 6 percent in the last hour. lol anyone else getting this?

I have had this phone for a little over 4 days now and it is by far the best smart phone on battery life that I have ever owned. Yesterday was the best day yet, I pulled the phone off the charger at 7am yesterday and forgot to put it back on the charger before I crashed out last night. This morn I was woken up to its alarm clock, got ready, headed out to work and the last 20% warning ding'd at 6:45 this morning. My use through out the day consisted of a few short phone calls, the wifi was on all day, I played an hours worth of home run derby, I watched a few you tube videos, surfed a little net, and I have all my accounts synced up to the Motorola widgets (facebook, myspace, yahoo, hotmail, google, and twitter). I also have a live wallpaper running, lots of widgets on my home screens, and I am running the automatic battery profile ( default factory setting). Oh and my phone service is not that great at my house. In the end I my battery never hit the "red" and was a little over 24 hours of battery life before I put it on the charger. I have read threads about poor battery performance and I cant imagine why my battery performance is so good, and with such a huge screen. With that amount of use, I would only get about 12 hours of battery life from my Droid 1.
