HTC Desire :: Very Poor Network Reception
May 30, 2010
Since having the HTC desire I have noticed that my Vodafone reception is very poor. I am sure it has something to do with the phone because I never had the problem with Sonyerikson. Now overtime I have no network I have to turn off HTC desire completly and turn it back on to have network, which works.

I used to get my battery to last from 8am to about 10pm at night with it in the red zone. Recently though I have been working more from home and now have an airave and connect to the wifi network. Now all of a sudden when I go to bed I'm over half maybe even 3/4 of the battery is left.
My thinking is some of the battery drain may be caused by poor reception. For those of you with battery issues or issues on some days and not others, look at how much reception your getting in addition to use and radios and all that. Maybe the problem is sprints network.

When i m indoors, if I switch to GSM only mode, the reception is excellent. But when I m on WCDMA mode, then the reception drops alarmingly to near zero. At the same spot, a Nokia E51 shows near full strength signal. If I move towards the door, the reception improves. Does the desire have issues with indoor reception? Or is it just my handset?

poor signal reception been fixed yet? I'm interested in buying either a new sim free desire, x10, or a blackberry bold 9700. Leaning more towards the desire, but the only thing holding me back is the poor reception problems people have been experiencing. I'm on orange, and based in the east midlands, UK. Not had bad reception in my area with other phones in the past, so if got the desire and did have problems, it would annoy me to say the least

Is anyone else experiencing poor Bluetooth reception? Have my wireless bluetooth headset that I love so much. On my Samsung I could walk two rooms away and it would be fine. On my EVO I get constant reception problems. If I step more than 5 feet from the phone its awful. Even walking around with the phone in my pocket its just awful. What the hell is the deal with the EVO and its reception problems?

I work in a location where the phone is without a signal about 35%-40% of the time. Naturally, my battery suffers terribly and I often need to charge it sometime during the work day to ensure it makes it until bedtime. Due to firewall/security issues, my phone is my only way to get to my Gmail. I also spend a lot of time on the move, from meeting to meeting, so it's advantageous to leverage my Exchange sync. Typically, I'm able to get emails right away, as the signal drops in and out frequently as opposed to being completely unavailable for long stretches of time.
I guess what I'm looking for is a way to reduce consumption without reducing connectivity. I'm already shutting off GPS. I'm leaving Wifi on for now, as I've got rules on things like Tasker and Setting Profiles that rely on finding specific access points. What I've really been thinking about is having a Tasker setup that turns the Mobile Data Network on and off periodically (say, 1 minute on and 10 minutes off). Does that sound like a viable option? I've heard folks say turning the data network off can cause sync issues, but I'm hoping that turning it back on periodically will solve/prevent all that. Anyone have experience with something like this? Any other ideas for power savings, especially as it may be relevant to a low-signal environment? I also make sure I'm on auto-brightness and am more aggressive about screen timeouts.

I have really poor reception with my DroidX and I am trying to figure out if it is the phone or verizon. I used to have an iphone on AT&T and while I had low bars I could at least make consistent phone calls. With the DroidX and verizon I have 0 bars and only have service when the wind blows my direction (or so it seems). Any advice on how I could boost my signal? I had verizon 4 years ago and it was great so I am not sure what the problem is.

I got the update this morning and today I am getting really Shity service at home. I used to get great service at home. My wife also has an epic and she got the update this morning too. We put our phones next to each other and she has full bars. I am lucky if I get one. It looses service constantly and is looking for service. Could the update have done this, maybe I just never notcied. Could I have a bad radio?

I just picked up the Droid Eris and am having serious reception issues when at work, which is here I am most of the time. I upgraded from an LG Chocolate, and did miss or have a dropped call for 2 years. After getting the Droid Eris I missed 3 calls the first day with the phone in my office. I receive adequate 1x coverage, but only spotty 3g coverage. My co-workers all have iPhones and have the same issue, but they have the ability to manually turn off the 3g, which then allows them to send and receive calls and texts without any problems using the at&T 1x network. Is there a way (or an app) that allows a user to turn off the 3g and only receive 1x coverage for the Droid Eris? I don't think turning off the mobilenetwork accomplishes this goal, but would like to know for sure.

I live in an area where I had GREAT reception on my Blackberry... since switching to the Incredible, I have a really hard time getting a good signal in my house. Calls drop when I'm talking to someone and the person on the other end of the phone fades in and out when I'm on a call.

For the past couple weeks my phone has been acting very strange and has been getting pretty poor recpetion. I run BB.4 and P3Droid 1.0ghz and 3e baseband. I have tried .41 & .43 and did not get any better reception. Basically the issue is i get 3g for a while and all of a sudden i get 1x where i should have full 3g. If i shut my phone off and turn back on I then get 3g service back. I ultimately noticed it while in Chicago and i had terrible service when everyone else had great service. In Chi i went through all the basebands with no luck. Yesterday I restored back to rooted 2.1 by Pete and i still had a issue. So what i am looking for is there any settings i should look for that maybe off. I doubt its a common issue and i want to look at everything before calling to get it swapped out for a like new droid.

I live in a rural area and have sporadic reception in my house, and work in a large building with dead spots. When I am in areas without reception and a friend texts me, I will not receive it. When I get reception again a few minutes later, my texts will not go through automatically.
From what I understand, the way SMS messages work they will send immediately, and if they do not go through they will piggyback on a different connection. So Verizon will not try resending them to you until it is good and ready, even if you have had reception since then. In my case today I got 3 texts 80 minutes late.I called Verizon tech support earlier with this problem and after describing to him everything, his only solution was to always leave my droid by a window and never have it near me................

Im coming from an HTC Touch hear in Dallas and after a great week with the Moment I am concerned about the radio in this thing. My issue is that I get NO bars at work near DFW Airport. Iv updated the PRL and the latest maint release but the thing still doesn't connect while at work. Any idea for fixing the sensitivity so I can make calls at work? I am sooo tied of hearing the ?Lack of Signal beeps? all day long. Vz droid my co-worker has is solid 4-3 and he laughs at me as he says it must be his coverage map blocking my signal.
I though Sprint could connect on VZ s network?

I am currently on a new client where it's constantly on 1X and occasionally switches back to 3G with 0 bars, then back to 1X. I got in to work at 8:30 am and by 5:00 the battery was at 30%. Battery Manager shows Cell Standby as 21% of the battery usage. I had about a 15 minute call this morning (presumably on 1X, I didn't check) and have not used the Internet at all for the rest of the day. This is obviously unacceptable. On my Droid Eris, there was a way to turn off the Mobile Network and use only 2G/1X for calls. I have researched and not found a similar option for the Droid X (Why would Motorola leave this out?) Does anyone know what my options are? I've heard you can go into the #*#*INFO*#*# menu and set it to 2G only, then restart, but that would be a pain to do every morning.

Rooted droid, using Froyo Kangerade V5.0.9.
I was sitting next to my friend who just got a droid and is unrooted. I was explaining how great everything was, but he was skeptical to root as most of us have been.
I wanted to make a phone call so I picked up my droid, but I went between 0 bars to half a bar and had a weak to no signal. I dialed the number, but the call wasn't going through. He, on the other hand had 3-4 bars consistently. I was pretty embarrassed when I had to ask him to use unrooted droid. I even tried *228 but my reception was still poor.
How can you explain this? More importantly how can I get "more bars" and a stronger signal.

I just found out something today: my reception is exceptionally poor with the Tattoo. I have poor reception anyway But I found out that if I stand near a wall in my office an tile my head at 55 degrees, then I get 'ok' reception (exaggerating) But this is with other phones. The Tattoo doesn't want to know And I have to move to somewhere where there is a much stronger reception

Does anybody have experience with network extenders? Would it help preserve battery life in poor signal areas?
Also, has anybody used Sprint's Airave network extender? I get terrible service here in college, but back home (Suburban Chicago) Sprint has great 3G and even WiMax. My 2-year with Sprint is up in October, and with the EVO 4g coming out (+WiMax back home) I was wondering if an Airave would help my reception woes during the school year.

I just got the droid incredible a few days ago and have had be reception since where I only get like one or two bars while in town and barely one at my house. I took it to the verizon store in town and they said this county area has the best 3G coverage you can get and can not figure out why I am getting such low bars. They need a roaming update thing twice on my phone but it did nothing. They said I would have to take it into a service station. I was hoping I could find a fix for it on here before doing so since my phone is rooted. also I notice that the antenna is at the bottom of the phone and when holding it there, the reception drops even more.

I've had some very poor reception in some areas in the UK where my operator's signal-strength map suggests a very good signal should be received. Sometimes just moving the phone from one desk to another at work allows it to receive a signal!
I discussed this with my phone operator and they are suggesting that a new replacement SIM card may resolve the problem and are sending me a new one. When I bought my HTC Desire a few months ago I just reused the SIM from my old phone and it is a few years old.
My question is this: could an old or faulty SIM card cause wild fluctuations in reception signal strength?

I had my desire only a few months and Im having a few problems. Even though it shows full signal I lose calls halfway through people try calling me only to get my answer phone but phone is next to me showing full signal. If I try and use the internet it won't upload pages unless I put wi-fi on. It's not where I live as husband on same network and his phone is fine. What should do.

Had the Desire for a week and it is driving me mad. I liked listening to BBC radio 2 walking to work - Chris Evans made me laugh and woke me up gently but since the Desire, the reception is intolerable and I don't bother (prev. Sony K800i was great). Have read and searched all I can on tinternet and although others have similar, I have yet to see a fix - I have today emailed HTC but wonder if anyone has found an answer? I have seen mention of thinner headset cables are better (HTC supply is thick) - anyone found a replacement headset that improves this please - you truly would make my week. I am still in the return period but doubt that would work, so would rather find a fix. Other bits 'n bobs I have found which may help you and balance my question are 1. don't use Advanced task killer to close the radio - it doesn't shut it down properly and you can't reuse the radio - if you get this, turn the phone off fully and then it shall work. 2. I like the 3G watchdog app to stop me going over my usage - give it a go 3. Shopsavvy is cool and works really well to scan a barcode and find better prices - Pkt Auctions Ebay app in contrast has never worked for me and seems useless in the wake of Shopsavvy 4. You may well need a new in car handsfree kit - A2DP requirement I think it is - my 2 old ones weren't up to it but a new Parrot kit for 50 does the job and can call from speech etc. 5. The best surprise was the navigation tool - basically satnav which works better than my dedicated satnav - the lady's voice is a little annoying but she gives far better detailed descriptions of the next turn and finds satellites quicker then my old and now redundant machine - give it a go! Anyway, I'll shut up as no doubt you are dying to tell me which headset does make my Desire FM work.

I have an unbranded unaltered HTC Desire Android Version 2.2 baseband Version 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20 Kernel Version 2.6.32.15-gf9c0527 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1 Build number 2.09.405.8 CL218634 release-keys Software number 2.09.405.8 Where do I start, bought it from CPW in May, no issues, no problems no reboots. Upgraded to Froyo last week and its doing my head in. I use the Google Navigation a lot, problem is now it keeps rebooting. Today I entered an address and it gained then lost GPS reception, took ages to get it back, then when it did it only lasted a few minutes then rebooted the Desire. I restarted navigation and it may pick up GPS then few seconds later reboot itself again, drove me nuts, to the point where I gave up and used OVI maps on my Nokia. On the way home 120 mile journey, entered the address and navigation was ok for about 20 minutes then it kept rebooting. Occasionally it would navigate for a couple of minutes then reboot itself, this again drove me nuts.
I then tried to eliminate possibilities and drove 1 hour with the Desire and Google maps on, but not navigating i.e just showing my movement on the road, I kept scrolling the screen to make sure the arrow was always shown, it worked faultless, no reboots data was downloading ok to form the route maps. I then put the navigation back on, and low and behold started rebooting and loosing GPS reception. This is driving me mad, as I need the navigation, everything else works ok with no issues. Is anyone else having any problems? HTC deny there is any known faults on the Desire, I am not going to put up with this, it is not fit for purpose. I think it must be software not hardware, but I am not sure, any help advice gratefully received.

This morning when I accidentally turned on then off again the Airplane Mode my phone came up with the SIM card error & had no reception whatsoever. I've tried all the turn the phone off, then on & battery out things etc, even a hard reset but still nothing. I've called Orange & the technical guy called me back but we didn't get anywhere then he said he'd have a word with his technical technical team & call me back.....I'm still waiting. He did say its more than likely a Android glitch. Any ideas what I can do to fix the problem? I don't have Orange Phone Insurance & have had the phone 2 months I hope they'll fix it for free...fingers crossed.

Love love love my Desire. Few little problems here and there (Music Genre, Battery life etc) but the one main thing that is really bugging me is, that if I lose reception (I live in a area with lots of valleys), it will never regain reception even if I enter a town centre or City. I always have to either switch Airplane mode on then off. Or more often than not, turn the phone off completely and switch it back on, where it then finds reception straight away.

I was using Advanced Task Killer Free and found a running app called poor, unsure what it was so used ATKF to kill it but after checking a little while later it was running again, killed it again and again checking a few minutes it was running again. Becoming increasingly concerned I've now uninstalled every application (a number of them had updated) except ATKF and Google maps (which also updated recently) but it still seems to start itself.

I use to own a palm pre before I switched to HTC EVO. I think the evo is a great phone but the two things I missed so much about my palm pre is the camera and the sound qualities.
The EVO is said to use 8MP for its camera but honestly the camera quality is nothing compare to the palm pre. Simply put, the camera and the sound output on the evo sucks.
You can clearly notice the difference between the pictures I took using the pre and the evo. The pre gives far better picture quality and also better sound output. I always enjoy plays my sounds or using pandora on my pre, but with the evo the different is the case. The sound quality with the evo is horrible even when plugged to good speakers.
I bearly take picture with the evo because I am used to good picture quality with my pre.
I have had the evo for less than two weeks and i am seriously thinking of returning it because of these two issues.
I really want to know, is this poor picture and poor sound qualities a thing with the evo in general or is it just with the particular evo that I got.

I seem to have a poor signal alot of the time. 1 or 2 bars is not unusual in places my old phone used to have full signal strength. It went on roaming for some reason in the shopping centre today. It is always on H or nothing. My old phone used to drop onto edge and GPRS if it didn't get a H signal. And what about 3G? An all singing all dancing phone is no good if it cant perform its main function.
