HTC Desire :: Watching Movies Kills My Battery - Type Of Video File That Consumes Less Power?
Aug 25, 2010
Watching a 30 min episode of a tv show, uses 25% of my Desire's battery life. Watching a 90 min movie uses 75% (funnily enough!)
Obviously, powering the lovely screen uses up a lot of juice. Just wondering whether there is any particular type of file that is more CPU intensive to decode and run, than others?
I currently use Mpeg 4 format. The program I use to convert my avi's to mpeg4, gives me different quality level options.
Would it make a difference to power consumption if I was to convert the avi's to a lower quality mpeg4 file?

I'm going on a trip soon and wanted to put some movies on my phone. I found some DVD ripping software, ripped The Dark Knight as MPEG4, and was thrilled when I saw the picture- it looked fantastic. Then I put my headphones in. Where's my sound?
Before this, I had the movie The Book of Eli on my computer, MPEG4. I put that on my phone- sound, but not video. Converted to H.263, got both, but video was terrible quality. Near unwatchable. Should I try converting to a different format? I mean, there has to be some way to get good quality video.

I was just curious if anyone has tested the battery life with watching movies. I was wondering what kind of drain an hour long mp4 video would have on the battery.

Not yet got my new Desire but I've watched several youtube clips showing fast and smooth browsing performance; I'm guessing these clips were showing phones connected over wifi. What's the browsing experience like on normal 3g when out and about? Is watching streaming video feasible for example?

When playing music or watching video using the headphones that came with it, there is a lot of crackling and hissing. If you go back to the home screen, there is a high pitched whistling sound (almost as if you've placed a microphone next to a speaker and are getting feedback as a result.) I can't seem to get any FM radio stations either. I've tried three different sets of headphones as well as the set bundled with the Desire and all have the same problem. Is this a known issue or should I phone O2 and get it replaced.

I watch quite a few .mp4's on my Desire, and I'll really like to turn off the the backlight behind the physical buttons if possible, not so much to aid battery life but for the factor they are a bit annoying if you're watching something in the dark. Is this possible? My device isn't rooted.

I've got quite a lot of movies and videos but some play better than others on my Android Tablet and some just don't play at all.
I there is a preferred file format for movies and videos because there are too many to choose from?
I just don't know which of the many options I should consider from AVI, Xvid, Divx, H.264 and any other flavour you can think of.

I have a HTC one S, stock, not rooted.
I have disabled everything twitter related, however, in better battery stats, the process "tpd" is still showing and using a fair bit of my battery, what is going on and how to truly disable twitter?
I have snowstorm and sense weather syncing every few hours and gmail push as usual, I haven't got anything else syncing.
Disabled most of sense apps apart from gallery, dialer/people, messaging, weather and a few other things.

Is the only way to watch HD movies or tv shows is by ripping the dvd to the phone? Is there any sites or apps that allows you to watch tv or movies online in HD? I see blockbuster has an app to watch movies on the Droid X. Anyone know if there's one for Netflix? I hava an app that allows me to connect to my netflix but it doesn't allow me to watch my movies online.

Well, I'm about to get my first Android phone but being able to watch avi. movies or convert them while watching them is a deal breaker for me. On the iPod touch/iPhone there is an app called Air Video that allows you to watch movies stored on your computer through the wireless network. You can either convert them or watch them live while they are being convert. The quality of the videos are very good.
I don't like converting avi. to mp4 on my computer because it takes a long time and it also reduces the quality of the movie and makes the movie very blurry on my phone/ipod touch. So anyways, I was wondering if there was an app that is similar to Air Video and another plus would be being able to do all this over the 3G network instead of on WiFi. The reason why I ask this is because the WiFi network in our house is shoddy and the 3G network seems to be so much faster compared to our WiFi.

So I tried googling and poking through a ton of different forums (this one, nexusone forums, etc.) regarding formatting video to be used on the DInc. The general consensus was to use Handbrake with the iPhone settings to convert video. But that was taking forever. What is weird is that I bought the Sandisk 32GB card, and I put a number of copies of the new season of Dr Who on it (all avi's, unsure what codecs were used for it though). They're all smaller than the native resolution of the phone (something like 366xsomething). But neither Meridian nor DoubleTwist can play them. I wasn't sure if it was card related, so I moved the files off the card onto the phone (which took forever, btw) and it still would freeze up opening the video. So I'm guessing I'm still going to have to convert the files, which is fine - but does anyone know of software better than Meridian to do so?
It's funny, I watched the entirety of Clerks on my LG Voyager (after converting it to 3gp or whatever that weird format was), and doing that seemed simpler than watching videos on my DInc. As an aside, we were watching the iPhone4 vs EVO video on my fiance's MotoDroid, standing outside a VzW store talking it up with an old co-worker of mine from when I used to work there, and the video froze. She shut it off, then turned it back on, and it started power cycling (M loop, whatever you want to call it). I spent 3 hours digging through forums looking for a way to recover her phone without factory reset, couldn't get anything to work, so we factory reset and it continued to power cycle. Totally bricked. Anyone know if this is normal?
We already ordered a replacement phone for her, as it was stock to begin with. Just find it rather weird, especially since it had happened shortly after we installed the latest version of LauncherPro on her phone. I guess the inner-troubleshooter in me is determined to figure out the cause-- especially if LauncherPro and/or YouTube interacted funny, I thought it'd be a really useful thing to give to the developers.

I was wondering if you guys have been able to watch movies on the fascinate? The one thing Samsung is doing, is the media hub which allows you to download movies to your galaxy s. Sadly android does not quite have that yet, you have to download, convert, transfer, so i was wondering if you guys had other options, or if you were excited for the media hub coming with froyo.

I know that a tablet is best used via the touch screen, however I intend to connect my Android Tablet to the TV to watch movies and TV shows from the comfort of the sofa.I've just bought a wireless mouse which works with my Tablet, that is until I want to watch movies or TV shows.
While sat on the sofa, several meters from the TV and Tablet I can control the Tablet with my wireless mouse. No great shakes there but my problems start when I want to watch movies or TV shows. If I watch anything that I captured with my camera or Tablet I can control the aps by bringing up menus so that I can press pause, play fast forward or rewind.
However when I want to watch a movie or TV show I can not find a way to bring up a menu so that I can select pause, play forward or rewind. The only option I get is that when I right click I am kicked out of the movie/TV show and back to the general menu of all my available movies and TV shows.
why I can access playback menus for home produced video but I can't with movies or TV shows?

I found a product called Clone DVD mobile which I think will do this but do I need to download a program on the droid to view it? Are there any steps available for downloading files to the droid and how to view them?

It's been widely reported that the X can only output video via HDMI that was recorded using it's internal camera. Many have speculated that this is due to the non-implementation of HDCP on the HDMI port. I have found that this is untrue. I took some video, compressed it to .3gp (which is Droid's native video codec) in Sorenson Squeeze to 854 x 480 (Droid's screen resolution), copied it into the Droid's Video Gallery and played it out on a 37" HD monitor. It looked ok -- but it was only 480p.
Then I took the same video, compressed it to .3gp in Sorenson Squeeze to 1280 x 720 (Droid's HDMI output resolution limit), copied it into the Droid's Video Gallery and played it out on the same 37" HD monitor. And it looked very good -- as it was 720p. Finally, just for the hell of it, I took the same video, compressed it to .3gp in Sorenson Squeeze to 1920 x 1080, copied it into the Droid's Video Gallery and it would not play out at all. Not a surprise -- as the decoder in the X is known to not handle 1080p.
The key to success seems to consist of 3 parts:
1. Do not let the Droid convert the video upon import when prompted only select "No, Just Copy".
2. Also, if you are encoding to 1280 x 720 (720p) you must convert to .3gp at a combined bitrate (audio + video) of no higher than 1.5 Mb/s. In my tests, the X could not playback bitrates that were higher that 1.5Mb/s.
3. Finally, remember that the Droid's SD card file format is FAT32 so files cannot not exceed 2GB.
It is worth noting that Sorenson Squeeze is an expensive compression tool that does multipass encoding. I'm sure there's open source encoding software in the wild that will convert video to .3gp but I kinda doubt it will be multipass. Regarding runtime, it's worth repeating that I tested 1.5 Mb/s to find out what the upper limit was for external HD viewing. To be honest, the video quality would probably be perceived as quite "watchable" to a number of people 1 Mb/s.
If I were traveling and wanted to have some movies on hand and I WAS NOT sure if I'd ever be jacking-into an external monitor. I'd go for a MUCH, MUCH lower bitrate and resolution -- especially for display on a 854 x 480 4.3" screen. However, if I knew I was going to be largely watching on an external HD monitor. I'd go for the 1.5Mb/s maximum. So, you're probably wondering about the effect of that FAT32 2GB file limit: 2GB = 17,179,869,184 bits
At 1.5Mb/s: 1.5Mb/s = 1,500,000 bits/s
17,179,869,184 bits divided by 1,500,000 bits = 11,453 Seconds
11,453 seconds = 190 Minutes
190 Minutes = 3 Hours 10 Minutes
And at 1Mb/s:
1Mb/s = 1,000,000 bits/s
17,179,869,184 bits divided by 1,000,000 bits = 17,179 Seconds
17,179 seconds = 286 Minutes
286 Minutes = 4 Hours 46 Minutes
So, you can see that from a Feature Film point of view the FAT32 2GB limit is not an issue due to Droid's apparent maximum bitrate cap of 1.5Mb/s. From a storage volume point of view, I purchased a 32GB Micro SD Card for $99 with the phone. And that 32GB card should be able to store 50 Hours 40 Minutes of video at the highest bitrate of 1.5Mb/s. Which, at an average of 2 hours per Feature Movie, equates to 26 movies.

I'm thinking of getting the HTC desire when it releases in the US and I know it has already in Europe. I'm one of those people that would use the phone for internet, texting, probably not emailing.I'm interesting in what you guys' batter life is.Like if you had 3g off and all those battery saving tips.Like manual switching 3g on when needed etc.Since I want an accurate time to go by because I'm going to do the exact thing when I get mine.Using battery saving tips for max.As well if any hardcore power saving iphone users can post their times as well since I can't find anything on the web relating to that.
