HTC Desire :: Google Contacts Not Syncing Correctly
Sep 4, 2010
HTC Desire. Google Contacts on PC (and laptop) and phone. These used to sync okay between each media. Whatever I changed on the pc/Laptop, would be reflected on the phone, and whatever I changed on the phone, would be reflected on the pc/Laptop. For the last week or so this has not been happening. Whether I change, add, or delete, on the pc/laptop or mobile phone, these changes are not reflected on the other media. The Calendar still syncs okay between the phone and pc/laptop. Now, is this a phone issue? A Google issue? A sync issue?

I seem to be having a sync issue with my Droid. When I add a contact to my phone, it doesn't sync into "My contacts" in Gmail; it'll sync into "All contacts". So, a couple of questions:
1) How can I get the phone to add new contacts created on my Droid into "My contacts" in Gmail?
2) I'm trying to understand the point of "All contacts". Why does Gmail want to keep a list of anyone that I've ever sent an email to? Otherwise, it'll be simple enough to just merge the two groups and call it a day.(Note: When I bought my Droid I did NOT have the VZW sales person transfer my contacts or any data from my old Blackberry to my Droid. I used Google Sync on my BB and synced my contacts from my BB to Gmail, then when I got the Droid, it automatically pulled my contacts from Gmail.)(FWIW, yes, I did a search and found two great threads: http://androidforums.com/support-troubleshooting/15042-how-do-i-push-droid-contacts-back-gmails-my-contacts.html and http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/15069-contacts-dont-really-synchronize.html but I have a different situation than most of those guys and I'd actually prefer to sift through and merge a couple of contacts from "All contacts" to "My contacts" every once in a while than deal with a backup and factory reset.)

My wife's phone - which is a ZTE Blade running 2.2 - is losing it's favorites in the contacts manager each time it syncs to Google Contacts.
I looked up her Google Contacts [URL] and there is no "Starred in Android" group, as it should be. I think it should be automatically created when she fovorites a contac in her phone. But instead, it deletes the starring of the contacts in the phone each time it syncs.

I cleaned up my contact list, rearranged and merged a few etc etc but now those changes are not trickling down to my phone over wifi or 3g. It has been a week and still no luck. Even if I manually sync, I still do not see the changes...

First night I got my evo, my first android phone, I was just going over the settings, seeing what control I had in the OS etc. I went into running applications and clicked on gmail and forced it to stop ("until you start it again" from what it said). Since then I have not been able to get push gmail to my evo. I've cleared the data and cache from manage applications to both gmail storage (or something) and gmail. How to get true push email again!
2nd question: I transferred my IPhone contacts into a .csv that I uploaded on my gmail contacts. I synced them from my gmail to my evo. But everytime I go into phone, it only shows me 3-4 contacts compared to the 300+ I synced from my gmail. How can I transfer them from my gmail account, onto my phone?

Not sure if this is because I'm rooted, since I'm pretty sure I did that around 9/5. My calendar and mail sync perfectly, but the contacts section tells me it is experiencing problems. I'm running fresh ROM latest with netarchy kernel.

I sync my contacts with Google. OK, how exactly do I do this? People have said, sign on to google and it's all automatic.
First of all, I'd like some verification that my Contacts have been sync'ed before I shut down my existing phone and fire up a new one. I cannot find where -- with my phone -- that I can view my Contacts on Google's website. When I go from my PC, I can clearly see in GMail that my phone Contacts are NOT there at all.
Second, with the Gmail app on the phone, I cannot find where you can view and manage Contacts like you can on the PC view.

All of my Gmail contacts are not syncing to my phone. I have tried to manually sync over and over and it is not working. I am looking at my Gmail contacts online and comparing to my phone and there are at least 3 with phone numbers missing from my phone.

my google calendar and my gmail sync fine, but contacts gets the spinning wheel that never stops. Is there any way to fix this without rebooting and wiping everything off of my phone? How do you even reboot anyway? Other than this issue (I'm on 2.1, not rooted or anything) everything on the phone works just fine.

Well, google is to efficient. My contacts on the Fascinate has synced with Google and includes everyone I have ever contacted through Gmail. My Gmail and Google Voice both include a more limited list of contacts and associated groups. How do I sync this list with my Fascinate?

When I got my phone replaced the guy at the verizon store didn't wait long enough for my phone to sync contacts, so he took the contacts from the old phone and put them on my new one, then google synced my contacts so I had 2 of them all. I went through and deleted all the doubles, tried to sync a few times and gmail wouldn't change, so I went to gmail and merged all the doubles so everything was perfect, but my phone wouldn't sync the contacts from gmail. So finally I just manually added the ones I needed to my phone.
A few days later gmail finally updated and now has half my normal contacts(only what was on my phone). I saved a backup of my old contacts from gmail, so I can get all my contacts back on my gmail account, but how do i make it so my phone get the contacts from gmail? Basically I want to delete all the contacts on my phone and save the ones from gmail on it, but it seems that the phone is "in charge" by that I mean gmail copys what contacts are in the phone, instead of the phone copying from gmail.

When I try to sync my contacts with Google it always says an error with sync, something like sync is down. My calendar syncs fine but my contacts have never been able to sync since I had my phone in November.

Just got my greasy hands on a HTC Hero and loving it. I have used HTC to transfer my Outlook contacts to the phone as a one-off but even though I have "Sync Contacts" enabled (Home->Settings->Data Sync->Google->Contacts) on the phone I don't see these contact details when I log into Gmail on my Win PC and click contacts? Incidentally my calendar syncs from Hero to Gmail/calendar perfectly.

For some reason my Google contacts are syncing all the time. Every time I check when they synced last its always 3 minutes prior to my check time. It really seems like it is killing battery life, is there a way to set it to only sync once a day or something?

My wife upgraded from her Eris to the Incredible. She couldn't remember her gmail password, so we couldn't just transfer her contacts. I opened a new gmail account for her, then activated her phone on my number. I tried to sync her Eris with google, with the idea that she could sync with her Incredible. Unfortunately, the contacts won't sync.

There have been a lot of threads on this issue but I have 2 additional queries which I have not seen noted before. Firstly, why when I have set up my Gmail contacts on my computer into 8 groups do only 4 groups appear on my phone after synching? Secondly, is there anyway that the Google contacts can be rearranged so that the surname comes first - this can be done for phone contacts but does not appear possible for Google contacts?

I currently have phone pulling down all my Google contacts that generally consist of name smile and number. The incredible also links these contacts with my Facebook and so adds info to these contacts such as additional numbers, birthdays etc etc. What I want is this additional contact info now on my phone to uploaded to Google. For example I have a Google calendar with peoples birthdays on it and I would like it to have all my contacts birthdays from favebook.I would have imagined this should happen automatically but alas it is not so.

My google contacts do not seem to be syncing. The contacts I enter on the android that are new do not show up in my gmail account under contacts. I figured this out the hard way when 2 new numbers did not show up after a clean wipe a week ago. Only the 2 new ones were missing and the starred in android doesn't show accurate contacts, missing 4 that are in my main contact section but starred in the phone by me.

Dropped my Samsung S2 into water and it was not at all salvageable. To my shock I wasn't using a micro SD nor are my data as SYNCED at I thought they were - basically I lost all my contact numbers. I borrowed another S2 so I'm still using Android.
My question is, in order not to lose all my painfully re-built-in-progress contacts, how do can I save numbers that will be synced to my gmail account? here's my actual question:
I was asked where to save the new entries I put in, thinking in terms of syncing I chose to save to google. HOWEVER, google synced with the existing contacts i have with GMAIL. I.e. I can't locate a friend's contact card without having to dig through a WHOLE list of email addresses, e.g. some random inquiry email address that was a one off and i will NEVER use again.
HOW can i separate the two? My objective: save contacts somewhere which can be autosynced so my contacts can be retrieved in case phone dies again/to make it available for syncing on any new device/just as a reassuring back up - WITHOUT mingling them with gmail contacts (i.e. pure email addresses not phone numbers) .
Another observation, if you are still reading, a friend sent me some contact cards via whatsapp, and despite having chosen to save contacts by default to google (instead of sim/SD), those contact cards are saved on the phone. What's my best option? Thinking of getting S4 and seriously, manually putting everything in again is unthinkable, almost an insult to smartphones...
If i may side trek further, when i lost all my data, my calendar events were the only thing I have "sync-saved". For whatsapp history (from where ppl who thought i used an iphone said) it is saved on icloud so all the conversations will be kept intact AND from whatsapp u can make out a lot of the numbers. Instead for android there's not syncing with a cloud for whatsapp, now I have fired up whatsapp again I get these "Shell" group chats with no history and just several numbers which i dunno who's who. If android users can benefit from background saving of whatsapp history ONLINE (and not inside the phone i.e. like me lost when sth abrupt happens?)

Is it best to store your contacts on your sim card, your phone or via Google?
Also, how easy will it be to sync or copy my phone contacts to my PC? Just as a back up more than anything -to make things easier when I get a new phone.
I'm not too bothered about calendars etc, as the missus does that for me! I don't think I've ever used a calendar on a mobile phone or computer in my life!
My primary e-mail address is a hotmail address. Is it possible to have this on the Desire? My understanding is that it's possible, but not for "push" e-mail? Eg. I'd have to check it manually in the mail app?
I do have a Google e-mail address for the Market etc

I just got the HTC Desire and I like it a lot - except for one thing: It is really awful at handling contacts. I have 250 friends on Facebook and 200 contacts in my gmail contacts and some on my SIM card as well. When I want to send an SMS I really only need access to those on my SIM card, but I get all the information from both gmail, SIM card and Facebook. Some people have 5 entries: One from SIM card, one cell number from Facebook, one home number from Facebook, one email from Facebook and one email from gmail. It is really cluttering up my list and makes it very confusing to send an SMS. Strange thing is: When I enter my "people" list I have set it up so it only shows people on my SIM card.
How can I make "Search People" only show the information from my SIM card? Of course I could just delete my Facebook account from "Accounts and Sync", but that still leaves the gmail information.

Go to menu>settings>applications>manage applications>contacts storage and then delete the data. I backed up my Google contacts on line first by exporting the file just in case. (Not a bad idea anyway, this way you'll have an Excel database with all your contact in case anything should ever happen to your phone). Then resync. It will all go back in without a problem.
I noticed that the file is about 1/2 the size now and I think that's because I didn't sync up all the Facebook data back yet (no photos matching to people, etc.). but I think I'll make sure it all syncs continuously again first, then try adding back in the Facebook info. So far two of the problems were solved by deleting old data (I didn't want to do a factory reset after getting 2.1 just where I wanted it except for the few glitches).

I have a long list of Google Contacts and only want to sync a subset of them to my Droid Eris. So, I created a "Phone" group in Google Contacts. Then on my Droid Eris (back when it was running 1.6) I was able to go "People" -> "Groups" -> "Menu" (or something like that) and select the "Phone" group as the only group from Google Contacts that would sync with my Droid Eris. Worked perfectly.
Now, after the 2.1 update I no longer have that option! I thought, "Maybe the option controls migrated somewhere else." I tried going "Menu" -> "Settings" -> "Accounts & Sync" -> "Google" and found nothing there as well. How can I just sync the "Phone" group from my Google Contacts with my Droid Eris which is now running 2.1?

So, I have been playing around with contacts and google calendar syncing on my Droid, and I love it. I also know that it uses a very small amount of battery.
Looking at Spare Parts and the battery information, google uses MAYBE a minute a day for syncing, which is absolutely nothing.
Anyways, anyone know how often it syncs? Seems to be every 12-24 hours.
