HTC Desire :: Favorite Text Input Style / Swift Key
Aug 11, 2010
Just wanted to start a new thread so that people can discuss which their favorite text input is. I'm using slideit keyboard at the moment and love it as its so easy just like swype. Thought I would let people know that swift key kb now supports the speech to text function as well, slideit does too. Which kb do you all prefer? Are there any others out there that are worth a try? Post your experiences here and your evaluations so that we can all make an informed choice.

I want a simply T9 texting app so I don't have to use both hands.I want to be able to use just one hand while in the car, instead of two hands to text.

Been using SwiftKey beta since Swype stopped working consistently and I got a notice this to upgrade to a final version (directly in advance of the Market release next week. It's definitely worth and it's learned my input habits so I hit just one button for most words. Just thought I'd let other users know.

First off I did the RUU update. I have no patience to wait for verzion and the OTA. Second my apologies if this has been asked before but i did try searching with no luck. I noticed that after updating, while the phone is charging the SD card is no longer available. I am charging via a wall outlet (not a PC) and it is a verizon adapter. Once you plug it in you can no longer use the SD card (which is needed by swiftkey) to make text suggestions. Is anyone seeing this or having an issue accessing their SD card while charging? Also as a side note, I can no longer push the menu key to unlock the phone. this one is kind of annoying...

I've got a text style defined in styles.xml. I'm trying to reference it from a layout. When I reference from the layout, it causes an exception upon inflation. If I use the style from java code, it works fine. Setting the individual styles on the TextView works fine too:

I have a string array and was trying to style certain parts of the text with tags like <b>, <i>, ... but it doesn't work.
The array looks like this:
CODE:................
The text is displayed in the textview like this: tTitel.setText(Html.fromHtml(Text[ii]));
I tried it without Html.fromHtml too but this had no effect. The styling tags do work if i use them directly in the code, like: tTitel.setText(Html.fromHtml("blabla<b>blabla</b>");
How to style the text in an array?

I see there is a TextAppearanceSpan available but no examples on usage. I just want to make the text bold and leave everything else unchanged - is there perhaps a simpler way to do this programmatically?

I'm trying to make iPhone-style EditText element on android. The one that will have an additional clear button appear on the right after text input. Adding a new button is not a problem, but I'm a bit stuck with another thing.
A button occupies some space on the right part of EditText, and now characters display beneath the button. How to change maximum shown length of input for EditText? I want EditText width to be N pixels, and editable area to be N-M pixels.
EditText.setWidth changes width for whole edit box. EditText.setEllipsize should be the proper solution, but docs are empty, and as I see it truncates text based on some String value. Applying a LengthFilter cut's the input length to number of characters.

I'm creating a spinner in my layout xml files and setting an string array to this spinner.
If I change the textstyle of the spinner the text is not affected by the changes.
I read in the googlegroups that a spinner has no text and therefore the textstyle can not be changed and I have to change the style of the textview that is shown in the spinner. But how can I do that. Preferably in my xml file.

Does any of you know it is possible to disable the conversation style for text messages in the legend. I really prefer a separate in box and s separate box for my send messages. Most of the messages I send and receive are not conversations, so for me it isn't a good option for me. I already tried it with hand cent, but this also didn't have that option.

I have always been a Palm girl, and decided to move onto the HTC Hero.I downloaded handcent, and I am sort of confused on how it or the default text messaging works. Why is it when I send a text, and receive a text from someone else, they all wind up in the same chat.Do all incoming texts wind up in one chat style window?I know on Palm each text had its own window sort to speak. If I replied, then it became a "chat".My incoming from different people wind up in one window so I am reading different peoples replies in all one paragraph like chat.

I would like to start by saying that I am new to the android genre (I bought my eris 4 weeks ago) but I am not new to the smartphone industry. I have owned multiple blackberrys, which eventually led to the decision of buying the eris. Coming from blackberry I am used to "maintaining" my phone, i.e. closing apps, clearing caches. I make it a point to consistently use Advanced Task Killer on my device which was recommended to me by the VZW sales rep upon purchasing my phone. However, after the most recent OTA update I have started to experience significant lag and "soft resets." I recognize that the eris has an out of date processor, and it is foolish to expect that any phone will operate without some type of annoyance. With this being said, my phone lags to the point of user frustration. My best example of this occurred today, Dec 25. I was purging my SMS inbox from all the merry Christmas texts, and my phone consistently spent 3-5 seconds between the delete text screen, and returning to the inbox. I deleted 15 texts, and in this time the phone also managed to return to the HTC startup screen twice. In a given day I experience this soft reset upwards of 10-15 times, a major inconvenience for any type of phone user. Lastly, after receiving the update my phone has froze multiple times on the lock screen. It tends to happen when I recieve a text/e-mail, press the end button to unlock the screen and the phone freezes at the unlock screen. It is unresponsive to any button combinations, and any attempts to swipe the screen in all directions. So with my previously mentioned problems, I am coming here for advice.
A.) What can I do, aside from ATK, to aid my phone in a more swift and userfriendly experience?
B.) Could it be possible to have a "lemon"?

I've had an HTC Desire for a few months now, and I just can't get used to full keyboard touchscreen style text entry. I like old school phone keypad style T9 text entry - I find it much faster (well, once I've entered lots of extra words!) than a keyboard and like to be able to send texts with one hand.
However I'm not happy with the stock android keypad, and my phone has just received a new update that makes it EVEN WORSE.
For example, it appears to in fact be impossible to enter accented characters (e.g.). As I occasionally communicate in languages other than english this is horrendous. With the new update they've also removed the shortcuts to ! and ? and replaced them with the voice recognition button, a feature in Android which I have found to be totally pointless (most of the time after speaking something it just says 'processing' for ages, then either fails or comes up with nonsense. Far quicker to type! Whats the point?!?). It's also added some kind of auto correction which I can't work out how to turn off which will prioritise words that I haven't even typed because I guess it thinks thats a more popular word and I misspelled it and I then have to go into 'more words' to chose the bloody word I typed in to start with!
However it seems all the other alternative keyboards are more designed to replace qwerty. I tried SwiftKey for a little while and it's clever, but it's still all querty and I'm not sure I like all the autocorrection - often correcting something that WAS correct into something that isn't!
About to try HTC_IME once I've worked out how to install it, but are there any other phone-keypad-style text entry apps out there to replace the stock android? Just anything that works like, say, an old Nokia or Sony would be totally great. That can't be too much to ask can it?

That thing, you know, where it "guesses" which word you want to type? How do I turn it off? I hate it. Yesterday, instead of asking someone to email me. I asked them to enslave me. I don't care about the occasional typo. I want to completely eliminate that feature but I can't find it in the settings.

I was using xtrSense briefly right before I switched to KaosFroyo v31 and I must say I was very impressed with the responsiveness of xtrSense. That would be my first choice ROM for anyone wanting an Android 2.1 ROM with Sense.Since I switched to KaosFroyo I'm loving Android 2.2 (and missing my HTC sense weather widget,) however it's a good deal less responsive than xtrSense. I turned off JIT because I wanted to go the most stable route, and switched back to LauncherPro.Mostly I notice the reduced responsiveness when typing on the soft keyboard and when switching from portrait to landscape. What's the best way to improve responsiveness in KaosFroyo without overclocking more than "stock?"

I am new to touch screen keyboards, and the one on this eris works me every time. I was wondering if there is any way to set default input method as t9 for texting but still have qwerty as default for all else? If not maybe someone could direct me to a better keyboard? I tried sharpnote or whatever for a couple days and actually preferred the stock keys believe it or not!

A friend of mine has a Chinese branded HTC Tattoo. That phone has a really cool input method where you can "draw" the letters on the screen. The version I have seen handles English and Chinese characters transparently without needing to switch input methods. Does anyone know if this is downloadable as an app, or what this is?

Sometimes when I type it wont fill in whatever field that I am typing in whether its a text message, search, or web page. The dictionary will come up as if I am typing the word but no actual letters will have been typed. I've tried with both the stock keyboard and better keyboard but it wont work until I restart the phone.

LG Dare is a full touch screen phone. One of the input methods actually pulled up a regular dial pad, with letters, and it simulated old t9 predictive text. I have been very proficient with that for years and rather it to a full touch screen key board. Has anybody come across a feature or third party application that would allow me to do that?

I have an AutoCompleteTextView defined as the following inside a RelativeLayout,
<AutoCompleteTextView android:id="@+id/edit_tag"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:hint="@string/tag"
android:inputType="text"
android:imeOptions="actionNext" />
When I touch on a choice from the drop down list, instead of setting the text of this view to the one I chose, it clears the view as if no text has been inputted. I tried to debug this and walked through the execution of the program step by step. It seems to have been cleared at around line 123 in Looper.java, which I cannot see the source.

My biggest pet peeve about the Evo is how the landscape text input takes over the screen, leaving you unable to view new text messages or instant messages received while typing without minimizing the keyboard. This is also a problem when you want to submit a text or instant message and you have to constantly hide the keyboard to do so. Is there a way to stop this nonsense? Also I used to have the Droid X keyboard which I really liked, but it wouldn't work with Froyo - has a new version of that keyboard been released, or could anyone point me in the direction of a very similar keyboard (larger keys, no useless arrows on the right hand side) ?

Regarding the lack of Predictive Text or XT9 on certain applications: I contacted google with the following bug report:- Steps to reproduce the problem. Verizon Droid Eris (stock, 1.5 i think): tap the magnifying glass to search the web. use the 9-key phone pad method of text input.
What happened."XT9" text input is locked. only "ABC" or "abc" available. What you think the correct behavior should be. All android applications and functions that accept text input should support XT9 predictive texting for the 9-key phonepad and compact-qwerty. The google folks said the following: "Android does not contain a T-9 input method by default. Please report this bug to HTC, owners of that particular piece of software."And then HTC said the following: Hello Ben Thank you for contacting HTC technical support about the abc/xt9 being greyed out. I have checked on this for you and found that is how the device is set up when using these areas on the apps. There is no way of changing this and I do apologize for that. When entering google searches and also browser addresses predictive text is not available for input. If you have any other questions feel free to reply. You may also enjoy www.htcwiki.com, our customer-based forum, which has a plethora of information on HTC devices. I would also like to invite you to participate in a customer satisfaction survey located at HTC Online Survey.

I have an app I am working on that does some math on a few variables and outputs the answer. Well that's the plan anyway. Being a total n00b at Android & Java I am not sure of a couple of things.1) I have created text fields in the layout file for user to enter values. Instead of text fields should I use numerical value fields, if such a thing exists? 2) How can you convert from a text field to a numerical value and back again?

I'm eying the Vibrant as my first Android phone (yep, starting at the top), coming from a long line of Palm OS devices culminating with a Treo 680. So far I like most of what I see, with two caveats: The lack of camera flash (I've not had one before, but with a 5 MP camera it seems a waste to not have one) and the lack of a physical keyboard.
I've yet to meet an on-screen keyboard I liked, but I've not tried a 4" screen before. Any first impressions, especially from people used to physical keyboards? Good, bad, ugly? Honestly that's the main thing I'm worried about.
