I've unlocked the Telus version of the Desire and I'm now using a SIM card on the Bell network. However, the only way that I can access data is through WiFi. When it is turned off I can't access emails or the internet yet my data plan is working and Bell has input my IMEI into their system.

I've had my desire for around a month now & had no real problems with it, flashed it with a stock ROM initially & then rooted it a couple of days after the root was released. When I woke up this morning I was connected to my WiFi network but when I tried to load a webpage, nothing happens, it comes up with the stock 'Web page not available' page. I tried a couple of web pages but got the same response, I thought it might be my WiFi network but when I got to work, exactly the same thing happens. I can connect via GPRS when I disable the WiFi with no problem. I've been using Y5 Battery Saver for the past two weeks, not sure if that's relevant. Is this a standard error / known bug, how would I go about fixing this, not having WiFi is obviously a bit of pain!
OK, installed a Terminal emulator over 3G & ran a couple of commands, including dmesg. From the output of dmesg it looks like the WiFi connects but then something goes wrong, here's a brief transcript:
pfn: set ssid = ******
Link event
Link UP
Enter set packet filter
start to add pkt filter 101
wds: 0021 @ 01
qmi: wds: network stopped
rmnet_stop()
wds: 0022 @ ff
qmi: wds: DISCONNECTED
If this is any use, I'm happy to try other commands.

I was wondering if there's a way to stop mobile data being turned on when wifi is turned off? I usually have mobile data turned off (using Extended Controls widget) to conserve battery and I use wifi most of the time, so it's very annoying that mobile data comes on every single time I turn wifi off.

My HTC Desire (UK) has been find ever I had it, no issues whatsoever. Recently updated the Android software and ever since then I can only access the web/market etc when connected through wifi.
My signal bar simply shows bars whereas in the past it had either a G, 3G or H next to it, and I'm guessing this is linked into the problem.

I'm having to move networks from Virgin back to o2.
I'll be returning the Virgin Desire and just received the o2 Desire today.
Setting it up went well, accounts added etc. but I'm having trouble with the WiFi - I can't disable it, every time I do it switches itself back on - I'm assuming that's something to do with the o2 firmware and it wouldn't be a big deal if the WiFi worked properly
I set it to install all my apps, but wouldn't over Wifi, only over 3G, I can't browse the internet or check for software updates in settings... I've got 2 email accounts set up - Gmail & Exchange (just as I did on the other handset), and it's just told me it can't sync to the Exchange server now though it seems to have been fine so far...
Yet I've just sent myself a test email over WiFi successfully - it appeared straight away in the webmail and then back on the handset, so some part of it's working...

I'm wondering if on an android device there's a way to force it to keep open a wifi connection that is not used for data, for example to a Seagate Goflex Satellite (WiFi HDD) or eye-fi (WiFi SDHC) while also being simultaneously connected to 3G for data. Obviously connecting to 2 wifi connections is out of the question.

I decided to try the WiFi hotspot available through 2.2. GREAT! Actually worked quite a bit better than I thought it would. Only trouble is, ... now I'm back at home, it fails to connect to the home network.
+ Restarting phone
+ Re-entering password
+ Forgetting network + refinding
WiFi sees the network, says "Connecting", comes up "Failed to connect", "Scanning" and loops on that sequence. I know the router's working because this laptop is using it right now

I just signed up for these forums because soon I will be an HTC Desire owner in Canada. Having never owned a smartphone before I do have a few questions. The plan I intend on signing up for is the Telus Student 40 and that will come with only 100mb of data. Now I don't see myself being too data using heavy so I feel like I will be able to live with it. However I do have some questions regarding my data consumption.
1. Is it possible to completely stop all data usage by somehow disabling the data connection if I find myself reaching my limit?
2. What are ways to track my data usage to make sure I don't use too much data?
3. What are good ways to conserve data usage? I'm getting the feeling that there are some applications that will constantly be sending data back and forth updating themselves, is it possible to have these applications but stop them from constantly updating and only have them update when I want to access the application?.........

If "always on mobile data" is disabled, will this have any affect on programs that are set to auto sync with back ground data enabled(Face book, twitter etc)? I'm trying to work it out but lots of people say different things?

When I use WiFi, does that count as far as data usage on my cell phone plan? The plan Im on advertises unlimited everything but the data as conditions and I've gotten two notices from the company saying I'm excessively using data so now I turn on WiFi at work and home. Does the Wifi usage count as far as data usage goes?

I know, mobile data is automatically turned off by Android when connected to a wi-fi. Now, my phone is a nexus 4, and since I have limited storage, I use a wi-fi external hard drive, which means I am always connected to wi-fi on the road. Now, if I want to use mobile data while I'm connected to a wi-fi network, is there a way to make it work?

For example, I use Talkatone or Sipdroid for my phone calls so I don't want these apps to get briefly disconnected when i connect to a wifi network because i may miss an incoming call. Plus, since voice calls use such little data and I'm almost always have strong 4g signal, it seems like it would make sense to just keep calls on 4g all the time. It's also annoying if i'm at home in a call over wifi and need to go somewhere, then i have to call the person back.
I'm using an un-rooted Galaxy S3 t-mobile currently, but will probably root in the future if absolutely needed when i have the time to mess around with that (and when i'm not absolutely depending on this phone to be fully working following day).

I'm not sure if it's just me experienced this wired situation. I got TP-Link 108M wireless router at home and all my 4 PCs and 1 wireless cam connected to the router with no issues for 1.5 years. But ever since I brought in my HTC-Desire last week, I experienced dropped connections almost everyday. If I switch the Desire off, then every thing gets to normal. Have you experienced same? Is this something I can overcome by set some settings?

I am trying to conduct a bit of research before starting to develop an android application I am planning. I want the application to exhibit the following behavior:
If connected to WiFi, send and receive messages to remote server.Else If not connected to WiFi, do not send any messages. Display error message.
I am trying to create an ethical application so users will not be charged when they become disconnected from WiFi without them noticing. Any existing source/documentation on how to do this.

I have a Droid X running Gingerbread, and there is one particular WiFi spot that seems to hate me. It's a WiFi router owned by a friend of mine, WPA encrypted. I have the SSID and the password, I can connect to the router. And my network icon turns blue indicating that I have a connection to the Google services. But I can't browse the web, I cannot send/receive email and I cannot use any other app that uses data. Another friend with an iPhone has no problems. My iPod Touch has no problems, but the stuff I want to use is on the Droid.
Two additional kickers to this: My late and unlamented Blackberry had the same problem His router is the same brand (and I think model) as mine and I have zero problems with mine.

My friend just lost his Desire at an airport. The pattern lock is active, but that does nothing but protect the data on the phone - Not SD. The first thing they would do is to switch the phone off and replace the sim.
Now here is my question : Is there an app that will send an sms to a preallocated number if the phone is booted up with a different sim? I know some Samsung phones can do this. But having an app that requires your own sim to be able to find it if stolen is quite pointless.

I have just upgraded to Android 2.1 on Orange(UK). When I connect to WiFi (home WEP and open), it says I am connected - shows IP address etc., but nothing actually works through the WiFi - can't sync Exchange email, can't download from market, won't even update location on Google Maps. If I switch WiFi off everything works fine over mobile network, but that is unsustainable due to data charges.

I just got the Motorola Droid from Verizon with their data plan. Both at home and work, I can access the internet with wifi. Is there any advantage to using one over the other (obviously I use the data plan when wifi isn't available)? The data plan is one monthly fee that I had to pay anyway, but I didn't know if there was something I was missing?
