Android :: Use Data Network While Connected To WiFi
Oct 28, 2009Is it possible to use the cellular 3G data network while connected to WiFi? I want to create connection through the 3G network while WiFi is also connected.

View 2 RepliesI've had my desire for around a month now & had no real problems with it, flashed it with a stock ROM initially & then rooted it a couple of days after the root was released. When I woke up this morning I was connected to my WiFi network but when I tried to load a webpage, nothing happens, it comes up with the stock 'Web page not available' page. I tried a couple of web pages but got the same response, I thought it might be my WiFi network but when I got to work, exactly the same thing happens. I can connect via GPRS when I disable the WiFi with no problem. I've been using Y5 Battery Saver for the past two weeks, not sure if that's relevant. Is this a standard error / known bug, how would I go about fixing this, not having WiFi is obviously a bit of pain!
OK, installed a Terminal emulator over 3G & ran a couple of commands, including dmesg. From the output of dmesg it looks like the WiFi connects but then something goes wrong, here's a brief transcript:
pfn: set ssid = ******
Link event
Link UP
Enter set packet filter
start to add pkt filter 101
wds: 0021 @ 01
qmi: wds: network stopped
rmnet_stop()

If this is any use, I'm happy to try other commands.
I perused the play store looking for an app that will notify me whenever I connect to a specific wifi network but didn't have any luck.
Why I'm looking for this functionality
- i'm on a wifi only plan with my carrier
- my work has a wifi network but it requires me to provide login credentials before it is useable, so I'll be connected to their wifi network but I often forget to login to make it useable.
I am looking for an app that automatically switches off the cellular radio when wifi is connected and switches it back on when wifi loses connection. I'm not talking about the APN data connection which already does that, I'm talking about the regular cell phone connection.
According to my lack of results searching through the forums, Market, and Google, such an app does not exist yet. Currently the best app I've found to do anything remotely like this is the Airplane Mode Wi-Fi app, which is a manual switch and a slightly cumbersome one at that, not nearly good enough for how often I go in and out of wifi.
The reason I ask for this is because I use Google Voice with SIP and a prepaid plan. I want to use SIP as much as possible to save my prepaid minutes for when I really need them. When wifi and cell are both connected with Sipdroid running and I receive a call, they both ring at the same time. To be sure I don't accidentally use prepaid, I usually reject the call and call back over SIP, which is slightly annoying for both me and the caller.
I would like to have the cell network type displayed while I am connected to WiFi in the status bar signal cluster. Currently, once you connect to WiFi, the LTE, H, E, etc, go away; I'd like them to stay.
I can move the WiFi icon over to make room for the type icon (LTE, H, E, etc) just by deleting "android:layout_marginRight="-6.0dip"" at the end of the "id/wifi_combo" line in res/layout/signal_cluster_view.xml in SystemUI.apk.
Where is the function that turns off that cell type icon when WiFi is connected in SystemUI.apk? I know the system can detect the type of network whilst WiFi is connected, it's just a matter for forcing that icon to stay displayed.
I am trying this on Cyanogenmod 11.
Is there a widget out there that displays the wifi network the phone is currently connected to?
I did a quick search and nothing came up. I would love something very minimalistic (Name only would be perfect)
Is there a hack to remove the message that pops up whenever my phone connects to my wifi network? I have the phone set to disconnect wifi when the screen goes off, so I always get the "Connected to wifi network xxxxxx" message when I wake my phone.
I know that there is a hack to remove the "Wifi Network Is Available" message but that is not what I am asking here.
I have a Galaxy S3 on the Bell Mobile network in Canada, and aside from the horrendous battery life, it's a pretty good phone. One thing I notice that's kinda annoying is the "Connected to Wi-Fi network [network name]" pop-up that comes up quite often. I've managed to snap a screenshot of it.
How to disable this? The only info I've found so far is on the Verizon pop-ups, and entering the *#6335623# code on the dial screen, but nothing comes up when I try that, and I'm not even sure that fix would work for this.
I bought this x10 two days ago. I am not still able to make Internet work on it via WiFi. Tasks I performed:
1. Updated X10 to the latest firmware.
2. Connected to My WiFi Network and given the authentication details.
3. Connection status is connected in X10. (There is no problem in connecting to my WiFi Network for X10).
4. I went to Browser and typed Google its coming as "Page Cannot be Displayed"
Problem is: X10 is connecting to WiFi but Cannot Browse. I tired even Use Static IP and gave DNS and gateway even.
I am trying to conduct a bit of research before starting to develop an android application I am planning. I want the application to exhibit the following behavior:
If connected to WiFi, send and receive messages to remote server.Else If not connected to WiFi, do not send any messages. Display error message.
I am trying to create an ethical application so users will not be charged when they become disconnected from WiFi without them noticing. Any existing source/documentation on how to do this.
I have a Droid X running Gingerbread, and there is one particular WiFi spot that seems to hate me. It's a WiFi router owned by a friend of mine, WPA encrypted. I have the SSID and the password, I can connect to the router. And my network icon turns blue indicating that I have a connection to the Google services. But I can't browse the web, I cannot send/receive email and I cannot use any other app that uses data. Another friend with an iPhone has no problems. My iPod Touch has no problems, but the stuff I want to use is on the Droid.
Two additional kickers to this: My late and unlamented Blackberry had the same problem His router is the same brand (and I think model) as mine and I have zero problems with mine.
I have just upgraded to Android 2.1 on Orange(UK). When I connect to WiFi (home WEP and open), it says I am connected - shows IP address etc., but nothing actually works through the WiFi - can't sync Exchange email, can't download from market, won't even update location on Google Maps. If I switch WiFi off everything works fine over mobile network, but that is unsustainable due to data charges.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy HTC Desire (UK) has been find ever I had it, no issues whatsoever. Recently updated the Android software and ever since then I can only access the web/market etc when connected through wifi.
My signal bar simply shows bars whereas in the past it had either a G, 3G or H next to it, and I'm guessing this is linked into the problem.
cannot use sprint data network after using wifi. tried turning phone on and off.. still didnt work.. disabled everything.. wifi.. 4g.. bluetooth...

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy school has an open wifi network. When you first use a device on the network, it presents an authentication page so that you can get full access. I authenticated, and my Vibrant connects fine and is assigned an IP. I checked with the network admin, and my MAC address is registered correctly in their system.
But I can't get any data. Sometimes if I disconnect and reconnect I can load one or two pages, but then data stops.
Other Android users (Nexus One, Droid X) don't seem to have this problem. I'm trying to get the network pro to come and help me out with this, but it seems to be a problem with my phone. Yet my wifi connection at home works fine.
How can I set my Galaxy Nexus to prefer WiFi for data over the Mobile Network? I have to go to settings, turn off "enable data access over mobile network," then cycle WiFi on-off several times before the phone will connect to my home router. Router has two channels, both a WPA2 encrypted one, and a "home guest" (open) one. Both show up as disabled until I cycle the WiFi off and on several times. There must be a setting to tell the phone to prefer WiFi -- no?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently switched from a Blackberry Storm to my first smartphone the HTC Incredible. So far, I'm very happy with the switch and enjoy everything about the HTC Incredible.I'm having a problem with the MOBILE NETWORK being disabled when I'm connected to WI-FI (my home network or any other WI-FI hot spot). Is this suppose to happen? Is there any way to allow this not to happen?? Why does this happen? The problem I'm running in to is when receiving or sending MMS / SMS text messages with pics, I am getting a "MESSAGE NOT DOWNLOADED - GENERIC NETWORK FAILURE" message in my status bar.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy eris has always has pretty alright battery life, what I would expect out of a smartphone, if unplugged at 9AM it usually was running on its last leg around midnight. I've had it for over 5 months now, I've always had it activated on alltel, I installed the 2.1v3 leak before the official OTA was out and just lately it seems like there something very wrong with my battery life...
If I unplug my phone at 9AM within the past week and occasionaly check and respond to a text message, my battery had been down to almost 30% by NOON... what?..
I have noticed that if I disable Mobile Network (3g/1x data), the thing lasts all day and some... If I turn mobile network ON, I can't see that I have any network traffic or any apps running in the background that are syncing data at all... I've had google account sync mess up on me before and have to reset my google account because it gets stuck in a syncing loop, but its not doing that, already checked. Very weird.
Anyone thing it could be something wrong in my ##PROGRAM#/##778# provisioning menu, maybe something got changed?.. Maybe it could be do to Alltel's AT&T merger that's happening right now, maybe some 3G tower's radios are turned off or something...
I don't want my user to even try downloading something unless they have WiFi connected. However I can only seem to be able to tell if WiFi is enabled, but they could still have a 3G connection.
android.net.wifi.WifiManager m = (WifiManager) getSystemService(WIFI_SERVICE);
android.net.wifi.SupplicantState s = m.getConnectionInfo().getSupplicantState();
NetworkInfo.DetailedState state = WifiInfo.getDetailedStateOf(s);
if( state != NetworkInfo.DetailedState.CONNECTED ){
return false;
}
However the state is not what I would expect, even though WiFi is connected I am getting OBTAINING_IPADDR as the state.
The last couple of days I've noticed I can't browse or update apps like Android Facebook, Android Twitter and Google Mail and can't browse the Market when I'm connected to the mobile network on 3. This happens even when the notification tray has the H or G symbol and up- and downstream icons are animating. I've checked through the Mobile Network settings and can't see that I've changed anything by accident. The strange thing is the Friend Stream updates when I'm connected to the mobile network.
Does anybody know what I might be missing?
I have an android application using LocationManager get the cell network location and not the Wifi location? If I have turned off the Wifi antenna and do the following:LocationManager lm = (LocationManager) paramContext.getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);I am always returned the Wifi location and not the cell network location. I want it to return the cell location since I have moved fromthe Wifi location. I tried using a LocationListener but that doesn't seem to help.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI send files to FTP server in my application. Internet permission is set :
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET"/>
It works quite fine when connected with 3G/3G+. Sometimes, not very often, I get a "SocketException no route to host" or "unknown host" exception when trying to connect. When I'm connected with WIFI, it works sometimes and it's very fast, but the same error occurs very often, and when it has occurred I must restart my WiFi to be able to connect again, even with webbrowser. I use apache commons FTPClient this way:
ftpClient.connect(server, 21); ftpClient.login(user, password);
ftpClient.changeWorkingDirectory(directory); ftpClient.setFileType(FTP.BINARY_FILE_TYPE);
BufferedInputStream buffIn = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(file));
ftpClient.enterLocalPassiveMode(); ftpClient.storeFile(file.getName(), buffIn); buffIn.close();
ftpClient.logout(); ftpClient.disconnect();

It looks like having forgot something that makes connection down after several uses of my ftp program, but what? And why does this work quite well (but not always) with 3G/EDGE connection?
So I connected my wifi to my home network, and I was surprised to not see it with the other systems connected throughout the house. I have really never used my droid wifi, but this was interesting, are cellphone wifi's anonymous?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have several remembered WiFi SSIDs on my Droid, including my home WiFi and one for the local library, which are at least 4 miles apart. I just discovered that my Droid is indicating I am connected to the public library WiFi (as shown in my settings screen), when I'm actually connected to my home WiFi. Just to make sure before posting this, I used Network Discovery to confirm that the devices visible to my Droid were the devices on my home WiFi. Other than the incorrect SSID display, the connection seems fine.
