General :: Verizon Galaxy S3 - Factory Reset Not Erase Everything?
Mar 16, 2013
I have been flashing custom ROMs recently and I like to clean flash a new version each time.
I have a Verizon Galaxy S3.
I use CWM Recovery, when I want to erase everything before flashing a new ROM, I "wipe data/factory reset" 3 times, then wipe cache, then wipd Davlik. I then flash the new ROM.
I havent been having any problems with any of the new ROMs.
But after I flash a new ROM and got into my phone's internal SD card storage, all my old files are still there. Any photos I stored, files Ive downloaded via web browser, voice recording files, they're all still there. I understand that factory reset usually doesn't affect the external SD card, but my internal SD card isn't wiped either.
Is this normal? Is it ok to leave these old files there when flashing a new ROM or should I be trying to absolutely get rid of everything prior to fllashing a new ROM?

My galaxy s4 has recently been very slow so I thought that I would try a factory data reset to clear some things up. However, my phone is rooted. Now when I looked around on some other forums it seemed as though that I didn't have to worry about factory resetting the phone while it was rooted. But when I went ahead and did so it no longer will boot. Its stuck in the boot loop/download mode/ whatever you may call it. I can't seem to flash a recovery file through Odin either. My phone is gone now.

I want to do a factory reset on my Verizon s3 to try and fix the issues from the latest software update.
I moved all pictures to the external sd card. Will performing a factory reset wipe out the contents of the external sd card? I don't care if the internal sd card gets cleared out.

I installed the OTA update 2.2 when it was delivered to my unrooted phone. I want to go back to 2.1, but when I go to settings>SD & phone storage>Factory data reset it gives the warning that it will NOT erase: Current system software and bundled applications. Does this mean that the update 2.2 will still be on the phone, or does it goes back to 2.1?

If I hard reset my phone, does that erase the SD card back to factory too? I need to know so I can backup everything on the sd to my desktop first if necessary. And one more question, how do I hard reset my phone to get it back to factory settings. Also, what will happen to my paid apps? I actually paid for Beautiful Widget and when I restore, I don't want to use the same Gmail to set up my contacts as before cuz that account gets too much spam.

I am turning my Hero in for a new EVO and I had information in my Google Voice account that I do not want anyone at the office to be able to dig up...
I performed a factory reset (per the manual) and I want to be 110% sure that no one will be able to "resurrect" my old Google Voice app and see anything...

I just got a replacement DX due to random reboots.I read around on the forums that a factory reset would remove any custom themes as well as remove any signs of root.I was unable to achieve either with a factory reset and had to manually install the stock theme files, unroot, and then factory reset. Is this normal? Or was my factory reset not working properly? Is there a way to get back to "out of the box" without having to manually reinstall a stock theme and unroot?

So we've had the Droid since November, I used it, no problems, then it got passed down to my technologically challenged husband after he "accidentally" broke his flip phone in half.
He put some apps on it, and now it's constantly making sounds confirming every action, despite making sure that was unchecked in settings. (It's quiet when he has media volume turned off, but then he has to manually turn it back on every time he wants to play a game or watch a video.)
I factory reset once, and it was fine, then he put all the same apps back on it, and it started up again. I have now done three more resets, and not only is it not going away, but his same wallpaper keeps coming back, despite it not showing anywhere in the phone's internal memory through Astro, and making sure I had the memory card taken out while resetting. Not only that, but when I attempt to mount the phone to the computer, the memory card shows up, but not the internal memory.
Did he get a virus? Does anyone have any other ideas of how to resolve this?

I have a samsung galaxy tab 2 GTP3100. today it suddenly started to restart in every few minutes.
I tried to uninstall lastly installed app, but the device restarted every time I tried to do something with it. Then i tried to reset it from the settings>>backup & Restore. but no gain. the device was as it was before.
then i tried with system recovery mode. it opened with an error message
did not match sized 'system/csc/common/system/csc/default_workplace.xml' (No data found)
despite tht I performed "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition"
it said to have completed the above operation, no further error message. I rebooted the system... but no gain.. same as before.. not a single change. and the "restarting problem" was ther.

I was messing with my Samsung Galaxy S the other day and came across the Pattern Lock. I thought it was pretty cool so I decided to use it. So I came up with a pattern immediately and, without any thought, I accepted the design I made (It was a complicated one) and forgot what it was right after. I know at some point after failing to enter the correct pattern you get to a "Username" and "Password" box for your Gmail and/or Google account, but, Since my device runs strictly off WiFi and WiFi is turned off I can't sign in. I also tried force resetting my device but it doesn't work like all the videos on YouTube show.
Extra Info
Name of Device: Samsung Galaxy S Media Player 3.6"
Order from Amazon
Internal Memory: 8GB
Micro SD Card: 16GB (Kingston)
Model: N/A
1. During the Google Login screen, I can't access my notification bar, therefore, I can't turn WiFi or anything else on.
2. I tried the different variations of: Turning off device. Holding Volume up+Home Button+Power Button. The "Samsung" logo pops up, vibrates once, and the screen turns pitch black all while still holding buttons and nothing just happens to happen after. When I release the buttons, the device boots up normally but I end up back at the Google login screen.
3. I tried taking the battery out and putting it back, doesn't really affect anything.
4. I tried plugging my device into my computer, but since I'm trapped at the Google lock screen, I don't have the option of connecting "Mass Storage Device" to my computer.
5. I tried adb shell (or whatever the command is) into Command Prompt and it doesn't detect my device. I have all the drivers installed for the device but because I don't have the option of tapping "Connect Mass Storage to Computer" it doesn't sync in with my computer. It just charges my device as if it were a wall charger.
My last resort option was coming to Android Central. Otherwise I'll just go to Radioshack or various other stores and see what they can do if anything at all at least.

I have an AT&T Galaxy S4 I337 that I have been running Cyanogenmod on for quite a while now. Well, after getting bored and wanting to revert to the original firmware, I went through the process of a factory reset to stock through Odin. Everything went smoothly, all that's left is to update to 4.4.2 Kitkat and to root my phone once again. I went into settings and began the OTA update thinking it would install 4.4.2. After about 20 minutes of updating and downloading, my phone finally finished rebooting, but when I checked to see what version of android I was running, it was still 4.2.2. Kies also says that I'm running the latest firmware. Why won't my phone or Kies pick up the new Kitkat update? Does it have something to do with the fact that I flashed a custom ROM before?

First, my phone info: Galaxy S2 I9100, ICS 4.0.3
My question: How do you restore app data from Google servers after a factory reset?
When I upgraded from Gingerbread to ICS, the phone warned me I would be losing all my data. Fortunately under "Settings - Back up and reset" I had checked the "Back up my data" as well as the "Automatic restore" options. When I completed the upgrade to ICS I not only automatically retained all my app data, but I didn't even have to re-download any apps. All my apps I had on Gingerbread, along with all the data, had been successfully and automatically carried over to ICS.
Recently I've been having issues with my home button. After rebooting and some other troubleshooting, I decided to factory reset my phone. Again I made sure the "Back up my data" and "Automatic restore" options were checked. When I completed the factory reset it was like I just powered on my phone for the first time (OBVIOUSLY this is to be expected as I performed a Factory Reset).
Under the "Automatic restore" check box it states "When reinstalling an application, backed up settings and data will be restored". So I began to download and reinstall the apps I had before. The problem is NONE of the apps restored with the data I had backed up to Google servers. Did I do something wrong?
I'm a bit irked because I believe I received the exact same "you're going to lose your data" warning when I upgraded to ICS AND when I performed this recent factory reset. The difference is when I upgraded I got all my stuff back, so I figured after the factory reset, when I reinstalled my apps I'd get the data back too. I think it's only fair if Google really WILL restore data after an upgrade, but NOT restore data after a factory reset they should annotate that in their warning. Also maybe include a statement like, "After performing a factory reset you will not be able to retrieve app data from Google Servers. We recommend installing a third party app to save your important app data." But instead you get the same warning with two different results.

I have installed some apps from Android Market to my Galaxy y. I needed to reset the factory settings and all the apps in the phone was erased. I only wanted to delete the email account. I tried to go to Android Market to reinstall. But it won't get in my phone anymore even when I click on install. There is a button that says installed. I checked on "manage account" setting and none of the applications are there. From Android market, when I click on "My Library" I see all the apps that I have downloaded before.
Question: Is it not possible to reinstall these free apps again? If so how do I do it?

Just ran reset on my phone twice...it rebooted and nothing was removed! Never seen this before anyone have any thoughts? I'm on CM 5.0.7.1, and haven't seen this behavior before on that or any other ROM. Gonna boot into recovery and do it manually.

I wanted to create a new account on a game but the game keep remembering me so I can't create a new account.
Basically I been playing Valkyrie Crusade and I want to start all over. When I install/reinstall the game, it auto logs in with my account. Even when I did factory reset(erase data on SD card also) on my phone, it still auto logs in with my account so I can't create a new account. I factory reset, download game from app store, install app and game still recognize this phone's account.
So yeah, just wondering if there's a way to completely resets it.

I have seen some reports that after going to Froyo you need to perform a factory reset. I presume that this will wipe all the applications, user data, etc. Question here is: Before starting the upgrade process in Kies (which will offer to backup your contacts for you) what should I backup? Is there a program recommended for this backup? Is it safe to restore everything or should I only partially put things back?

I'm having some problems with my Android TV box. When I try to factory reset the box, it boots with the initial setup screen as you'd expect. However when I restart the box, it returns to its pre-reset state, with all my apps and settings as they were before the reset. I have tried the following:
- Full factory reset
- Installing older firmware, deleting partition cache, then reinstalling the new firmware
Despite all this the box still boots with my previous apps/data/settings.

So my aunt recently gave me her old HTC Thunderbolt. Ive tried doing a factory reset through settings and also through the volume down/power button but neither worked. Every time i try to do a factory reset it brings me back to the boot loader screen and says ***LOCKED***SECURITY WARNING***. I also tried loading the stock RUU onto the phone but it says *MAIN VERSION IS OLDER and wouldnt accept the RUU I put on the SD card. How I can get this phone to factory reset? Or where I can find a stock RUU that will work? Phones current software: Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich Bootloader screen says:
MECHA XD SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.08.0000
MICROP- /
RADIO-2.02.00.1117r

My current ROM does not allow me to Turn on the Debug Mode for some reason I don't know. The tablet is provided by our school so it has many restrictions like Facebook, Twitter and any other platforms that is not "trusted" by the government. The tablet is being updated like every day to patch the restrictions. I was be able to turn on the USB Debug mode but now they blocked it, too. So I decided to get tablet back to factory settings so I will be able to Turn on Debug Mode and root the tablet and remove the restrictions. I do press Power Button & Volume Up button to open up Android System Recovery. The weird thing is I only have:
-reboot system now
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
I don't have any other options like "Install from SD Cart" or whatever other tablets have. Anyway I do select 2nd option which is wipe/data factory reset option and Yes -- delete all user data option.
It says:
-Wiping data...
-Formatting /data...
.. and after a while it restart and opens up like nothing changed. Same tablet before I shut down. Neither 3nd option does work. What can I do to root it or make it to the factory reset?

I have a nook tablet running Cyanogenmod 7.2 that I've just sold, but when I went to try to do a factory reset it asked me for the unlock pattern, which I don't ever recall setting up. I have to send the tablet to the seller by tomorrow and I cannot do a factory reset. Is there a way for me to do a factory reset before the system loads or otherwise? I would really like to avoid having to flash the rom again (I don't even have a micro sd card at hand).
