General :: Remapping HW Buttons Via Kernel

Aug 5, 2013

I have an android device running gingerbread (2.3.6) my power button (which also serves the purpose of unlocking the device) is broke so basically what am trying to do is to wake the device up using volume buttons instead of power. The things I've tried so far:

*a few apps from store like - button saviour /proximity unlock etc some of them do work but they drain battery like hell moreover are useless in waking from homescreen

*a Google search showed me many a guides on button remapping so i tried modifying /usr/keylayout files but there seems to be no effect whatsoever

What am looking for :

*i think remapping via kernel is ma last hope so I've synced sources and setup the environment but don't know how to proceed.

General :: SCH-R950 - Back And Menu Buttons Stopped Working After Putting New Kernel

Feb 13, 2013

I picked up the kernel code released by Samsung for SCH-R950 (US Cellular) from opensource.samsung
Kernel version: 3.0.31
Build Number: JR003C.R950VXALJ1

I changed the kernel code to accommodate my changes, compiled and flashed using ODIN. The phone came up well but the back and menu buttons stopped working. I undid my changes, compiled and flashed again. This time again the back and menu buttons didn't work. So, it seems that the source code or the build instructions released by Samsung has some issue. The config file used was t0uscc_04_defconfig (released along with the code). I have attached the build config file.

General :: IconBIT Toucan Nano Hard Keys Remapping

Mar 22, 2012

I am building a carPC system based on Android 2.3 device IconBIT Toucan Nano. It's an ARM9 standalone box w/ HDMI and 2 USB ports, no GPS, no WiFi, no screen. Device comes rooted.

I've built a HID USB keyboard emulator based on a PIC18F2550 to use car radio keys to control the Android box, they basically map to F1-F10 keys, but I can change the setting to any HID USB scan code of course.

What I am trying to achieve is to be able to start Music player, Navigation and some other apps of my choice by pressing a single hardkey. When you drive, you don't really want to browse menus and look thru Applications, you just want a seperate keys for Music player, Navigation, Camera, etc etc. I have found a keylayout file (/system/usr/keylayout/*) which maps hardkeys to keys and apps, however it only runs pre-chosen default apps (like Music.apk or VideoPlayer.apk), and no user-specified apps.

I would like e.g. to run PowerAMP instead of Music.apk when 'MUSIC' key is pressed, also I would like to run Navigation (e.g. Google Maps) when some other key (say 'CAMERA') is pressed.

How do I specify my own apps for hard keys? I should use some Application->Launch menu, but my device does not have this menu. Also, another way is again go to Applications, All and change defaults, but no defaults are set for music player.

Also, for some reason, when I installed the latest firmware provided by IconBIT, HOME button stopped working. I have a mapping in keylayout file like key 62 HOME # F4, but just nothing happens when F4 is pressed.

I think there's gotta be some config file responsible for the apps launched on hardkey press, but where is it?

Samsung Moment :: Joeys Kernel And Get Stock Kernel Back

Jun 11, 2010

where I have got right now on my phone, which is:

1. I updated to stock 2.1 using the sprint update tool.
2. I followed the video tutorial to root the phone
3. then i used joey's page (http://www.joeyconway.com/sdx/custom/index.php) to install the his kernel (joeykrim-SDX-kernel v2.0.4 (includes root)).

I have done nothing else to the phone but this and removing a couple of bloatware apps (i checked the list of permitted deletions before i removed anything.) I have not installed a new recovery..at least i dont think that I did as part of one of the other operations I performed (as an aside, i am not really sure what the custom recovery is or what it is used for, so i didnt install it...i guess i need to read up more...)

So that is where I am..but i have a couple of questions.

1) i am now having issues with my wifi connection - the signal reception is very spotty in areas where i should have atleast 2 bars of reception, and the wifi often cuts out completely....Is there any know corellation between joey's kernel and this wifi issue? I have searched the forums and have found nothing that answers this.

2) Is there an easy way to get back to the stock kernel? I have read that i can get back to stock everything by using the sprint download center where I did my original 2.1 update. But is there a way to get back to just the stock kernel without wiping the phone?

Android :: Placing Buttons - Place Four Buttons Near Top - Left - Bottom - Right Edge Of The Screen

I am not able to find out the perfect layout(viewgroup) to place four buttons as shown in the attached image. Basically, i want to place four buttons near the top/left/bottom/right edge of the screen. AbsoluteLayout helped, but it is deprecated (It is also better to avoid AbsoluteLayout as it is not very flexible for orientation changes)

General :: How Is Kernel Extracted

Jan 23, 2013

We know that the ROM is installed to the /system partition. Likewise the kernel ie boot.img is installed to the /boot partition of the device. I tried hard but could not find any reference to such a /boot partition(directory) in the root of the device. I would like know whether it is hidden or disguised as something else. The script that flashes the custom kernels has the following line

Code:
package_extract_file("boot.img", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p9");
(What is the block code for system and other partitions?)

Is mmcblk0p9 the /boot partition? Moreover /dev/block has no reference to boot or mmcblk0p9. So where exactly is the kernel being extracted? The boot.img comes packaged as zImage + ramdisk, In other words where are zImage and ramdisk extracted to, in the root file system and in what form? Is the ramdisk responsible for the creation of the root files system(/dev, /proc, /data. /system, /sys, /sbin etc)?

General :: Possible To Keep Gingerbread Kernel For ICS?

Well I am working on beagleboard-xm project, where I am supposed to upgrade the current Android version to ICS. The thing is, I have to keep the current kernel , because it is customized for some applications that run on that board. It is not me that compiled that kernel...

Is it even possible to keep the "old" kernel and upgrade to ICS? Can it be done in any way? Or a new kernel with new patches has to be installed...?

Android :: Header - Views And Buttons - How To Attach Listeners To Buttons In A Header That Does Not Have Its Own Activity

Jan 6, 2010

I have touched on this question here, where Christopher gave an answer to this, but I dont really get it so I thought its time to make it a real question, not just a "follow up" =)

As it stands, the application Im writing has 4 different screens:
1. Screen 1 - list of nodes (main screen)
2. Screen 2 - options menu, tableLayout with buttons
3. Screen 3 - navigation
4. Screen 4 - text details on version etc

These screens can be navigated to/from using a "header" View that is placed on top. the header then has 4 different buttons:

+--------------------+
menu with buttons
+--------------------+

C O N T E N T

+--------------------+

The header is just an XML-file (header.xml) with a few buttons. That header.xml is the included in the Layouts using the include-markup. For example, the main.xml has the line:

<include layout="@layout/header"></include>

The header show up alright, but the question is - what is the correct approach to attach OnClickListeners for the buttons in the header?

Christopher pointed out that you could create an Activity class and do the hooks there, like this:

CODE:............

First, I cant make it work since the method setupHeaderButtons isnt accessible from FirstActivity.
Secondly, is this the right way to go at it?

General :: Android Kernel Optimization

May 8, 2013

What sections of kernel code are changed for optimization of performance.

Like we can change
1) the minimum free memory that android need to keep free.
2) Rate of clearing cache
3)Advanced LMK- where we can kill more than one process at at time when memory scarcity occurs.
4) Reducing logging.
5) In framework we can change the oom_adj value of important processes.
6) Implement Zram for kernel.
7) change the minimum and maximum no of process for AMS.

I want to know all the changes that can be made into kernel or framework code to optimize performance. I also want to know how can we implement swapcache for android kernel. What changes do i need to make in the code.
