General :: Passing A String To GetString?

i'm making a program that needs to set to a textview the content of a string stored in resource/string file
in my program i generate a string and i need to set the text using that string like a resource id. the problem is that the resouurce ids are integers.
something like:
test = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.tvMyTV);
mystring = "test_a";
test.setText(Html.fromHtml(getString(R.string.myst ring)));
-----------
i obviously can't use R.string.mystring, i should use
test.setText(Html.fromHtml(getString(R.string.test _a)));

When programming for Android sometimes you have to use static methods. But when you try to acces you resources in a static method with getString(R.string.text) you'll get an error. Making it static doesn't works. Does anyone knows a good way around this because the resource files in Android are very helpfull for creating things in different languages or making changes to a text.

I'm not very clear about the Intent object and how to use it to pass data between Activities. In my application I have several tabs between which I want to pass ArrayList. Here is a sample code I plan to use, but I'm missing the part where the main activity catches the Intent and passes it to the new activity on start :
1. myTabs.java ==> This is where I think I need to add some code to pass the data between TabOne and TabTwo. For now it is just using the sample code of the TabActivity sample.

2. TabOne.java ==> I added a piece of code in the onStop procedure to fill in the Intent data with the array I want to pass to TabTwo. Not sure it is the right way to do though.

I am having a unicode string "u3403" which is actualy some japansee character I want to pass it through a JSON object. So i put the value as say String str ="u3403" jsonObject.put("name",str); When i do this the json object internally adds another escape sequence as "u3403", and the request string has two "" slashes.This is interpreted wrongly by the server as it does not detect unicode name.What can i do for this?

I already tried with bundle.putextra like methods. But those allow only one dimensional string array.

I am a newb to Android and Java and want to write a funtion that will display a list based on a varable that I pass to the function. The function is below and the code below creates an array out of a string called type, but what I want to do is pass it a variable string and have it build a list based on that string. So if I wanted the type list I would say list_it("type")But if I try something like getResources().getStringArray (R.array.thelist); it doesn't work.Can someone point me in the right direction? public void list_it(String thelist){String[] types = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.type); ArrayAdapter<String> mAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.list_item1, types);

I have the localized strings file that is used in the Iphone app that I work on to port to Android. Are there any tools that go through the file taken from the xcode project and build the xml needed to use the strings in android? This tool should be easy to build but I appreciate any pointers to already working tools.

In Android, capturing date from datepicker and storing as string in sqlite. Sorting by date doesn't work because they're strings (unless I'm doing it wrong.I've googled this issue for ~5 days, and it looks like there should be a way to capture the date from the date picker, convert it to a Long, store it in sqlite as a Long, select and sort on the Long date value, then convert the Long back to a "mm/dd/yyyy" string for display. I've tried various combinations of parse statements, Date, FormatDate, etc. with no luck at all.On activity start, get today's date and display it in button which calls the datepicker.Capture new date from datepicker (if one is entered), save it as a long to sqlite.On opening an activity showing a listview of records, select from sqlite with orderby on date (Long), convert Long to "mm/dd/yyyy" string for display in ListView.

I have preferences where you can enable/disable what items will show up on the menu. There are 17 items. I made a string array in values/arrays.xml with titles for each of these 17 items.
I have preferences.xml which has the layout for my preferences file, and I would like to reference a single item from the string array to use as the title.
In the Android developer reference, I see how I can reference a single string with XML, but now how I can reference a string from an array resource in XML.

I have a class that creates a view to gather data via a function getView() that provides a view with an EditText.This class has also has variable answer.When the user chances the EditText I want to store the content of the EditText in answer.If I would use an onKeyListener I fear that the answer will probably get stored before the last letter is entered.Is there a good way to handle this in the getView() function via some other listener?

I have an Android app where I want to check to see if an app name that is installed matches a string passed to the function containing this code.Assuming you called checkInstalledApp('SetCPU'); and the app name on the phone is called the same thing it should return true. However, it never does. I logged the results and it should match up but it does not. Can anyone please enlighten me as to why this doesn't work?

Does anyone have any idea how to find the n-th field (string) in a delimited string where the delimiters (separator) could be either a single char or several chars.and the syntax for user-defined function is FindNthField(string,separator,position)so position 3 would return three,The separator in use would actually be Chr(13).This has to run on Android and so should be efficient.

I have installed Power Strip, and the very first time I was asked to use my preferred home screen, I selected the existing one (using a GS).
What I want to do is to have Power String dock displayed if I do a double click on the home key. I played with the settings but it seems that it doesn't work. Any hint?

I have a string, which user just inputted and I want to print out specific letter. App stops working just when I enter any sort o string on my phone. Here is the code.

found that the problem is check.chartAt(j) line, without it, app doesn't crash. Why chartAt make my app to crash? are there any alternatives to charAt?

I just want to read <string-array> resource elements into a String array. I don't want to make a view or anything and mess with adapters - just want to transfer the elements. Is there a built in class for this? Or do I need to treat the resource file as a regular file?

ok so i go on some sites that show what phone i'm using, some browsers show the phone, but opera mini 7 always show 'posted from opera mini 7'. could i change that at all?
my phone is a chinese one but i'm guessing that makes no difference, but it'd be nice if i could type my own message in so it read something like 'posted from [my own text here]'
i could think of a few funny things to put, or simply just put iOcean X7 (as that's my phone)
i'm guessing if i go into my files and folders, i'd find something somewhere, but going in there scares me.

I would like to setup a boolean called dFlag in the main.class of my program and reference it in another class.
I already have it setup to work locally just hitting a snag on how to do it.
Code:
public class Main extends Activity {
boolean dFlag; ///Debug flag, true=enabled | false=disabled

}
Or is there an easier way to do what I want without having to re-invent the wheel so to speak?

Is there a way to pass an Array List of objects between activities? The myObject implements Parcelable and I'm able to successfully pass the objects around individually, but that means I need to have an exact amount of "myObjects" coded. I want this to dynamically grow/shrink by what the user does with the app. I have seen some posts on the web about doing:
Activity A
ArrayList<myObject> myObjArray = new ArrayList<myObject>();
Then when passing this into the intent I would use:
intent.putParcelableArrayListExtra("myObjArray", myObjArray);
Activity B
ArrayList<myObject> myObjArray = new ArrayList<myObject>();
Bundle extras = getIntent().getExtras(); myObjArray = extras.getParcelableArray("myObjArray");
However, the myObjArray always gets filled with "null". How can I achieve this?

I have an ArrayList<MyList> aList in an activity. I would like to send this data to another activty. Such that,
ArrayList<MyList> aList;

On the receiving activity,
Intent i = getIntent(); newList = (ArrayList<MyList>) i.getSerializableExtra("MyList");
But this gets me no where. ERROR! My intention is to share this List between activities.

I have searched and searched and I just can't get this code to work. I have a main.xml layout and a setting.xml. I have some values I would like the Settings.class to change in my main apps class.Three string to be exact. I have tried this simple test code in my main app class.

I have an app which makes use of several layout-views. Every layout - view also got a class for it, which extend the Activity class. One class for example retrieves some database values whilst offering a search form to the user. Afterwards the user can select one of those values and he gets presented with another screen which gives similar options as the one selected. Anyways, I'd like for the first Activity to be able to send an array with data (Strings for example) to the second one. Right now I show an activity by using:
Intent i = new Intent(this, activitysName.class); startActivity(i);
I have no idea whilst using this construction how I can "initialize" the new object with the String array I want to pass to it. So how should this be achieved ? Should I be using something else instead of an Intent-Activity combination ?

I have four groups in a listview each with four url's I want to load in a webView. When the user select a url to goto I set a value like so;
if (position == 0) webb = webb +2;

Intent intent = new Intent(this, official.class);
startActivity(intent);
}
I then carryout the intent to move to the webView class where I have given each URL a value like so;
if (webb == 2) mWebView.loadUrl("http://yahoo.com");
if (webb == 3) mWebView.loadUrl("http://www.bbc.co.uk");
But the screen stays blank, if I state the value inside the official.class it works. How can I get this value to pass to another class based on the selection the user makes from the listview.

I have been trying to get "getExtra" to work but without success, I have a listview with 4 choices which launch a webpage within a webView class, when the user selects the option lets say option 3 I want to pass the value of 3 to the webView class so that it will load the correct webpage, at the moment I get no errors, but the app force closes when I select the option, could this be due to having to announce this in the manifest? can somebody help with where I am going wrong.
