General :: Lag - Stutter And Choppy Pull Down Notification
Oct 30, 2012
I'm porting MIUI JB for Samsung Galaxy S III. Almost everything works smooth as it should and I'm left with only one little but verry annoying issue: when pulling down the notification status bar the animation lags, it's choppy, not Jelly Bean smooth. All other animations run smooth. This problem prevents many user's acces to a beautifuly crafted ROM in wich I invest most of my spare time and I wouldn't want to stop developing this just for an animation issue.
The MIUI I port is original miuiandroid's Galaxy Nexus version and the base I use is CM10 for SGS III of course, which has nice and fluid animation.
I also tryied other MIUI base, such as Nexus S, and also changed the CM10 build, but every combination has this issue. Related to this I read in different places words like SystemUI, surfaceflinger, motion blur, and vsync... but don't know much about them.

Is there anyway to have the pull down notification bar open even during an app?
In the iphone you can pull it down in any game or app, but in android you have to be on the home screen to do so.

What You think about pulled down notification bar in games or another fullscreen apps like in iphone?
When You receive notif while You play it would be great to just drag from the top and notification bar will show up.

I want to find a way to delete an email immediately when I see it come in - right from the notification drawer pull-down. Same thing for SMS / text messages. Often, if it is a spam email or a Google Voice reminder for a meeting, I want to just delete it, but instead I have to launch the respective program and delete it from there.
I'm running LiquidSmooth right now, but I'm not aware that any ROM has this functionality.

About 12 days ago my notification bar would not pull down. I rebooted the phone and it started working again. Two days later it stopped working again. I rebooted the phone and still nothing. I powered down the phone and pulled the battery for 5 minutes. Still no go. Today I did a factory reset. With no additional apps loaded, it still would not work. I am able to bring up the bar from Menu->Notifications and it works in landscape.

I bought a Tmobile Galaxy S2 about 2 months ago, and everything worked just fine. 2 weeks ago I upgraded it to Android 4, and now when I play back the video's that I recorded with the phone, they stutter regularly every second or two. This happens when I play them on the phone, I haven't tried downloading them to the computer yet. I never noticed this when using the previous version of Android that came with the phone (I believe it was 2.3?). setting which might be causing this, or any other solutions.
The other thing I noticed when upgrading s that the battery runs out a lot faster than it did before. I used to have about 50-60% charge left at the end of the day, and now it's closer to 30-40%. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

Is there a way to add common system setting into the notification pull down menu?
On my old Samsung Galaxy S3, when you swipe down from the top of the screen and pull down notifications, at the top above notifications are buttons for common system settings to access (in order they are: Wi-Fi, GPS, Sound, Rotation, Bluetooth, Smart Stay, Airplane Mode, Power Saving, Hands-free mode, Screen Mirroring)
This was very useful because was easy to quickly access key functions. For example "1) swipe down and 2) press WiFi to turn on/off" or "1) swipe down and 2) press GPS to turn location on/off".
On my new Nexus 5 this functionality does not exist. When you swipe down to see notifications, key system buttons are not present. Instead there is a single system button in the upper right corner which you need to press to for common system settings (Brightness, Settings, WiFi, Mobile [ATT/Verizon], Battery, Airplane Mode, Bluetooth, Location)
This means to access common system settings requires an extra step. For example "1) swipe down, 2) press system button and 3) press WiFi to access WiFi page"
Is there a way to put these common system setting into the notification pull down menu?

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the text that always says "Verizon Wireless" when you pull down the notification bar? I am currently not rooted, but will be doing so in the next few days (I'm still trying to decide what ROM i want to flash to start out). I don't know if this is even possible, but I thought it would be another good way to make my phone unique.

There are a few ways to change the color of the clock, notification bar, and pull down menu.
Standard disclaimer: I take no responsibility for anything you do or screw up on your phone.
AdamZ has updated method A (now called Droid Customizer) and it now changes all notification colors. It will overwrite any other changes you have previously made to the services.jar and framework-res.apk files so the manual method is still useful for people who have already made changes and don't want to lose them.
A - [Release] Droid Customizer v1.0 *Updated 3/02* (edit 4/7/10: fixed this link)
If you are familiar with the installation process of the smoked glass themes then this is an option. Has 13 color options as well as 12 font options that you can use.
B - Manually (sorta) change everything. I did it this way because AdamZ's method in A wasn't out yet and I think the way described in method A might overwrite other changes you have made (not sure on that though)
This will probably look long with a lot of steps but it really isn't too complicated.
Prerequisits
Rooted
Android sdk installed and some familiarity with adb
adb info: Start Here | Root Your Droid
1 - Plug in your phone and don't mount the sd card.
2 - On your computer open a command prompt and navigate to the android sdk tools folder.
3 - Type these commands:
Code: ...

I have an app which within the main Activity a SensorListener is setup. The listener detects changes from the accelerometer and sends updates to various child views, which update the display. When the app first start up, it's great - the graphics are smooth and the sensor notifications are immediately reflected in the views. Then after a few minutes it starts to stutter, making the display very jerky - and for the purpose of this app quite unusable. I've done some logging and the sensor updates are still being passed, but they start stacking up and all get sent in batches. It's like the system has put this app down the priority list after it's been running a while. I've added some garbage collecting but it only seemed to help a little. What could be happening here? How can I try and keep this app at the top of the priority list?

Does anyone's app screen stutter slightly when scrolling? If you quick flick to the bottom it seems somewhat ok but if you slow-scroll it seems to stutter. It just isn't as smooth as my iPhone. It's not terrible but comparatively annoying.

I have been experiencing some frustrating audio stuttering or skipping while using A2DP Bluetooth stereo. After a lot of web searching and experimentation, I seem to have found a solution and thought I would pass it along just in case it may be of help to others.First, the problem. I am using a Sprint Samsung Moment Android v 1.5 phone and an Altec-Lansing/Plantronics Backbeat 903 bluetooth stereo headset. This combination has generally been working great so long as I am indoors or in my car. Oddly, though, as soon as I start moving around, especially outdoors -- and especially in a downtown area -- I would begin to get persistent drop outs, stuttering, skipping, etc.Research on a number of websites suggested two potential general sources for problem:
1. A2DP uses most or all of the bluetooth bandwidth and a fair amount of processor; this can create a problem of insufficient bandwidth and/or system resources. A number of sites and posts suggest various approaches based on this notion, most of which involve turning off or shutting down as many resources as possible including wifi, gps, unnecessary applications, or even restarting the phone to clear out such processes. I already do most of this just to try to keep my battery alive through the entire day. But there was one item I had not turned off and it seems to be making a significant difference: Wifi notification. (Menu --> Settings --> Wireless controls ==> Wi-Fi Settings --> Network Notification.)I have run across several theories as to why this would work. Some suggest that when you are walking outdoors (especially in an urban area), the wifi notification function encounters (moves in and out of) a lot more wifi networks and that the stuttering occurs when it is sampling or processing each of these new networks. In any event, turning this feature off seems to have made a significant difference. This seems to make a difference even if you already keep wifi turned off.
2. The other line of potential causes could be a problem with signal strength. One post suggested that bluetooth signals are stronger (or are reflected back) indoors or in a car -- but simply dissipate when you are outdoors. The suggested fix for this (as odd as it may seem) is to simply move your phone to the other side of your body. The purpose here is to avoid the bluetooth signal having to travel through your body. It turns out that Altec-Lansing actually makes this same recommendation on their support page. To my surprise, this also seems to work. The bluetooth receiver on the Backbeat headset is apparently on the left side. Being right handed, I have always preferred to carry my phone on the right. But moving the phone to my left side helped to dramatically reduce the stutters and drop outs I was experiencing with the headset.
These two steps have really helped to solve this problem for me. Using my bluetooth stereo headphones has become a real joy instead of an ongoing source of frustration. I hope this experience can be helpful to others.

I listen to a lot of music and podcasts while walking and have noticed that there is a tremendous amount of stutter that happens. Does anyone else get this issue? I wonder if it is the headphone jack or the software that causes this.

Ever since I bought my hero in December, I have had this problem where if I'm in a game, and it requires the screen to be touched, the game stutters. This happened when I had the stock 1.5. I needed to trade my hero for another when a lot of dust showed up under the screen, so Sprint gave me another one, only this one worked perfectly. No stuttering at all. So I decide to root it, and now it's running Aloysius, and the stuttering is back. Does anyone know what could be causing this? It happens in both the official and unofficial firmware. I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. Games it does this in includes: Nesoid and snesoid, and Raging Thunder to name a few. These games worked perfectly to my shock when I got the new phone, as I originally thought it was just a hero problem. I even emailed the developer of Nesoid but he didn't know the cause. Any suggestions?

Just wondering if anyone else experiences choppy video when playing say like flash video from ESPN or if you try to watch a video from NBC.com. The video playback on Youtube is great but seems like all other video is really unwatchable. I also tried over my wi-fi and made no difference.

I just received a new Droid X yesterday from VZW and immediately upgraded it to official 2.2. The thing seems slower and more jerky than my stock incredible which is pretty damn smooth. If I scroll through the homescreens with a static (non live) wallpaper, it's almost like the walpaper stutters and jumps forward and back a fraction of an inch as it moves across the screen. Haven't really noticed it when using a live wallpaper. Anyone else see this? Really frustrating. Dissapointingly I might have to go back to the DINC if this continues. I don't notice this at all when using Launcher Pro.

This is the only big problem I've had with the update so far but I gotta say it's a big problem for me because I take tons of pictures and record lots of video..

I've noticed that since today, video playback on my Motorola Milestone has become almost impossible
The video starts ok, but all the sudden it gets REALLY choppy (like 3 FPS or so)
Audio still runs at regular speed and no glitches there...
This happens with any video, be it Youtube, or some video i shoot with the phone.
Does someone here experienced something like that ?
I turned it off, removed the battery, waited a couple of minutes and turned it back on... and problem persists... Also i've noticed that the time in the status bar, sometimes shows incorrect time...

What's up with the profile pics in our contacts that are synced with Facebook being so damn choppy and low-quality? Same goes with the Friends widget on Touchwiz. I have to rely on taking my own pictures and cropping them into my contacts. Is there no other way around it?
