General :: Galaxy S4 - WiFi And Network Service / Fail To Obtain IP
Sep 28, 2013
I have a S4 (SGH-I337M) with Android 4.2.2 installed on it, Not Rooted, Not unlock. My problem is with the WIFI and Network mobile serviec (GMS, 4G).
1. when i turn the wifi on, it gives me fail to obtain IP, and at the same the mobile service detected my Mobile Network (Rogers) for moment then it turns to No service for few moment to come back to Rogers an other time and so on( like infinity loop between Service detected and No service).
2. usually when i turn off the WIFI, the phone goes to look for 4G network but this doesn't happen now, and still Mobile Service between detected and Not.
3. What has been said until now is with SIM card On. and i tried to take it out the phone and turn the phone on, and the same problem is still with Mobile Network service but now the infinity look (as I like to call it) is between No service and Insert Sim card, at the same time can't access to the WIFI (Fail to obtain IP).
i have tried several thing to solve problem : like changing the SIM card, Reset phone to factory setting, turn it off for while and open it, but the problem still excite.
it seems that it is software problem but i don't know which process responsible of Network Service setting (WIFI, 4G, GSM) so i can stop it and lunch it again.

It seems the java.net.NetworkInterface implementation of android does not have a byte[] getHardwareAddress() method http://developer.android.com/reference/java/net/NetworkInterface.html
I've found several forums of people trying to do this with no definitive answer, I need to get a somewhat cross-device UUID, so I can't rely on phone numbers or in ANDROID_ID (which can be overwritten and which I think depends on the user having a google account http://developer.android.com/reference/android/provider/Settings.Secure.html#ANDROID_ID
In linux you can use ifconfig or read from /proc/net/arp and you can easily get the Hardware address.
Is there a file in android that I can read?
There has to be a way to get this address since it's shown in the "Settings > About Phone > Status" of the phone.

I just got my Galaxy S4 today, and decided to turn off Wi-Fi so I can see if 3G works. I have a bunch of bars, but every time i try to use something that requires an internet connection, the phone says im not connected. I dont even see a menu to turn on 4g and 3g like my Evo 3D had.

I have a Galaxy S3 on the Bell Mobile network in Canada, and aside from the horrendous battery life, it's a pretty good phone. One thing I notice that's kinda annoying is the "Connected to Wi-Fi network [network name]" pop-up that comes up quite often. I've managed to snap a screenshot of it.
How to disable this? The only info I've found so far is on the Verizon pop-ups, and entering the *#6335623# code on the dial screen, but nothing comes up when I try that, and I'm not even sure that fix would work for this.

How can I set my Galaxy Nexus to prefer WiFi for data over the Mobile Network? I have to go to settings, turn off "enable data access over mobile network," then cycle WiFi on-off several times before the phone will connect to my home router. Router has two channels, both a WPA2 encrypted one, and a "home guest" (open) one. Both show up as disabled until I cycle the WiFi off and on several times. There must be a setting to tell the phone to prefer WiFi -- no?

I was trying root my Galaxy S2 HD LTE that i just got from Korea (I am based in the UK)
Was trying to install ICS on this - not sure I have fubar'ed the device or just that my korean is not up to it, but I cannot figure out what I need to do.
Basically i got to the stage of installing kies, then Odin 1.85, and was following the "Firmware I9100XXLPB Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for Samsung Galaxy S II I9100" link
I have tried to reset the device to no avail.

I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, 7" (WIFI-ONLY).
Firstly, let's start by saying that I ended up rooting it after a while because it got boring having the simple, unmodified android.
It seems creativity got the best of me, and I ended up wanting to switch back to my normal android days. The problems started when I looked for the ways to upgrade my device, and it sais my device had been modified (rooted). So then I tried deleting SuperSU, thinking that would unroot, but nope... I then went to my great friend, we all know as Google. I then found the firmware, however didn't notice it said 3G, not just WIFI.... and loaded it onto my tablet following the instructions leading me to use Odin. I now have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 WIFI only, with 3G Firmware.
After countless hours, days, and now weeks of trying to get it back to the normal firmware, all my attempts result in an error on Odin, and here's what I get:
First, I just load the .md5 file, and this happens.
---
<ID:0/006> Added!!
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..[code]....
Now, what do I do to get my precious tablet back to normal? , since I have the 3G version, I'm required to have a sim card which I can't put in because there's no sim card slot (it's a WIFI tab). I can't even use WiFi, because it won't turn on without a SimCard.

I'm using a galaxy nexus with the newest version of jelly bean. For the past couple weeks, ive been experiencing a constant barrage of gmail sign in failed error messages.
I am able to login to gmail using the gmail application, as well as the generic email application. in the google account settings, it is able to be synced, and manually syncing doesn't prompt the error message.
I googled this issue and came across a couple solutions - changing my password using the chrome mobile browser, clearing the cache, etc, but nothing seems to work.
Its getting fairly frustrating having this notification pop up every few minutes or so.

My school has an open wifi network. When you first use a device on the network, it presents an authentication page so that you can get full access. I authenticated, and my Vibrant connects fine and is assigned an IP. I checked with the network admin, and my MAC address is registered correctly in their system.
But I can't get any data. Sometimes if I disconnect and reconnect I can load one or two pages, but then data stops.
Other Android users (Nexus One, Droid X) don't seem to have this problem. I'm trying to get the network pro to come and help me out with this, but it seems to be a problem with my phone. Yet my wifi connection at home works fine.

I've had a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 for just over a year. A few weeks ago, I updated to Android 4.2.2 whilst visiting my parent's house and it started continually rebooting itself. I did a factory reset (or two) before figuring out that it's entirely down to the WiFi. If I get in quick enough and don't allow it to connect, the problem stops, and it only occurs with the WiFi at my parent's house (though it always worked fine before the update). I've tried unplugging the WiFi repeater, which was a relatively new addition to the house, but it hasn't made a difference.

I apologize in advance for this long post, but it's necessary to show what is happening.
I've been working on an app that works on the 1.6 emulator, but bombs on my G1.
Here is the Photographer activity:
CODE:..........
And here is where this activity gets called from:
CODE:............
Having trouble pasting the relevant portions of AndroidManifest.xml, but I have permissions for Camera:
CODE:..........
Here's the Photographer part:
CODE:..............
Also set for testing on G1:
android:debuggable="true"
and working off of 1.6:
<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="4" />
All this works on a 1.6 emulator, but when I run this on the G1, LogCat shows:
CODE:.............
And /data/anr/traces.txt shows:
CODE:................
It sounds like the problem is a timeout issue, but I am at a loss as to where I should be looking ....

I've had wifi in my house for years. As I type these devices are connected: ps3, desktop, laptop, wife's iphone. Everything works fine. I walked in the house with my Captivate and it can't obtain an IP address. The password is right. It gets to "Obtaining IP address" but then it says "Unsuccessful." I have never ever had a device issue connecting to my wifi. Numerous family/friend phones have connected without a glitch. Any ideas?

I have the Galaxy S3 mini. I keep getting the notification to "Sign into Wi-Fi network"..Sometimes my phone is connected to wifi and other times it is on 4G.
I know this is a phone issue and not a network issue because it happens to me when I am at home and at work, I connect the the wireless router in both places.
I select it and it brings me to the web.how to stop getting this notification.

I have two android devices at home, a HTC One S and a Nexus 7(2012). The problem is that when I am using one or another occasionally the wi-fi will simply stop working. I'm still getting full signal in the notification bar, but either Chrome or whatever app that is using the wi-fi will stop retrieving data and eventually time-out or stay on buffering.
I have tried some things including changing the channel my wi-fi is set to from Auto to 6 and Mixed B/N/G mode to N only, but nothing seems to fix this problem except for one thing; turning the wi-fi off on one of these devices. The connections seem perfectly stable when I do this.
I also have a laptop in the house, my girlfriend comes over with her iphone, and I have an ipad from work that I occasionally bring home (I'm a teacher) and none of these devices ever have any issues, it's only the two android devices.
It's almost as it they are sharing the same wi-fi train track and only one can ride it at a time.

I perused the play store looking for an app that will notify me whenever I connect to a specific wifi network but didn't have any luck.
Why I'm looking for this functionality
- i'm on a wifi only plan with my carrier
- my work has a wifi network but it requires me to provide login credentials before it is useable, so I'll be connected to their wifi network but I often forget to login to make it useable.

I am looking for an app that automatically switches off the cellular radio when wifi is connected and switches it back on when wifi loses connection. I'm not talking about the APN data connection which already does that, I'm talking about the regular cell phone connection.
According to my lack of results searching through the forums, Market, and Google, such an app does not exist yet. Currently the best app I've found to do anything remotely like this is the Airplane Mode Wi-Fi app, which is a manual switch and a slightly cumbersome one at that, not nearly good enough for how often I go in and out of wifi.
The reason I ask for this is because I use Google Voice with SIP and a prepaid plan. I want to use SIP as much as possible to save my prepaid minutes for when I really need them. When wifi and cell are both connected with Sipdroid running and I receive a call, they both ring at the same time. To be sure I don't accidentally use prepaid, I usually reject the call and call back over SIP, which is slightly annoying for both me and the caller.

I would like to have the cell network type displayed while I am connected to WiFi in the status bar signal cluster. Currently, once you connect to WiFi, the LTE, H, E, etc, go away; I'd like them to stay.
I can move the WiFi icon over to make room for the type icon (LTE, H, E, etc) just by deleting "android:layout_marginRight="-6.0dip"" at the end of the "id/wifi_combo" line in res/layout/signal_cluster_view.xml in SystemUI.apk.
Where is the function that turns off that cell type icon when WiFi is connected in SystemUI.apk? I know the system can detect the type of network whilst WiFi is connected, it's just a matter for forcing that icon to stay displayed.
I am trying this on Cyanogenmod 11.

I know that there is a hack to remove the "Wifi Network Is Available" message but that is not what I am asking here.
