General :: Force Different Rendering Resolution In Android Apps?
Apr 14, 2013
Is it possible to force specific apps to render themselves in smaller resolution than the native (device's) one and telling the device to rescale them? I'm talking specifically about old Gameloft games that don't work on new devices anymore due to no xhdpi support.
I managed to run Modern Combat 2 on LG Nexus 4 (mako) but it has severe bugs with touch area and aiming that make the game unplayable.
I wouldn't mind playing this game in lower resolution rescaled to fit the entire screen as long as it would actually work (MC2 has smoother gameplay than any other game in the series + smaller maps = better multiplayer experience when there is not much time to play).

Is it just me and my device, or is the Google Plus app rubbish for everyone? Jitters and lags just when scrolling down the feed. I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S3, and the problem persists across ROMs, and enabling/disabling "Force GPU rendering" makes no difference.

Any specific reason for "force gpu rendering" to be enabled in the settings on most of these jellybean Roms?
I was reading that this is an old hack for ICS and under, and with jellybean this disables important CPU optimizations and is unnecessary.

I own a galaxy nexus and the performance of a few HD games are under my expectations, even with a bus overclocked kernel! (i've tried many, to no use )
Is there is a way to force selected apps to run at a lower screen resolution? say 540x960? i don't mind if it doesn't run in full screen, i just prefer a constant 60FPS over a few extra details!

In general, can we change some properties to make a given app run on a lower than native resolution?I think it should be totally possible, since phone come in various aspect ratios and resolutions. So the app detects the screen and resolution, and adopts accordingly.Gensoid does that in-app.Double,original size,strech,etc....
For instance,if we have a game on a 1920x1080 screen, but the GPU struggles to keep the framerate,we lower it to 960x540,the game still looks fine, because we get 1:2 resolution, and far fewer pixels to push.I think there should be an app for that.

My current mobile phone is an LG/Sprint Optimus S, whose camera has 3.2 mpx resolution. My previous (and first) smart phone was an HTC Pure which runs Windows Mobile 6.5 and is perhaps better known as the Topaz, Pure being its AT&T edition. The camera on that phone does 5.0 mpx, so it's obviously much better. Even on just the small device screens, you can see the quality difference at a glance.
For a particular objective, I need to be able to take good pictures on the go, but have the Internet connection provided by my current Android device. In other words, I want to take pictures with the HTC, beam them to my Optimus, and then use that to send out the pictures. I was having a bit of trouble getting the devices to work well together in their native states, so I flashed a version of Froyo onto the old HTC. Having done that, I found that the Bluetooth connection between the devices worked quite well. But when I try to use one of the Android camera apps to take pictures on the HTC, it's not taking full advantage of the lens' capability. The photos show up on the screen about the size of a large postage stamp; in fact not much bigger than a thumbnail picture.
Do Android camera apps not work at any better resolution than 3.2?

I have 4 boot animations that I want to convert to work on my Nexus 10 full screen.
Also, how to be able to edit [URL] to show 10 instead of 4 or completly remove the number so it works nicely on both my Nexus 4 and Nexus 10.

So I have been flashing a couple of roms lately and everytime I flash a rom, the new ROM sees all the apps that are installed. However, it's not doing that anymore and I have 1GB left of storage with no apps installed. Is there a way to force android to see these apps? If not, is there a way to just wipe all of the app data that is on there so I can start over?
I just tried a factory reset and it didn't erase anything

Last night, one of my apps, flow free, wasn't working properly, and then it forced closed, then I think most of my apps did, like Samsung homepage, gmail, software update, android phone, log provider etc. I have a Samsung galaxy y Gt-S5360T, I haven't changed anything like ROM so I think it will still be in stock rom. After these apps have forced closed, it will turn off, we'll more its like it just turns itself on again. And then the problem just starts over. While this is happening, I can't really do anything, well when the force close thing isn't up, then sometimes I can start going into things, but never get a chance to do anything because the force close things either take me back to the home menu, or it turns off, sometimes, instead of having apps on the first page, and the call log, contact book, and messaging on the bottom, it just has the menu key, that's it. And even when I haven't unlocked it, it turns itself off and on again.
My SIM card had a problem, so I recently changed that to a blank and had it working with my old number and balance. And because of this, it was last night, I saved my contacts to my phone, rather than my SIM card.
Is there any way of fixing this( have already tried turning it off and on, and taking the battery out and putting it back in again) without losing my photos, songs, saved messages and contacts? And if not, is there any way of saving them to something else, even though my phone won't let me do anything? So what can I do?

I was wondering why Android keeps lagging a bit. I mean, quadcore should be fast enough to stop that from happening right? So I started Googling.
I got this article: [URL] .....
Basically it says this: Android's UI rendering thread does not work in real-time (the priority is not set at that), unlike iOS'. It's just about the one thing that's still better about iOS in my opinion.
How to make this thread render in real-time?

One of the feature on cyanogenmod most useful to me was the ability to kill any app via the long press of the back button..
Now I'm using a (beta) rom of Ice Cream and missing this feature so much.
Is there any app or other way to add this? obviously the phone (HTC Desire) is rooted and s-off.

I have a program that should work on Android 1.5, but when it's run on newer devices with higher resolution screens, it should support the full resolution and not emulate a lower resolution screen. As far as I can tell from the documentation, this should be simple.
I just specify
code:.........
The problem is that if I tell Eclipse to compile for 1.5, it refuses to accept this. It reports an error (targetSdkVersion is an unknown tag) and refuses to compile or run. If I tell it to compile for 1.6 it works fine, of course. But if I then try to install on a 1.5 AVD, the program immediately crashes with a java.lang.VerifyError. I'm clearly missing something simple. How do I get it to compile an apk that works under 1.5, but still includes the targetSdkVersion tag?

I've a problem that is recurrent in the Galaxy S forum... and maybe somewhere else!
When I do a backup with TB, it goes fine.
Then I flash a new rom, restore with TB. When app is restored, everything's fine, but when I restore data, every app is force closing... This is really annoying if I want to get back my apps settings...

Is it just me or are 99% of applications are very low resolution and all the pictures look very dull and fuzzy.
The new facebook update looks crisper, so the phone cleary has the capabilities but why aren't developers making apps to the highest resolution?

I am a Linux enthusiastic and now using the most awesome mobile operating system Android ICS.
My mobile phone is Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman wt19i. Recently I installed CYANOGEN MOD 9 which I think the best available rom from the performance perspectives.
But one problem popped out.
The problem is this Rom can't render Indic languages well.
The fonts are not perfect.
The encoding is set to UTF 8, but still it can't render the BENGALI LANGUAGE LIKE THAT OF SONY ERICSSON STOCK ROMS.

Really sorry for all the screenshots. I own a Nexus One and Dell Streak and one thing that I find disappointing is that some apps don't run at the native resolution on the Nexus which makes things look blurry compared to my Streak. Examples: (all screenshots taken with the Android SDK) Now, I understand that the PenTile display will have an effect on image quality Vs my Streak but why does the N1 seem to be rendering things in a lower resolution compared to my Streak?

I'm considering changing my phone (quite old Motorola) with something from the 21 century..While looking for one (HTC), I found, that only Tattoo can fit in my budget. There are, however, couple of question I'd like to ask:
Does Tattoo support offline GPS navigation (and if so - can you, please, suggest a app for this). Most of what google has to say about this is related to Google maps (obviously), but it looks like this can't be done there. And i really don't see the point having a GPS antenna that requires Wi-fi/data connection in additionIs the lower resolution / screen really such a pain for the apps in the market. Are there any problems with the all-day apps, that one needs?I might have a chance to buy a second hand Iphone 3g 16 for 40-50 euro higher price. Can you advise what's the better choice? I'm not sure about the condition of the iphone, but lets say it has only cosmetic problems, which doesn't bother me.

Google suggests in Dev Guide that we set the API level as low as possible to cover most of the devices. Somebody recently pointed out in my app that when they are typing in the password the automatic suggestions pop up making it annoying. I found out the solution, but is only available in API level 3.I guess my question is, are there devices out there that use Android 1.1 still?

Unfortunately, I've had to uninstall several apps that I liked because they force start on boot and my Droid was becoming completely laggy because of too many apps starting on boot. I understand that some apps/widgets need to start on boot, but others its completely unnecessary. At a minimum, make an option in settings to let the user decide if we want it to start on boot up.
I just uninstalled Note Everything, Estrong File manager and Weatherbug because they were starting on boot. I love MixZing and I am kind of annoyed that it starts on boot, but its an app I "need" so I can't uninstall it. I'll probably email all these devs and ask about giving the option not to start on boot.

There's a decent amount of information out there on the Activity lifecycle. But I'm surprised how difficult it is to find a comprehensive description of the rendering lifecycle. By that I mean the order and rules by which a tree of nested activities, views, and drawables get to be sized and drawn to the screen, and the points at which a developer can modify rendering behavior.

I need to render video on android. I got sw decoder which decodes stream to YUV or RGB with very reasonable cpu usage, but so far haven't found a nice way how to render frames.
I have tried 3 methods so far: 1) using opengl from native code: * create a texture of type GL_TEXTURE_2D * set coordinates to fill full opengl rendering area * to render a frame update the texture with glTexSubImage2D or glTexImage2D function (more or less the same method that is used in vlc media player)
With this method the performance is most terrible.. VGA rendering @5..7FPS uses up 100% of nexus one cpu!
2) rendering with canvas function Canvas.drawBitmap(int[] colors, int offset, int stride, int x, int y, int width, int height, boolean hasAlpha, Paint paint)Was hoping to use this via JNI. First i just made a simple perfo test: * colors array was initialized in java code * then I just called mSurfaceHolder.lockCanvas(); canvas.drawBitmap(colors, ... ); mSurfaceHolder.unlockCanvasAndPost(canvas); in sequence
Perfo is better than with opengl - VGA@30FPS uses up 40% of nexus one- s cpu...
3) Rendering with canvas function Canvas.drawBitmap(Bitmap bitmap, float left, float top, Paint paint), while updating bitmap in native code * in java code i do:
CODE:.......
To get native pointer to memory (need to link to native android library libskia.so to get these functions) * copy or decode the video frame to this memory
With this method i get only 10% cpu usage when doing VGA@30fps... but lets face it - its a hack which may break in future. Am I missing something or there really isn't any better way to render video? for example some opengl extension function etc..?
