Detect That Service Was Stopped / Resumed By Screen Lock?
Mar 12, 2013
I'm coding a service which does a its job once in every 10 minutes. Works fine. However, when a screen lock gets activated, the service is stopped (which is normal I've found out and I'm find with that). But when the screeen is unlocked again, the 10-minute interval could be already over and I want the service to do the job immediatelly. But... how can I detect that the service was awaken? I schedule the tasks with handler.postAtTime() method.

I'm developing an Activity that does some of its own state management. I'm trying to differentiate the following onResume cases:
New launch
task switch (home button long-click)
resume after other activity in the same application
wake-up after sleep
orientation change
Is there something in the Activity's intent, or elsewhere, that can help me differentiate these?
For the curious and some context... I'd like to preserve my internal history stack on 4 & 5. On cases 2 & 3, I would preserve the same current page, but erase the history (allow the normal back button functionality to take over at that point). Case 1 would initialize to the activity's internal start page (and can be detected easily enough with some help from ocCreate).

I need to know when the user is panning the map so I can check if they've panned outside of the initial radius that I fetch data from the API with when the app launches. If the user pans outside this radius, when they stop panning I will get the new center point of the map and fetch new data with that geo-point. So far I can't find anything in the Google Maps API docs [and I've inspected the entire class tree] that notifies developers when any animation actions are occurring or completed.. It seems weird that Google wouldn't give us some sort of event listener or protected method to override on the MapView or something to do this.
I looked into what methods were available to override on the View class and it does have onAnimationEnd() but I guess panning or zooming the map doesn't count as an animation or is never passed up from the MapView or something... I tried running a simple log in onAnimationEnd() and it is never being called. Searching the interwebs gave me nothing but some never-successfully-answered posts.

I want to be able to detect the phone lock event. When my app is running, if I press the red button (call end button/power button), the phone gets locked and the screen goes blank. I want to be able to detect this event, is it possible?

I want to create an app or background service that just listens for the launch of a 'default' app, say Contacts or the built-in Gmail app. If the contact app is clicked, I want to transfer control to my app temporarily (e.g. present a Yes/No popup to the user or increment an internal counter of my app ) and then redirect the user back to the app that was clicked. I want to do this only for a couple of 'well-known' built-in default apps, not any third party apps..

I have gone through many threads in this group about avoiding the use of everlasting Services, Timer/TimerTask sleep issues and detecting phone calls, but not finding the answers I am looking for this app, I will really appreciate any help you can provide me. I am working on an App to detect incoming calls and when the call time is equal to 5 minutes indicate the user by vibrating the phone. In my strategy I am creating a Receiver that listens for RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED action and launch an everlasting Service which sets up a PhoneState Listener.
1) Is there any other strategy to be always listening for incoming calls and thus avoide to using an on boot created Service? (besides the Service eventually gets killed and I am not able to detect incoming calls) A first approach I took here was setting up a Timer and TimerTask when CALL_STATE_RINGING state was detected and after 5 min (if the call continues) vibrate the phone for 2 seconds. However sometimes the timer phone vibrates after an hour a call was placed (the vibration happens in the run() TimerTask method. I know Android can go to sleep and that could be the reason my timer is not run on time but 2) How can Android be slept if I am in a call? Is the call just handled by the modem or how come? Next, to overcome this issue I tried preventing the Service from going to sleep by putting it in foreground state calling startForeground (NOTIFICATION_ID , notification), still the same behaviour the timer is run long after the call was placed 3) does startForeground prevent Android going to sleep or it is just aimed to keep the Service's process in memory? 4) A wake lock would do this job ? (I have not tried this) Encouraged by many post I tried using an Alarm and it works (thought I do not want to use it because I think it should be possible to accomplish with something lighter) but when the phone vibrates it just keeps vibrating till I remove the phone from my cheek (the screen is turned on again) 5) Why? Is it that Android started vibrating the phone and then went to sleep? so the vibration is turned off when Android awakes, when the screen is turned on again? 6? Ideas of how to stop the timer?

I have a service that will monitor location changes daily. What I know so far that to start a service at boot, I have to follow the linked tutorial. This way I can get the service started at boot, but to save battery I need it only between 9am-9pm.
Question is pretty simple, so I will repeat:
How can I ensure a service is started at 9am and stopped 9pm every day?

I'm trying to do something after scrolling stopped. So, I tried using OnScrollListener#onScrollStateChanged(SCROLL_STATE_IDLE) to detect when the scrolling stopped(either TOUCH_SCROLL or FLING)(at 1.5 it's runs as i expect).
But when it runs on 2.0, onScrollStateChanged can't received the event after releasing the finger. Is there any callback or anyway to detect that event?

My Eris recently stopped getting 3G (or even 1x) service. When I try turning mobile network on it takes a long time like its searching then says it is on but when you go into "about phone" and look at mobile network it says it is not connected and there is no 3G or 1x display in the status bar. I am currently at school in the bay area and it worked for the first few days I was here, not sure exactly when it stopped cuz I mostly use wireless but noticed it when I wanted to do something off wireless. Pretty sure it is not a coverage issue because my friend with a moto droid gets 3G and it is almost as fast as his wireless connection at full bars. Also now I cant send or receive MMS due to this (apparently cant transmit over WiFi or voice signal), making my smart phone less useful than a dumb phone.

I am plan B and AVG security installed, both don't always work, I have pattern lock on the phone but even in pattern lock mode when i press and hold power button the phone gives me option to shutdown.
If someone steals my phone they will be able to shut it off without unlocking it since holding down power button still works. So is there a way to lock the power button from shutting off phone when the phone is in pattern unlock mode?

Is there a way to have a phone lock on the Desire, in the way it is used on "normal" phones? What I mean is that I need a phone lock for security reasons - however it is a pain to use it every time I turn the screen on. Is there a way to have it work only when you turn the phone on? Right now if yu don't have a phone/screen lock security set if someone steals your phone they take out the sim card and use the phone normally ... if you do have it, then you must use the password every time you want to use the phone (I hate it). I know the best thing is to have a secured access but I was just wandering if it was possible to do seomething different?

I am using an Application object to store app-wide instance data--data that I need to remain in existence for the entire lifetime of the app, so the Application class seems like the proper place to put it. I have just finished reading this thread http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa... that goes into pretty good detail and receives confirmation from Googler hackbod as to how the Application class performs--and from that info it seems this strange behavior I am receiving should not be happening...
Basically, every once in a while when I resume my app in any of its Activities (it is still running in memory so onCreate is not called) I get NullPointerExceptions because instance variables in my Application class are returning null when I request them from my Activity (via a getter method in my custom Application class). It seems as if sometimes Android saves the states of my Activities but deletes all my instance variable data... This can't be an Android problem--there must be something wrong with my code.
Has anyone else ever ran into an issue of this kind? Any ideas as to what may be causing this? I'm not going to post my code here as that won't help anyone, but hopefully someone can point me in some helpful directions.

I have an Android app modeled after the LunarLander example by Google.
I am debugging it on a real device, (Motorola Droid) with Android 2.0.
When the orientation changes, the program crashes on a null pointer Exception.
Logcat from just before crash:
CODE:.............
The first line that worries me is "Something wrong here" at 24:38.620. I have no idea what it means, But I think its due to me not reacting properly to the screen change.
Next I get a debug message that I printed myself from within my own method surfaceChanged() about the new surface dimensions.
Then I print out debug message about whether flies was null. flies is the field that eventually causes the NullPointerException. Its created once, and never written to again for the rest of the program. I know that it was not null before the crash, because it was read several times.
Does anyone have a clue how my private member variable came to be null just by these clues?
I would include code but there is a lot of it and I don't know what would be relevant.

I'm testing how my app behaves when killed by the OS due to low memory conditions. I always have three activities on the stack, like: A B C (then C launches maps or some other heavy process)
when my app is killed, and I return to it, C starts itself up again ok. When I hit the back button to go to B, I [sometimes] get an exception thrown which I can't trace. Output is below. I don't know where to go from here. I've only seen one other post mentioning this exception, but it was related to a reproducable error when rotating the device. This only happens sometimes.

I recently bought a HTC Desire which I've become exceedingly fond of.I've read (and been told by a colleague who owns a HTC Legend) that wifi should automatically turn off while the screen is off to conserve battery. I have the impression that I should be able to see the wifi icon turn on as I turn on the screen and unlock the phone. However, I haven't noticed that happening: The icon seems to just be on always.I have then tried observing my router's DHCP table when the the screen is off, but I haven't observed the entry for my phone disappearing (and I don't really know how much time has to pass before the table not showing my phone. Are there any settings that can cause this behaviour? What about programs? I current use smart monitor to log data usage as well as locale (using a SSID plugin and not the locale "location" condition). The only services I can see apart from those I think are OS services, are the ones for locale, smart monitor lite and the SSID plugin.

I'm writing a customized view similar to Grid which will be used to hold a large amount of images. I'm using ImageButton to display the images, and I only want to load images onto the buttons once they are on the screen (and just display a static background image when they are not). The reason for it is that I'm fetching images from some back-end service and I only want to fetch them when the buttons are on the screen. To do that, I'd like to know if the widget is on the screen. Is it possible to detect if a widget like button is on/off screen? If not, any suggestions on how to achieve what I'm trying to do?

I have a motion listener to detect finger down, finger drag, and finger up. I start my action at finger down and finish my action at finger up. When the action is finished, I store it in a stack for allowing undo. My problem is that if I don't get a finger up event, I can't finish my action to add it to the stack for undo.
How can I detect that the user's finger has left the screen?
I tried using the emulator to see if getEdgeFlags() ever returned anything useful, and the result was always 0.
Basically, if a finger leaves the screen, then nothing is touching the screen anymore and I would like to detect that as a finger up event. How can I do this?
