Android :: Sucks At Multitasking - Laggy ?

Dec 3, 2009

I seem to be realizing more and more every day that android actually really sucks at multitasking. What is up with that? The pre makes me rather jealous in that respect. Sure, it's usually not that big of a deal but it just should be better. It seems like all the apps I don't want to keep running do, and the ones that I do, don't. Any game will keep running after I'm done with it(and cannot be closed without the use of a 3rd party task killer - that's just pitiful) but if I want to look something up while I'm writing an email or a text message I have to save it as a draft. That just doesn't make any sense. The least google can do is include a task manager. If I didn't have advanced task manager, my phone would be laggy as hell because about half of my apps start when I start up my phone for no apparent reason and keep running. I can use advanced task manager and that's all well and good but I shouldn't HAVE to. Personally, this seems like a fairly big flaw to me. I love android and I'm sure I'll stick with it but I'd really really like to seem something similar to the "cards" idea with the pre. I love to make fun of the iPhone for not being able to multitask but that's almost hard to do with the state android is in right now.

Android :: Web Browsing Sucks

Sep 20, 2010

First and foremost is the internet browser

1.- the zoom sucks you can zoom with gestures and all but the way it does it sucks. if you pinch slightly it should zoom by a small amount. in other world i can not zoom in to cover what i want to, it zoom either way pass were i want or completely zooms out. of course this i think is just a programming issue of not taking into consideration of how big is the pinch. This is frustrating me so much.

2.- when you zoom the browser relays out the entire page. which is completely wrong it should not happen. when say zooming in on a column of text that you think can be better read by zooming in the browser does a re-layout and now my text is all over the place. the expectation is the you are zooming into a small portion of the webpage not that you are changing the dimensions of the page or object you are zooming in (<DIV>,<p>,<SPAN> or which ever). they should stay still and let me get a bigger view of the window that i'm trying to view. the fix here would be to zoom in without the weird re-layout. it has sucked so much that what I'm doing is caring my iPhone just to browser the web and my droid for all the rest.

Android :: Multitasking / Task Killing Apps

Feb 17, 2010

I am considering getting a Motorola Milestone, which should ship with Android 2.something.I have a Nokia, and I really like the multitasking of the Symbian environment. How is it going to be different with Android? Is it a true multitasking os like Symbian or is it not, like the iphone? How do I switch from one application to another? Is there a button which shows all running apps? I read comments that, on some phones, switching from the web browser to another app and then back to the browser causes the page to reload from scratch. Is this still true or was it a limitation of older versions? Is there a task killer? I read very contradicting opinions on this, but I must say I do not understand why I should leave open an app I don't need, and how much an app left open uses system resources (battery life and RAM): I would have thought that its impact on system performance might have been minimal, but still > 0, right? Then why not close it altogether? Or am I missing something here?

HTC EVO 4G : Android Multitasking / Related To Task Killers

Jun 28, 2010

I just read this article:

Android Developers Blog: Multitasking the Android Way

and it talks about how Android itself handles multitasking. The problem I'm running into is this: I stopped using Advanced Task Killer because people are saying that it's not healthy for your device, which makes sense to me as it seems like you're using CTRL ALT DELETE to close a program every time, and that just doesn't seem like a good idea.I understand that this isn't windows and it works completely different, but I still stopped using it because it seemed a bit harsh. After reading the above article I realize that this is how Android itself closes apps, by "brutally killing them" as the article says.If this is how Android itself closes apps when it needs more memory, why are task killers not a good idea?
If somebody could dumb it down for me so I can understand I'd appreciate it, as I'm a total Android n00b.

Android :: GMAIL System Sucks

Apr 13, 2010

I own an HTC hero. Yes it has great apps, is very functional, and has a wonderful feel in the hand but the most upsetting part about his phone and ALL android phones is how easy they can become bricks. The phone was working great no problems. Then someone compromised my gmail account. They changed my password and password reset programs. The phone became useless. I was locked out of my phone because the GMAIL system sucks.

I finally spoke to 2 people at google 650 253 0000 and 310 460 4000. No one was able to help me. They are not "authorized to transfer people to other departments or give out contact phone numbers". The google reset password program requires you to input the most email'd address into a form... not a good feature for a PHONE! NONE OF THE INFORMATION IS STORED ON THE MEM CARD. Android does not do that? So it's a great phone when it works. When someone hacks into your email account, your phone is worthless.

Android :: Good For Enterprise SUCKS My Battery

Sep 1, 2010

I need to use GFE for my work, however, as soon as I install this app my battery use went from little over 24 hours to about 6 hours. This dam application just won't stop checking for the emails and constantly keeping my phone active. I tried killing it via Task Killer, via managing applications and all forsaken, as this thing like a locust keeps coming back to life and suck the life out of my battery.
Anyone came up with the idea how I can kill GFE for good and activate it back when I need it?I just upgraded my Incredible to 2.2 and it seems that it has two app managing native tools - "manage applications" and "running services" both show apps that are currenlty running. I tried killing GFE using both and still unsuccessful .

Android :: Stock / Vanilla Kind Of Sucks

Nov 9, 2010

its not that bad but in all honesty, I found it to be pretty bland and boring (almost ugly). It also lacks many nice features found on other phones with manufactuer overlays, (This is probably the biggest reason why they put those overlays on top of stock android). Obviously the best thing about it of course is the quicker updates (in most cases). But other than that, my experience with stock was not too fun compared to using now Launcher Pro overtop of just plain stock and even now over TW (I know, i know, people hate TW).

Just had to put this out there. (At work TBC)

General :: HTC One S - How Does Multitasking Work

Apr 27, 2012

I bought the HTC One S and it is my first android device.

How multitasking actually works and how to close apps. For example I am playing a game then I press the multitasking button to select the webbrowser. Well if I immediately switch back to the game again, it will resume where I left it. But if I wait a little bit longer and then switch back, it will automatically start the app from new. I lose all my progress. This happens so often and I am think this is not multitasking at all.

Also when I swipe to close an in multitasking mode, it just doesn't close the app. For example I am using navigation but then I don't need it anymore. I press the multitasking button, swipe up to close the up. And then I noticed it isn't closed at all but there is no app for it when I enter multitasking mode. I'd have to actually open the app and manually close the app from inside to actually make it quit.

Android :: Flash Sucks - Kills Battery Life And Heats Up

Jun 27, 2010

I have not had one good experience with Flash so far. Its laggy. The rollover stuff really is a pain. It slows down the whole phone. Kills battery life and heats up my phone enough to fry an egg. Its deja vu. I hate Apple and I hate Steve Jobs, and I was a huge supporter of Flash coming to Android, but frankly, its terribly disappointing. The tap to interact thing is really annoying and doesn't work. I tried to watch the World Cup game and it was off center in full screen mode and very laggy. since we already have youtube and hulu won't let us watch their stuff, it seems that 95% percent of Flash really is ads. Also, I tried to watch a video in a flash player and i couldn't change the volume or pause it. And when scrolling, any flash content lags in movement and slows down the whole page. Am I the only one disappointed? I mean, I know its only a beta but they have a long way to go for me to consider keeping it installed on a regular basis.

HTC Magic :: Closing Applications - MultiTasking

Feb 11, 2010

I have noticed (since getting a Task Manager) that apps that I run do not all seem to quit when I exit. For example, I load up an application, and then finish by using the back key, which takes me back to the 'desktop'.

When I then load up task manager I find that the app is usually still listed. Also I will usually find setting and a number of other apps listed. nb. These are Apps and not services.

As a new Magic user I wonder if I am doing something wrong or maybe not closing apps correctly. Some have an 'exit' entry in the context menu, but many others do not, and for these maybe I am not correctly closing them when I think I have by using the back key.

Also, does the Magic multi-task. Is there a way to switch between running applications?

All this seems that it should be obvious, but even after downloading the full user guide pdf, I am still no wiser on the subject.

Finally, is it true that to use the alarm clock I have to leave the phone powered up? My old Nokias used an alarm that worked when the phone was powered off, and even gave the option to turn the phpne on when the alarm went off. I assume this isn't possible with Android/Magic?

HTC Hero :: Multitasking - Syncing With Accounts

Got the pre about a month ago and still have a few days to return it. I am seriously considering the hero having had a G1 and digging that before i was sucked into the iphone web (at&t bleeps). A couple questions that will either seal/break the deal: can you multitask on the hero as you can in the pre? i-e: have pandora going while you check email and answer a text? pre's web OS allows syncing with all three of my accounts: gmail, yahoo and hotmail. notifications for all three show up along with threaded conversations w/ various contacts. Can the hero also do this? or is yahoo/hotmail restricted as it they are on the iphone?

General :: Multitasking Button Remap (HOX And GS3)

Jun 17, 2012

For those making roms for the HTC One series, could you re-re-map the hardware buttons so that the recent apps button pulls up the recent apps (normal ics behavior), and then a long press on the recent apps button maps to the menu button?

My reasoning, is eventually, the "menu" button is something that will get obsoleted, so mapping it as a secondary action (i.e. long press) is a better approach than the current mapping on some of the Roms out there (like cm9). Personally, I'm not a fan of long-presses, so I prefer it for functions I hardly use (like menu).

As for the Gs3, I recommend mapping the 'menu' button to the 'recent apps', and a long press to the menu function (instead of long pressing the home button for recent apps). Again, my reasoning is, when the menu button, eventually gets obsoleted, it becomes pointless having the physical menu button do nothing.

Android :: Alternative Launchers Laggy

Sep 13, 2010

I have tried using both launcher pro and ADW launcher, who have a reputation of being light launchers, and no matter how much I mess about with the settings, I always experience the same thing:

1: They are often not fluid when swiping screens, showing a little sign of lag or sluggishness that you do not experience with the Sense UI and which drives me crazy.

2: When unlocking the phones, the first swipe is always followed by a noticeable amount of latency.

This bothers me quite a bit, because I really like these launchers and I know of no other way to get the (from my POV) main advantage behind them (the dock).Any advice? I have tried messing about with the memory settings etc to no avail.

HTC Incredible :: YouTube App Sucks?

May 30, 2010

At first I thought it looked decent since the interface was clean and the HQ videos looked good. But now the more and more I use it I realize how much it sucks. To start, you can't do ANYTHING while watching a current video without it stopping. So if you want to comment on the video, read it's info, or put your phone on sleep, the video stops playing.

Because of this it makes YouTube useless for music. YouTube is one of the best music sites out there (since almost any song is uploaded in video form), but because you can't put the phone on sleep or do something else while it's playing it's unusable. Why would I stare at an image on my screen at full brightness for 5 minutes while listening to a song? It's a battery killer and makes no sense. Also the search feature is weaker. For some reason when I search stuff on YouTube.com I get much more results than I do on the mobile app. Lastly, you can't tweak the settings to make HQ video as the default. The low-quality videos are awful and you have to go into settings each time to change it to HQ.

HTC Hero :: Multitasking / Appalling Signal Strength

Nov 24, 2009

I am not denying the Hero is a good phone, but I really am fed up of the lag and glitches I encounter in everyday use. Yes, before I am jumped on, I have taskkiller and yes I do make sure everything is closed that I am not using, but there's no denying the phone does lag a bit even when not multitasking. It's by no means bad lag, just irritating and I have put up with it for months and I am getting tired of it. Also, the camera is practically rendered useless seeing as I don't carry a tripod round with me because it seems that's what this phone needs to take a decent, shake free shot. And no it's not my lacking camera skills, I have an A-level in photography.

Another thing is the appalling signal strength due to the aerial being in the chin section of the phone, this angers me so damn much - who the HELL makes a phone you can't hold normally because you cannot get any signal when you do so, I literally have to hold the phone on the edges or the top just for the signal to come back, wtf!? This also makes phone calls damn difficult because I often accidentally put my hand over the precious aerial whilst talking. Lastly to round it off is the app market. Yeah there are a load of decent apps, but the marketplace itself looks like a 3rd party application, the organisation is rubbish! Whilst I like the whole open source scene, I believe there should be moderation to stop all the crap that force closes automatically getting onto the market.

I don't want to get attacked now as I do like my Hero, it's just these niggles have slowly worn me down, and I am pretty fed up of it now - it takes the pleasure of using the phone away. I still believe Android has a long way to go yet, it's just lucky it will be used on so many phones in the near-future. I can see it going in a Windows direction though, so much hardware and one OS = so much that can go wrong with compatibilities, hardware etc. Not really sure whether to keep the phone now or not.

Motorola Droid :: IPhone OS 4 Will Include Multitasking

Apr 8, 2010

Does that change how you view the iPhone in comparison to the Droid or Android in general?

Personally, I still prefer Android OS over iPhone OS because of open development and customizeability (sp?). Even though some people say the iPhone UI is super-smooth, I honestly don't see much of a difference between my phone's resposiveness and my friend's iPhone (but, maybe that's just my Droid). And looking at page after page after page of icons is just super lame to me. And the ONE advantage that iPhone has over Android (apps and games) won't be an advantage for long because:

A) Android is RAPIDLY catching up to iPhone in terms of sheer number of apps.

B) Android has more free apps (by far) than any other mobile OS (something like 58% I believe)

C) Android allows apps from "unknown sources", which is huge in my opinion.

With all of that in mind, I can't think of anything major that the iPhone has over Android. Granted, the iPhone is an awesome device and was a very innovative product but it's definitely not for me. Some would argue that the iPhone is better because it has iTunes and iPod integrated seamlessly but is that really a big deal? Just as long as Android is MP3 capable and has awesome 3rd party apps like "3" or bTunes (I think that's the name of it), who cares about having a fully integrated iPod?
