Android :: Simple Shape Recognition Libraries For Java
Mar 16, 2010
I am working on a on-screen keyboard for Android, and I need to recognize starting points, turning points and end points of lines drawn by the user on the keyboard. A simple straightening function would be nice, as it is difficult to draw a perfectly straight line even with a stylus, not to mention finger-only touchscreens today. What I am trying to write is something like Swype. Any good libraries that I can use or make reference to?

As I am very pissed off of using the emulator to develop any Java class, I thought of setting up a project in Eclipse and instead of the usual JRE I linked to the Android.jar (version 2.1) that usually the Android projects link to. I don't mean to use this to develop Layouts or other specific platform things, I was just trying to create a class that uses HttpClient.
It miserably crashes like this.
CODE:.............
I mean I'd like to develop libraries (and test them) so that when I go to the emulator I don't have to deal with them. Is there a good way to do this? This seems not to work for some reason.

I'm attempting to port a normal Java program over to Android, however I am having a problem with a huge number of missing Java packages (e.g., Android Java does not have java.lang.management). Is there a way for me to work around this, such as by adding the Java modules that I need?

I currently have an application using the libraries swing, swing.table, and awt on a java applet that I have running. I want to know what are the steps to get the application running as a native android app. I heard that I could use programs like Phonegap to just release a web based app for multiple platforms, but I am new to Android Programming (so far I just made a Hello Android app). I searched swing and awt, but I could not find any useful info.

Does anyone know of any video encoding/decoding libraries written entirely in java? Bonus points if it works on Android. I'm trying to write a video decoding application for android, where I have access to the frame level decoding functions (which is absent in the android API MediaPlayer class)

Is there any Java validator libraries i can use to validate text input from an android app?
i know that in spring there are validators for various different types such as checking if a value is a int, if a value is a valid email, etc etc.
Anything similar in core Java or even android?
cheers in advance. i don't want to re-invent the wheel if its already been implemented. i could always sue Java reg expressions to construct my own ones but was wondering if their was one done specifically for email formats.

I want to have a elmenent with a 2 color border outline. I can do a single color outline using the element, but this only allows me to draw a single line. I tried using 2 elements within my but that didnt work either. Is there a way to either draw a shape within a shape or draw 2 lines around my shape (which has rounded corners btw).

Could someone please suggest me a good/efficient way to communicate with the server. I could think of two options 1) Use http post methods to send data to a php script at the server which would later call the google api's written in another java program (jar)or use php to use google api's (if its possible) to find nearby restaurants and send the list back to client. 2) Use simple java socket programming. The server has a jar file that supports multi threading and it does the job of finding restaurants and sending the list.

I've been contemplating (re)building an app on iPad for some time, where I would use objective-C and DSMI to send MIDI signals to a host computer. This is not bad (I mean, except for actually writing the app). Now I'm contemplating perhaps developing the app for Android tablets (TBA).In Java, what options are available for MIDI message communication? I'm quite familiar with javax.sound.midi, but then I would need a virtual MIDI port to send messages to the host.On the other hand, if the app were done in Adobe AIR, what options would I have available for communicating with MIDI?Obviously another option is to send/receive messages over a TCP/IP socket to a Java host, and talk that way, but it sounds a tad cumbersome... or perhaps not? DSMI does use a host program, after all.

I am trying to display a dialog box in a simple Java class that is called from my main Activity but not successful. Please help me to figure it out.
I am passing the required values as parametrs.
I have two class: class MainActivity extends Activity :: Main *starting point *of Application class ShowMyDialog :: a simple java program In which I *generate an URl* and *display a dialog with WebView*.
I am passing the Acitivity from my MainActivity to this class as a parameter in function.
But I am *unable to call* the onCreateDialog method that I have *defined in the simple java class.
However, If I define the *onCreateDialog method in MainActivity, I am able to display it successfully.
What Should I pass as Parameter to the non Activity class from MainActivity class so that I am able to display the dialog as defined by showdialog method in JAVA class ???*

I'm writing an Android App and I'm looking for the fastest (In terms of setup) way for me to send data to a server and receive information back on request. We're talking basic stuff. I have a log file which tells me how a user is using my application (In beta, I wouldn't runin a user experience by constantly logging usually) and I want to communicate that to my server (That I haven't setup).
I don't need security, I don't need high throughput or concurrent connections (I have 3 phones to play with) but I do need to set it up fast! I remember back in the day that setting up XAMPP was particularly brainless, then maybe I could use PHP to send the file from the phone to the Server? The Server would ideally be able to respond to a GET which would allow me to send back some SQL statements which ultimately affect the UI. (It's meant to adapt the presented options depending on those most commonly used).
So there you have it, I used PHP about 4 years ago and will go down that route if it's the best but if there's some kind of new fangled port open closing binary streaming singing and dancing method that has superseeded that option I would love to know. This tutorial seems useful but I don't really need object serialization, just text files back and forth, compressed naturally. Android comes with the Apache HTTP Client 4.0 built in as well as java.net.URL and java.net.HttpUrlConnection, I'd rather not add too much bult to my App with third party libraries.

How to I properly parameterize the speech recognizer so that it can more easily recognize the words that the user will probably say?
As far as I can tell there is no way.
I believe this site is wrong: http://www.4feets.com/2009/04/speech-recognition-in-android-sdk-15/
CODE:............
Will give a hint to the recognizer that you might say those words. However, it appears to do absolutely nothing. It also conflicts with the google documentation which says:
"An ArrayList of the potential results when performing ACTION_RECOGNIZE_SPEECH. Only present when RESULT_OK is returned." This hints that the array is a return value NOT an input.
To test this out try adding: ArrayList< String > potentialResults = new ArrayList< String >(); potentialResults.add("cumin"); and try to get the speech recognizer to recognize it. You will find it very difficult.
How to properly control the speech recognizer?

I have a button on my app that I want to change the color of during different states of my application. However when I call btn.setBackgroundColor(Color.GREEN); the shape of the button changes. The rounded edges go away and I get a flat looking rectangle that is green. Is there a reason the shape is changing? Is there a a way to change the button color without the shape changing?

I've created a custom toolbar using a gradient inside a shape. It looks very nice, but since we only have the option for 3 colors (startColor, centerColor, endColor) it looks very round. I would like to do a glass effect, which requires a sharp change in color in the middle. Basically I need 4 colors (startColor, justabovecenterColor, justbelowcenterColor, endColor). Now I could have two shapes sitting on top of each other to get this effect, but I don't want to do this. I'm getting into some tricky UI customization here and that would be very difficult to manage on different sized screens.

I'm trying to draw a rounded rectangle with a border around it using a class that extends ShapeDrawable (see here) and everything is working except that the shapedrawable seems to be cutting off some of the border because the shape itself doesn't extend outside those bounds. Is there not some way to offset where the shapedrawable starts drawing so that there is some padding between the bounds of the shape itself and the canvas? I have tried both ShapeDrawable.setBounds to larger than the intrinsic size of the shape and ShapeDrawable.setPadding but don't seem to be getting anywhere. Should I be subclassing Drawable instead?

text.setCompoundDrawablesWithIntrinsicBounds(0, mImagesId[position], 0, 0);
In order to add border to the ImageView I defined a shape xml that I am using as a BackgroundResource.
How can I now add the shape to the TextView image up compound ?

I'm using xml file to define progress bar. I defined padding on background shape. But this setting will be sometimes displayed correctly, sometimes not. So If I start my application or Activity with progressbar inside, there will be correctly displayed progressbar with background and 'padded' progress. Then I close my application and start it again, and, progressbar is displayed without padded background, on next start will be displayed correctly and son on ... Could you please advice possible reasons for this?
