when i call webservice on clicking button. it waits to load records on new activity and shows activity blank during that time period. can any one guide me how to show progress during that time period?

I have a service that downloads something from the Internet, it shows progress in notifications and in MyActivity (only when MyActivity is on foreground of course). How should the service post the progress to MyActivity? I know this could be done somehow with IBind but can I just simply do this in MyActivity:

If I set that activity as the MAIN, everything works fine. As soon as I use a tabhost to show the activity, I cannot show an indeterminate progress on the title bar for the tabhost activity. One way could be to have methods on the tabhost class that show the progress on it's title bar, but I do not know how to access those methods from outside the tabhost (for example, from another activity).

I have an async task that downloads the database needed for my app, while this is downloading my app cant do anything as all the data it references is in this file, i have the app waiting for the file to be downloaded but i am attempting to show a progress dialog so the user knows something is happening while they wait for this to happen.however nothing shows up i have also tried directly calling ProgressDialog.show in the pre execute and moving this to the calling activity with no luck.

However, what I am finding is that my progress dialog never even shows up. My App stalls for a moment so I know it is chugging along inside of thread t, but why doesnt my dialog appear? IF I remove the line: t.join(); Then what I find happens is that the progress dialog does show up, but my app starts stepTwo(); before what happens in the thread is complete..
I have some data I load into the database the first time a user enters my Activity, and want to show a ProgressDialog while this data is loaded for the first time. My Activity is an ExpandableListActivity and I don't create the SimpleExpandableListAdapter or call setListAdapter passing my adapter until I'm sure the data is actually there. But I face a problem that in webview I have to fix the height so thats why if html content contains less data then it wasted the space. Is there any solution to solve this problem that how can I show only same content as html has in the webview without any wasted space please help. following xml i used to draw webview is this right? It seems as though I have to set the width and the height of the control to be the same thing or else I run into alot of clipping issues. Basically, I want to have a progress bar that, once rotated, is 50dip wide and fills the screen vertically. Can anyone think of a way to do this? Also, it doesn't seem to be actually drawing the progress properly, but I will revisit that once I get the clipping sorted out.

I have used the progress dialog in order to load the contents from the server to list...But i feel that the progress bar small with "loading..." message that is used in the android market browser ( in dev phone) is better ... here is the problem iam facing..
1) i have a list of 100 names that has to be loaded on to the dev phone.....
I do as follows.....extends Activity implements ListView.OnScrollListener ...
On every request i am getting 20 items and request is sent in seperate thread and for the UI i am using progress dialog saying "Wait..getting details...." and on getting the response progress_bar.dismiss and setting to the adapter as myList.setAdapter (new MyListAdapter(this)) where MyListAdapter extends BaseAdapter....
2) Now i have 20 items in myList ... and the next request for 20 items is sent when i reach the last list item by using the onScrollStateChanged() using view.getLastVisiblePosition();
Similarly as explained above i send request in seperate thread(not the UI thread) and show the progress bar and dismiss it on the response...
But problem is on myList.setAdapter(new MyListAdapter(this)) , the list goes to the first item and the user(here i...) has to scroll back again to the 20 items to see the list..
I did all the above procedure by referring the slowAdapter example in the API DEMOS... So, here is the problem .. 1) how to show the next 20 items without going to the first item on every second request ..
2) i found that android market browser uses same scenario .. but i dont know how to generate it..
