Android :: Service - Show Progress In Activity

Jan 2, 2010

I have a service that downloads something from the Internet, it shows progress in notifications and in MyActivity (only when MyActivity is on foreground of course). How should the service post the progress to MyActivity? I know this could be done somehow with IBind but can I just simply do this in MyActivity:

MySevice.myActivity = this; startService(new Intent(....));

From MyService I can now call MyActivity's methods because I have a static reference to it in MySevice.myActivity, so I can call e.g. myActivity.sendProgress(63).

Android :: Show Progress Dialog In AsyncTask?

Aug 30, 2009

I am creating an app that show a Progress dialog in AsyncTask to inform the user while web information is being fetched. I've read there are two ways of doing this: Using handlers or creating and executing an inner class that overrides the AsyncTask class. I am trying to create and executing inner class that overrides the AsyncTask class, which runs a resource-intensive thread in the background, to provide progress updates, and reports back when finished.

On the OnCreate, I have: protected Dialog onCreateDialog(int id) { return ProgressDialog.show(ListSituation.this, "", "Loading. Please wait...", true); }

Android :: Show Indeterminate Progress In Title Bar On Tabhost?

Nov 2, 2010

I have a tabhost that contains three tabs showing three separate activities. One of those activities needs to show the indeterminate progress bar on the title bar. If I set that activity as the MAIN, everything works fine. As soon as I use a tabhost to show the activity, I cannot show an indeterminate progress on the title bar for the tabhost activity. One way could be to have methods on the tabhost class that show the progress on it's title bar, but I do not know how to access those methods from outside the tabhost (for example, from another activity).

Android :: Which Is Better Loading Of Images For ListView?

Jan 19, 2010

I am wondering if which of the two is better in loading images in a listview from web, is it by batch through some number of threads that are running simultaneously or one by one through thread queue? I have noticed (but I don't know if that is really the implementation) from the youtube app that the images are loaded by batch and it is kinda fast. Even for not only loading images but also requesting some data from the web as well. Does anyone have an idea?

Android :: Lazy Loading Images In A ListView

Dec 8, 2009

I trying a hand at ListViews and my current experiment is aimed at displaying some data in a ListView. The data to be displayed in each row is simple: an image and some text. The images come from a remote server and the textual data is hardcoded. I have a class that downloads images using AsyncTask and caches the list of images fetched as SoftReferences in a LinkedHashMap. I am also passing a reference of the view to this class, so when the image download/cache read is complete the class will set appropriate Bitmap in the view.

Android :: Turn Off Lazy Loading Of Listview

Nov 1, 2010

In my Android App I have a listview containing 30 rows, and each row consists of several textviews of which one is spannable and sometimes contains a lot of formatted text and images. Those images are loaded from the web asynchroneously: A placeholder is displayed until the image has been downloaded is then replaced by the image. Unfortunately, the rows of the listview are loaded when I scroll over them. This makes the whole thing very slow. Also, those images are loaded from the web again and again, whenever I scroll over the row. can I turn it off, that the ListView rows are loaded when I scroll over them? They should be loaded once when I start the activity and never again.

The idea is to display a placeholder image, get the actual image in the background, update the ImageView in the list when the image is available. I've tried to do this in the simplest way possible using an AsyncTask in an Adapter. The outline of that approach is below. Is it flawed? Is there an agreed approach to handling this common task? Android :: Using Progress Bar Ends Up In Not Populating List View

Jul 26, 2010

I am using a progress bar in android, so that till my data is loaded, user is getting a proper feedback of what is going on.

The code for the bar is below:

CODE:............

The setSelected() method is inserting data into an array list, and then creating an array adapter and then using a list view to show those items. so when I put the setSelected() method in progress bar, it shows the loading circle, but once loading is done. Nothing is displayed in listview. But if I take out progress bar code (thread and run method), and simply call setSelected() method, the listview successfully declares the data. so far it concludes that the progress bar code is doing some thing...so wanted to know am I missing something to add in or take out from the code. I need to the show progress bar as I am reading data from online source and it takes time , which may make user uncomfortable.

Android :: Find GPS Location Once / Show Loading Dialog

Aug 15, 2010

I am writing an app that requires the user's current location (lastknownlocation won't be very helpful) and displays a list of all the closest "items" to them taken from the database.I have got the finding of the closest items working well but only using a hardcoded latitude and longitude location for the time being but now it is time to implement finding the actual location.Can anyone provide an example of how to have the app find the current fine location in the background and have the app wait. I only need the location once not updates as the person moves. I have implemented a location listener however I understand getting a GPS fix can be slow. I have seen other examples using last known location or implementing the location listener which continues to run and update however as my Activity needs the location coordinates before it can display anything the app just crashes. I need to show a Progress Dialog while its searching.

How can I have the locationlistener run once in the background and then remove location updates once it finds the location. I need the rest of the application to wait until it has a GPS location or timeout after say 20-30seconds. I would like a ProgressDialog up so the user knows that something is going on, but it just has to be the spinning loading animation not a percentage or anything. If possible I would like the user to be able to cancel the dialog if they are sick of waiting which then they can search by typing suburb etc instead.I have been trying to do it with threads but it is getting way more complicated than I feel it should be and still not working anyway. On iPhone this is much more simple?Can anyone provide a nice way of doing this, I have been ripping my hair out for a week on this and it is really putting me behind schedule for the rest of the app completion date.
